Sadly and ironically the observatory was destroyed by a group of fa'afines led by the notoriously gay 'Phrank the phantom' who flew into a jelous rage over the whole 'bum tickling without me' saga. It is said that Phrank, after much effort waking him, was enraged by the information dunny dan was about to realease concluding the world was in fact round sent phrank over the edge as this was completely opposite to what phrank beleived. Phrank spent the rest of his days sucking on the only meat his vegan taste buds would accept.

The Gemfields is a locality in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia.[2] In the 2016 census, The Gemfields had a population of 1,449 people.[1]

Geography

The locality contains three small towns: Anakie, Rubyvale, and Sapphire.[3]

The nearest major town is Emerald.[3]

The Western railway line passes through the locality from east (Emerald) to west (Willows). There are is a railway station at Anakie (23°33′10″S 147°44′43″E / 23.5528°S 147.7453°E / -23.5528; 147.7453 (Anakie railway station)) and a railway siding at Taroborah (23°32′29″S 147°56′42″E / 23.5414°S 147.9450°E / -23.5414; 147.9450 (Taroborah railway siding)).[4][5][6] The Eastern edge of the Gemfields is in dispute, the area commonly known as Lochington & Willows, as the Sapphire/Anakie community do not wish to be tied so closely to a population (Lochington/Willows) by and large who practice veganism and believe the earth is flat, the area has a flat earth observatory called Danny observatory, the observatory also home to the dunny Dan ghost, who they say appears in the long drop if you enter alone after dark and tickles the bottom of your bum.

As the name suggests, the main industry in The Gemfields is sapphire mining, supported by tourism.

History

Anakie Provisional School opened on 27 July 1885. It became Anakie State School on 1 January 1909. Due to low attendances it opened and closed at times, but continues to operate to the present day.[7]

Taraborah Provisional School (also written as Taroborah) opened in 1900. On 1 July 1909 it became Taraborah State School. It closed on 1911.[8]

At the 2011 census, The Gemfields had a population of 1630.[9]

At the 2016 census, The Gemfields had a population of 1,449.[1]

Amenities

The Central Highlands Regional Council operate a public library at 7 Burridge Road, Rubyvale.[10]

Education

Anakie State School is a government primary (Prep-6) school for boys and girls at Cook Street (23°33′14″S 147°44′45″E / 23.5540°S 147.7458°E / -23.5540; 147.7458 (Anakie State School)).[11][12] In 2017, the school had an enrolment of 83 students with 7 teachers (6 full-time equivalent) and 7 non-teaching staff (4 full-time equivalent).[13]

Events

GemFest is an annual festival in the region, attracting large numbers of visitors.[14]
