Donation
Hello, I'd like to ask about the donation section. I've noticed that there's two forms of payment witch both of them requires a certain time for all users register. I'm sure many of wikipedia's readers uses cryptocurrency and I want to take your answer regards the one that is feeless, fast and instant called Nano. If possible, I could donate wikipedia's funds with this tool.
Thank you.

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
• For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
• Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
• If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
• Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
• For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
• New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

When could my draft be accepted?

Dear,

My draft has been under review for a long time. Could you please help me check the review progress? Thank you in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ql87 (talkcontribs) 01:45, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Ql87: Unfortunately the Articles for Creation (AfC) review process is heavily backlogged; there are over 3,500 pending submissions that have been waiting up to 8 weeks for review. Reviews aren't a first-in-first out, and the actual time you have to wait can vary widely depending on volunteers and the drafts they choose to review, but you can expect 8-10 weeks at worst (hopefully sooner!). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:59, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ql87. If this is about Draft:Benjamin Lev then I note that your submission was declined on October 19th but that you have made some improvements since then. It would be useful to add references to independently published articles about the subject if you can find some whilst you are waiting for a further review. Reviewers might be put off by lots of self-published works given as references. Your references clearly show that the subject exists and has a career in academia, but Wikipedia requires rather stricter conditions; See WP:Notability (academics) for exact requirements, and put these essential references first to make life easier for reviewers. Putting the subject's own self-published website first is not a good idea. Dbfirs 02:19, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

uploading a photo

Dear Helpdesk,

I'm trying to upload a photo of Ataur Rahman Khan at this URL:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ataur_Rahman_Khan

The photo was taken with my own phone from an old picture in my own family archives. i.e. its all my own stuff. Why am I being told that the photo doesn't appear to be my own? Fix this please. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Khanze1 (talkcontribs) 04:56, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Khanze1: You need to fill out a form stating that you own the copyright and that you are licensing it so that it may be reused for any purpose (not just on Wikipedia). See WP:IOWN. RudolfRed (talk) 06:22, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Khanze1, how old is the "old picture"? Why do you believe that its publication is not restricted by copyright law? Maproom (talk) 08:31, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Khanze1: The photographer of the original picture (or his estate) owns the copyright. Your camera made a copy. That does not change the copyright. If you are the heir of the original photographer, you might own the copyright. Yes, this is silly, but we did not write these laws, we just try to follow them -Arch dude (talk) 16:58, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Restoring deleted article

This is regarding Juan Mera González. It was deleted due to WP:NFOOTBALL and WP:GNG. Here is the discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Juan Mera González. Now he is playing in I-League (here). So, WP:NFOOTBALL criteria is met. Is it possible to restore the article?  S A H 08:59, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In principle, yes. You can ask the deleting administrator, User:Vanamonde93, to send you the deleted text of the article or to undelete it and move it to draft space. You can then create and/or edit a draft to include information that indicates that the subject now meets notability criteria. And then you can submit it through the WP:AFC process. Weird bytecount in page history

At this history page, why is User:Geolodus's edit shown as 0 bytes and my edit immediately after it shown as 1,319 bytes when both of them have added text to the talk page? JIP | Talk 11:51, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I estimate your answer to Geolodus to be about 300 characters, much less than his entry. But the history shows about 1300 char at your edit, which suggests it covers both edits with one increment. Apparently increments are calculated from stored lengths, and the length was not properly updated after Geolodus' edit. I have no idea how that was possible though. --CiaPan (talk) 12:07, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization in Dutch surnames

