The rocks of the Marin Headlands are part of the [[Franciscan Complex]], consisting of [[basalt]], [[radiolarian chert]], and clastic sediments including greywacke, shale, and melange. These rocks were accreted to North America during Cretaceous subduction of the Farallon Plate. The Marin Headlands block was tectonically rotated and now lies at an angle to the similar rocks which underly most of San Francisco. |