Is there any Manual of Style guidance on how to handle surnames that begin with lower case? For example, Mike van der Hoorn is titled with a lowercase "van der Hoorn" but uses "Van der Hoorn" throughout the article. Would it make sense to use "van der Hoorn" midsentence, but "Van der Hoorn" when at the beginning? Or some other style? Gnome de plume (talk) 13:38, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gnome de plume, I don't know of any MoS guidance here (though that doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist). That said, our article on tussenvoegsels explains the Dutch custom decently well: written with lowercase when preceded by name (or initial), but capitalized otherwise. So "Van der Hoorn was born [...]" and "The 2012-13 campaign saw Van der Hoorn breakthrough" but "Mike van der Hoorn is a professional footballer". (Cases that tend to lead to confusion and mistakes most often--even in Dutch--are when surnames starting with a tussenvoegsel are preceded by a title but not a name or initial. Starts with a capital then as well, e.g. "Professor De Vries" not "Professor de Vries".)
That said, the above goes for Dutch Dutch only: Flemish (or "Belgian Dutch") follows different rules: surnames with tussenvoegsels are always written with capitals, even if preceded by name or initial, and frequently get the tussenvoegsel collated into the surname at least as far as alphabetized lists go, while in Dutch, tussenvoegsels are simply ignored when alphabetizing (so e.g. "Jan de Grote" would be listed after, not before, "Jan Evert") AddWittyNameHere 16:04, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for that information. It's very helpful. This sounds like a case where WP:LANGVAR applies - use the Dutch style for Dutch-related articles and Flemish style for Flemish articles; and defer to MOS:RETAIN for articles without a clear connection to either. Gnome de plume (talk) 18:03, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gnome de plume: Yup, Flemish/Dutch is pretty much a textbook case of LANGVAR, and not just where surnames are concerned. Fair few differences between the two in general. AddWittyNameHere 18:23, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Gnome de plume, AddWittyNameHere WP:LANGVAR doesn't seem to apply at all, as everything in the section deals with different versions of *English*. Any feeling on whether anything should be added to that section of the WP:MOS?Naraht (talk) 19:30, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Naraht Fair enough. It doesn't apply to the English Wikipedia's LANGVAR guideline because they're obviously not different national varieties of English. (It's a close equivalent for the few parts of Dutch/Flemish that are actually relevant to an English-language 'pedia, though) My phrasing above was badly chosen in light of that. As such, while it might be useful to add a note or two, the best place is probably not the LANGVAR section since that deals with English varieties. MOS:NAME seems a better spot. (That said, I'm not entirely sure whether it's worth noting something so specific in the manual of style, though I'm not against it either.) AddWittyNameHere 20:17, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

reference other wikipedia articles with specific, copied sections

Noob here to wikipedia editing.

In some articles they not only reference other wikipedia articles, but they copy whole other sections. I can't figure out what that's called or if there are specific guidelines for doing this correctly.

Example.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars

Each little section is from a large main article - as in prequel trilogy in this main page references and links to an entire article about the prequel trilogy and copies passages from it.

Is this a specific technique or is this custom per page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SouthCoastInbound (talkcontribs) 16:07, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's all just done by hand. Sometimes people copy sections from the other article, but most often the sections are written to fit well in the main article, the main article gives a broad overview. You can point to more specific articles either by just linking to them or by adding Star Wars sequel trilogy below the relevant headers. There is a short explanation of this in Template:Main. – Thjarkur (talk) 20:34, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Info and inadiquate references on Paramount Home Media Dstribution Page.

Hello, I'm an employee of Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment and would like to call to your attention that there is WRONG information and inadequate referencing on the Paramount Home Media Distribution page. I've copied the first 8 paragraphs here as the example. All of this information has ONE point of reference supporting it. And that site referenced DOES NOT support all of the 8 paragraphs about it. I would like to begin removing the false information that you've allowed on this page that is erroneously supported by one reference (that does not support the 8 paragraphs above it). What is the quickest way for me to correct this false information - that is NOT supported by a legitimate reference? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramount_Home_Media_Distribution

copied content

History[edit] In 1993, Paramount launched a deal with fast food restaurant McDonald's to release several of its movies at participating restaurants. Charlotte's Web, Ghost, Wayne's World and The Addams Family were the films that were available. The back catalog of DreamWorks Pictures has been released on video by PHMD. (except the 1998–2005 DreamWorks Animation library, and the North American distribution rights of Munich, The Cat in the Hat, A Beautiful Mind, Meet The Parents, Seabiscuit, and Meet The Fockers, all under the ownership of Universal Pictures, with Minority Report and Cast Away under 20th Century Fox) Films from Republic Pictures, Paramount's other subsidiary, are not distributed on video and DVD by PHMD (with some exceptions), but are distributed on video and DVD by Olive Films. Prior to 2012, these films were distributed by Lionsgate Home Entertainment, which was acquired from previous rights holder Artisan Entertainment (which merged with Lionsgate in 2003). This deal later expanded to include some of Paramount's own post-1949 films, typically lesser-known or lesser-performing titles. Also, as a result of this deal, Lionsgate has released in 2007 "triple features" of their own library of films on DVD using the package design originated by Paramount. With Republic's folding, Lionsgate's duty has been transferred to Olive. Films from Rysher Entertainment are also distributed by PHMD due to a previous distribution deal from 1999. PHMD have developed a trademark by giving their Special Edition/Director's Cut editions different names rather than the usual "Special Edition," or "Director's Edition". Paramount Home Entertainment gives them different names such as Grease: The Rockin' Rydell Edition, Beavis & Butthead Do America: The Edition That Doesn't Suck and Airplane!: The "Don't Call Me Shirley" Edition. Internationally, PHMD holds the DVD rights to several shows on HBO. PHMD also distributes in Germany the DVD releases of films distributed theatrically by Prokino Filmverleih, as well as films from Gaumont in France. As Paramount Home Video, the company once distributed several Miramax releases on video – the video rights to some of these films (such as Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth) are still owned by Paramount.[1]

Wikipedia's contribution solicitations

I contribute when asked (which seems to be more frequently than in the past), but I believe I get hit twice with all the solicitation guilt trips because I use multiple email addresses. Even though you thank me when I give, I don't think you track who is actually giving and stop repeatedly asking for more money. I know it's tough raising money on a volunteer basis, and most organizations tend to go after the few who do donate all the more, but it makes one want to stop altogether to avoid ever-increasing requests. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.163.51.31 (talk) 02:18, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP editor. Wikipedia is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation, which is the group asking you for money. Wikipedia operates almost entirely independently from the foundation, and Wikipedia editors have no power over how the fundraising campaign operates. Please contact the foundation directly about any concerns you have about fundraising. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:26, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I believe if you have an account, you can disable the notices. IPs cannot disable the notices and there is no system to identify which users of IP addresses give money and which don't, as multiple people could use a single IP address. Also, if you don't wish to give money at any point in time, then don't. It's your money. 331dot (talk) 03:04, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Anuraj Sandhu You edited your user page, which is not article space, but a place for to tell the Wikipedia community about yourself in the context of your Wikipedia editing or use. It isn't meant to be a place to draft articles. You have a sandbox for that purpose(User:Anuraj Sandhu/sandbox); you can also use Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft. However, even if you had used the sandbox, your draft still likely would have been deleted, as it was a promotional piece for the organization, cited to nothing other than routine announcements or press release-type articles, which do not establish that the organization meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable organization. If you work for this organization, you must disclose that per the conflict of interest and paid editing policies. You might want to read Your First Article and use the new user tutorial to learn more about Wikipedia before attempting to write a draft(which is the most challenging thing to do on Wikipedia). 331dot (talk) 10:52, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Spurious blank lines

How do I stop Wikipedia from adding spurious blank lines in front of everything I post? The only way I've found is to go to preview so that the blank lines become visible, and remove them manually. However, this is both time consuming and does not always work. How do I fix the issue? Reyk YO! 11:01, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I found an example in [1]. Are you saying your browser does not display blank lines in the edit window [2]? I see blank lines before Hiatus and Cool. What is your browser, and skin at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? Do you see the blank lines with safemode or if you log out? PrimeHunter (talk) 13:06, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I mostly use Firefox, but have run into the same problem with Edge and Chrome as well. Typically, I don't see the spurious blank lines when I'm initially editing. If I hit save without doing preview first they only get put in at that point. If I do hit preview they become visible in the edit window, and then I can remove them. However, even then they still get reintroduced maybe one time in ten when I hit save. It's very annoying. Safe mode seems to make no difference. My skin is MonoBook. Geminer If a subject is not covered in independent reliable sources with significant coverage, it does not merit an article on Wikipedia. First hand knowledge or other primary sources are not usually acceptable for establishing notability. If you have a conflict of interest with a subject that you are writing about, you should review the conflict of interest policy. 331dot (talk) 17:23, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the section "Middle Renaissance" empty? Is someone in the process of revising this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.233.29.114 (talk) 18:29, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In this edit, editor Jerome Kohl blanked the section with the edit summary "deleted unsupported claims, challenged since August 2016 and February 2019". So the contents of the section were unsourced, and people had gone in previously and marked them with uncited, so Jerome Kohl removed the content, as any editor has a right to do. Since Jerome Kohl made a subsequent edit to the article, it does not seem likely that he is working on the section. You are welcome to do so. If you look in the history (and at the diff I linked to) you can see what the content was: you are welcome to work on that, but you need to find published sources for whatever you put in. (I have pinged Jerome Kohl above, so if he comes on Wikipedia he will see this). --ColinFine (talk) 18:46, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Colin, for the ping. Indeed I am not working on that section, and I agree that 50.233.29.114 is welcome to bring back any of the deleted material for which reliable sources can be found. I was unable to do so, but perhaps I could have tried harder. I just got tired of seeing those aging tags.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 21:26, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Signature

Hello. I've spent so much time, but I can't seem to get my signature right. I'm not fluent in the markup code, so I've been testing it out a lot. Below is the source code I put. The "Melo" should have blue text and a black background, and the "fors" should have black text and a blue background. However, this isn't working out how I planned.

I also ran into something weird. Using the code in my userpage, you can see on my userpage (you'll see at the beginning of my userpage) that the signature actually looks exactly how it's supposed to, expect the signature link doesn't work.

Could someone help me out to make the signature colors look how it's supposed to?

<span style="font-weight:bold;padding:1px;background-color:#000000;color:#00ffae">Melo</span><span style="font-weight:bold;padding:1px;background-color:#00ffae;color:#000000">fors</span>

Melofors

Melofors 00:55, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Here you go: Melofors <b style="padding:1px;background:black;color:#0fb">Melo</b><b style="padding:1px;background:#0fb;color:black;>fors</b>. The blue color of the link took precedent so you need to add these spans inside the link. On your user page the links in your signature just turn bold instead of being links since they point to the same page they're on. – Thjarkur (talk) 01:05, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Þjarkur: Ah, that makes sense. I really appreciate your time, but unfortunately, when I insert your code in Preferences, I get an error message saying it's invalid. Here's a screenshot of what I see: https://imgur.com/a/JLldRvm Sorry for the bother. Melofors 03:05, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Melofors: There is a missing quotation mark. This works: <b style="padding:1px;background:black;color:#0fb">Melo</b><b style="padding:1px;background:#0fb;color:black;">fors</b>. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:20, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okay i will update my new content and not advertisement. I have to change my user name or not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anuraj Sandhu (talkcontribs) 05:53, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If it is the name of a company/org you should, see WP:ISU. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:14, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But otherwise the name is fine, Anuraj Sandhu. But before you recreate your user page, please read WP:User pages to understand what may go there. You may put almost anything there that is relevant to your activities as a Wikipedia editor: that is what it is for. You may include a small amount of more general information about yourself, but nothing that looks promotional.
Before you do any further work on Draft:Canam consultants Ltd. you need to read and comply with WP:COI and WP:PAID. You'll then need to read WP:NCORP: I've only looked at the first three references in that draft, but they are all to statements which come from you and your colleagues. Wikipedia is basically not interested in what the subject of an article says about itself: it is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject have chosen to publish about it. If all you are trying to do is to get information about your company on Wikipedia, then I suggest you stop, and find another site to promote it: you will have a very frustrating time trying to do it on Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 17:00, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The content for the Canam Wikipedia that was attempted to be uploaded has been kept as a draft and not approved. The reference links that are attached in the content are credible media links covering the news of the company. The Awards and Certificates and the Major Cities section from the content have been removed as well. Please suggest what I should do to create the Canam Wikipedia company page. There are companies such as IDP and Edwise International having the Wiki page live, and Canam Consultants is also having content akin to them. The nature of the work of Canam is the same as that of IDP and Edwise. I have read the publishing terms and conditions of Wikipedia and uploaded my content as per those. Therefore I request you to please approve my Canam Wikipedia page content and make the page live. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anuraj Sandhu (talkcontribs) 06:33, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wondering when artist Paul Robinson's entry will be up

Paul Robinson Nina Simone's drummer for her final 19 years and Van Morrison's drummer and who has worked with so many huge names and venues; Someone called Richard Seaglove apparently recently did the entire Wiki entry and said several months ago that it would be up. Paul is about to release a biography of his time with Nina Simone. We are wondering why his Wiki entry is not up yet. Really important for agents and publishers to see it up here before the book is released. Can you perhaps let me know why it's not yet up there? Is it still being verified? Blessings and many thanks for Wiki Rebecca <email address redacted> — Preceding unsigned comment added by PoeticPlenties (talkcontribs) 09:44, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is no Wikipedia editor with a username of Richard Seaglove. The only draft with a name of Paul Robinson is Draft:Paul Robinson (wrestler). You also need to be aware that Wikipedia is not here for promotion. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:13, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid, Rebecca, that it sounds awfully much as if you have been taken by a scam artist. Maybe not: maybe this was somebody in good faith; but neither David Biddulph nor I can find any hint of either Richard Seaglove or a draft about Robinson. (It's perfectly possible that Seaglove is an editor using a pseudonym, in which case we have no hope of finding him). Nobody can guarantee that a particular article will be accepted, and certainly not that it will be accepted by any particular time. Since Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, which may not be used for promotion of any kind, there is no deadline. Bluntly, Wikipedia is not interested in whether agents and publishers see it here or not. --ColinFine (talk) 17:17, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I want to Post My COMPANY's Info

Hello Quickfitautos! Short version: don't try. Longer version: WP:COI. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:38, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Quickfitautos Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a place for companies to tell the world about themselves. Wikipedia is only interested in what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about companies that can show how that company meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable company. Wikipedia is not interested in what a company wants to say about itself. Because of this, not every company merits an article here, even within the same field. Wikipedia has no interest in enhancing search results for your company or aiding your potential customers.
You also would have what we call a conflict of interest and are a paid editor. You must comply with those policies(the latter is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory). For that reason, you should avoid directly editing about your company. If you have reviewed the definition of a notable company and truly feel that your company meets the definition, you should allow independent editors to take note of your company and write about it on their own. Also keep in mind that a Wikipedia article is not necessarily desirable. There are good reasons to not want one. You cannot lock it to the text you might prefer or prevent others from editing it. Any information about your company, good or bad, could go in such an article as long as it appears in an independent source. 331dot (talk) 10:45, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I created a draft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:LEEDS_JEWISH_WELFARE_BOARD) and I am not sure what the next step is? How do I get this page live? Thank you for your help!

Nobenfo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nobenfo (talkcontribs) 11:01, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nobenfo You can use Articles for Creation to submit your draft for review- but as it is now it has almost no chance of being accepted, as it is essentially an advertisement for the organization. Submitting it for review now would just, frankly, waste your time and that of the reviewer. If you work for this organization, you need to review conflict of interest and paid editing. You should also review Your First Article and perhaps use the new user tutorial to learn more about Wikipedia and the process of creating an article.
Please understand that Wikipedia articles must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about the subject, and not what the subject wants to say about itself. The organization must be shown to meet the special definition of a notable organization that Wikipedia has. 331dot (talk) 11:08, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nobenfo (agreeing with the other responses) you may want to look at other similar organizations. See the entries in the Charities row of Template:British_Jewry.Naraht (talk) 19:21, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Moonythedwarf, There are detailed instructions at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion#How to nominate multiple related pages for deletion.
Do note, However, the caution there: An article with a fair or better chance of standing on its own merits should not be bundled— nominate it separately. For the avoidance of doubt, bundling should not be used to form consensus around policy decisions such as "should Wikipedia include this type of article". Bundling AfDs should be used only for clear-cut deletion discussions based on existing policy. If you're unsure, don't bundle it. It might well be that some festivals have sources that would tend to demonstrate notability, and others do not.
If you do a bundled nomination, I would advise a careful WP:BEFORE search on every separate article, and throguh notiofication of the creators and major contributors, lest there be eventual pushack at WP:DRV, and more importantly so that we do not miss sources, including sources that might be in languages other than English. If you added an email address to your account under your Preferences, you should be able to use it to recover your password. Make sure that your email address is typed correctly(the caps lock is off, for one) and that it is the right email address. If that does not work, there is nothing else that can be done as that is the only way to recover your password. In that circumstance, you would need to create a new account and identify it as a successor to your original account.
I'll add that you should still be able to look at your draft page whether or not you are logged in. 331dot (talk) 16:02, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Post / user placing information for "donations" through crowdfunding - TSLAQ

Someone posted information about Crowdfunding a cause for TSLAQ. IE they are asking for money for their group. Isn't this against Wikipedia's mission?

TSLAQ post seems to have been created by an anonymous person and they added the following:

Crowdfunding Using GoFundMe, TSLAQ members led by former Seeking Alpha writer and Tesla short seller Lawrence Fossi ran a campaign for and contributed to the defense fund of fellow member, Randeep Hothi, who was initially sued by Tesla, accruing in excess of one-hundred thousand USD. Mr. Hothi allegedly chased a car full of Tesla employees and attempted to cause an accident by driving erratically to confuse the car's Autopilot system, among other things. The request for a temporary restraining order against Hothi was eventually dropped by Tesla.[7]

They are basically telling people where to go to contribute to their cause on wikipedia. Then they had their post put under "protection."

Hi all, I wonder if someone could please advise me (or point the way to where to ask) on the copyright status of Early Science in Oxford Vol III (1st pub. 1925, facsimile reprinted 1968) by Robert Gunther, who died in 1940. As the bibliographical details on Archive.org mention, there doesn't seem to be a copyright notice - but that's probably not the whole story. Cheers, MinorProphet (talk) 20:25, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MinorProphet, I imagine it is still in copyright. If it had been published in the US, it would enter the public domain in 2021 (96 years after first printing). But it appears to have been published in the UK, where things are done a bit differently. Why in particular do you need it to not be copyrighted? Captain Eek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:49, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
MinorProphet, Hmmm looking into UK copyright law it might no longer be copyrighted, as it is extended 70 years after the author's death, which would have been 2010. Captain Eek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:53, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MinorProphet: Keep in mind, however, that if you are wanting to use the book or book contents in a way that would normally require permission from the copyright holder, it's up to you to contact the appropriate intellectual property legal counsel to make sure you aren't assuming too much regarding the possibility of it being outside of copyright. Thank you for your swift and helpful replies. I'm writing a draft article on the Lee Building, Christ Church, Oxford. I'm hoping to use some relatively lengthy paragraphs from the book, mostly in the Dr. Lee's Anatomy School and Lecture section. These currently have quotation marks with proper refs. Gunther has a very concise style which packs a load of info into a short space, and making a précis would not be particularly easy. (WP:LAZY doesn't apply here...) Obviously since it's on archive.org I can just point readers to the relevant pages without wholesale quoting, but I feel it would be more complete to have everything in the article if possible. I know the people on the Media Copyright desk are very much on the ball as regards pictures etc., but I'm not sure about printed material: they may be able to give some advice. Hello, Freddy. I guess this relates to the article Freddy Stephen Fuller? (It is always helpful if people identify which of our six million articles they are talking about). And that you are Freddy Fuller?
I presume that this is because of the notice that the article needs additional citations. Unfortunately, unpublished information, even directly from the subject, cannot be used in a Wikipedia article: what that notice is calling for is citations to reliably published sources.
As for the photo, Wikipedia does not work like that: there isn't a staff of people waiting for material sent in by email. Wikipedia is entirely edited by volunteers, who work on what they choose. Suitable photos of the subjects of articles are always welcome, but copyright makes this a bit difficult. If you have a photo of yourself which you hold the copyright for you may donate it to Wikimedia - but unless it was taken under a contract that says otherwise, the copyright probably belongs to the photographer and not you, in which case you do not have the power to donate it. But if you do, or if you can persuade the person who does, you or they are welcome to upload it, not to Wikipedia, but to Wikimedia Commons (from which it will be available to all Wikimedia projects; in particular all the different-language Wikipedias). But to do this, the copyright holder will be required to license it in a way that allows anybody to reuse it for any purpose, commercial or otherwise, as long as they attribute it. You or they may or may not be willing to do this. See WP:DCM.
If somebody does upload and license a photo, then anybody may add it to the article about you. But generally, you should avoid editing that article yourself, as you have a conflict of interest. You are welcome to suggest improvements on the article's talk page Talk:Freddy Stephen Fuller, though. --ColinFine (talk) 22:46, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the notices can be annoyingly obtrusive. Unfortunately, Wikipedia's volunteer community has little control over them; they are instead designed by the staff at the Wikimedia Foundation. As 331dot mentioned above, you can turn them off by creating an account. – Teratix 06:42, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Sarahjanesmithies, I'm sorry for your loss. Have you tried the Upload Wizard?

How to deal with political article that seems to be biased

Hi. In one of the political article on wikipedia, the description seems too biased to one side. Some people before me edited the article to be less biased but a contributor who is most active reverts it whenever that happens. I also edited it but that same contributor also reverted the article.

I am new to Wikipedia and don't know the procedure. Is there a way to discuss if some opinionated arguments should be on the wiki?

Why is the Wikipedia page "Israel" protected? Site contains inaccuracy re: "liberal democracy" & zero photos of home demolitions

I noticed the Wikipedia "Israel" page is protected, yet contains inaccurate information and glaring omissions.

I would like permission to edit the "Israel" Wikipedia page and to post photographs, as well, of Israeli home demolitions in East Jerusalem.

The Israel Wikipedia page says "The country has a liberal democracy (one of only two in the Middle East and North Africa region, the other being Tunisia),[56][57] with a parliamentary system, proportional representation, and universal suffrage.[58][59]" The links for substantiation are to FreedomHouse.org, a US government funded organization that hardly constitutes a legitimate journalistic source.

"In its 2017 and 2018 financial statements, Freedom House once again disclosed that it "was substantially funded by grants from the U.S. Government." (Wikipedia/Freedom House)

Over four million Palestinians, including those in East Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza, live under Israeli occupation and rule but are now allowed to vote in Israel's elections. One essential criteria for a democracy is the right to vote, but occupied Palestinians do not have the right to vote in how they are governed with Israeli checkpoints, blockades, home demolitions and indefinite detentions.

(August, 2019, The Nation: "The Meaning of Israel's Massive House Demolitions" https://www.thenation.com/article/israel-occupation-palestine-housing-east-jerusalem/

Who Gets to Vote in Israel’s Version of Democracy? https://www.972mag.com/gets-vote-israels-democracy-2019/

"Israel, not a Democracy" (Counterpunch, 2018) https://www.counterpunch.org/2018/09/18/is-israel-a-democracy/

"Unlike most liberal democracies, Israel classifies its citizens as holding differing ‘nationalities’. It distinguishes between citizenship rights and national rights; the latter are reserved almost exclusively for its Jewish citizens. National rights are deemed to be superior to citizenship rights so if there is a conflict between a ‘Jews national right and a Palestinians individual citizenship rights, the national right is given priority by officials and the courts’

Additionally, Israel is not democratic because it bestows privileged rights to Jews, promising citizenship to any Jew in the world who emigrates to Israel while denying that right to exiled Palestinians who fled in 1947-48.

"Israel, not a Democracy" (Counterpunch, 2018) https://www.counterpunch.org/2018/09/18/is-israel-a-democracy/

"Israeli Palestinians, by contrast, are subject to a ban on family unification and are prohibited from living in Israel should they marry a fellow Palestinian from Gaza or the West Bank under the Citizenship and Entry Law."

Another essential attribute of a democracy is dissent, which is becoming increasingly difficult if not impossible when the subject is the occupation or the global boycott campaign against Israel.

"Israeli authorities have continued to narrow the space for criticism of its policies toward Palestinians. In March, the Knesset passed a law barring entry to foreigners who call for boycotting Israel or settlements."

(Oct. 17, 2018) Times of Israel: "Welcome to Israel! Please Leave Your Dissent at the Door" https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/welcome-to-israel-please-leave-your-dissent-at-the-door/

(2019/NY Times) "Israel to Expel Human Rights Worker" https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/05/world/middleeast/israel-human-rights-watch-bds.html

In the Israeli Knesset, Arab Israelis (Palestinians) can be expelled by a vote of the Knesset, even though the Arab Israeli representatives were popularly elected.

(Sept., 2019: Amnesty International Report: "Israel Discriminatory measures undermine Palestinian representation in Knesset" https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2019/09/israel-discriminatory-measures-undermine-palestinian-representation-in-knesset/

"For example, a 2016 legislative amendment which allows members of the Knesset to expel elected MKs by a majority vote means that MKs who express peaceful political views or opinions that are deemed unacceptable by a majority of MKs can face expulsion from parliament."

For the above reasons, I ask that you allow me to edit the Wikipedia "Israel" page to at the very least posit an opposing argument that Israel is not a democracy.

Articles related to the Arab-Israel conflict, probably the most controversial topic on Wikipedia, are indefinitely under extended-confirmed protection (editors must have been registered for 30 days and 500 edits) as they invariably attract vandals, trolls and biased editors. (In fact, Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee is currently working through its fourth case in this area). However, even before you gain the necessary editing experience, you are free to propose and discuss your changes on the article's talk page. I can see from your user page you are quite passionate on this subject, so please bear in mind the need for neutrality and reliable sources to support your changes. – Teratix 06:17, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Marcywinograd. This article is protected because of a very long history of vandalism and disruption from zealots on all sides of the controversy. Editors who are here to push an anti-Israel point of view are as unwelcome here as editors who are here to push a pro-Israel point of view. This is a website that is built on the neutral point of view. So, every article about the Israel-Palestine conflict must present neutrally written content accurately summarizing all sides of the conflict. This is an extremely difficult task that can be carried out only by experienced editors committed to Wikipedia's established policies and guidelines. If you come here to bash Israel, then you will have as difficult a time here as the editors who come here to glorify Israel. There are a million soapbox advocacy websites available to you on the internet. Wikipedia is not one of them. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 08:21, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Donations

Hi, here is a suggestion. If you are asking for donations please include google or Apple Pay option as it will be a lot easier to donate — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C4:4587:D700:8495:9A06:2C13:C038 (talk) 08:16, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP editor. Wikipedia editors (and Teahouse hosts) have absolutely nothing to do with the fundraising campaign. Contact the Wikimedia Foundation with your concerns. They run the fundraising effort. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 08:25, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you.
