Jamia Millia Islamia (Template:Lang-en) is a public central university, located in Jamia Nagar New Delhi, India. It was originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces present day Uttar Pradesh, India, during British rule in 1920. It became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. In Urdu language, Jamia means University, and Millia means National.[1]

History

Jamia Millia Islamia was created in 1920 at Aligarh, by founding members Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmud Hasan, Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Janab Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Janab Abdul Majeed Khwaja, and Dr. Zakir Hussain.

In 1925 Jamia shifted from Aligarh to Karol Bagh, New Delhi.[2] On 1 March 1935, the foundation stone for a school building was laid at Okhla, then a non-descript village in the southern outskirts of Delhi. In 1936, all institutions of Jamia, except Jamia Press, the Maktaba and the library, were shifted to the new campus.[2]

It was conceived as a national institution that would offer progressive education and Indian nationalism to students from all communities, particularly Muslims. The emergence of Jamia was supported by Gandhiji and Tagore who felt that Jamia could shape lives of hundreds and thousands of students on the basis of a shared culture and worldview. [citation needed] In December 1988 Jamia was accorded the status of a Central University by the parliament under the Jamia Millia Islamia Act 1988 (no. 59 of 1988).[3]

In 2006 the King of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia paid a visit to the university and donated $2.90 million for construction of a library. Now, that library is known as Dr. Zakir Husain Library (Central Library).[citation needed]

In 2019, the university emerged as a center of the Citizenship Amendment Act protests. On 15 December 2019, police entered the campus, used tear - gas shells inside and beat up the students upon burning of buses by unidentified miscreants a few kilometres away.The police also detained the student protestors.[4] The police action was criticized[5] and it sparked protests in several other universities[6][7] in solidarity with the Jamia students.

Founders

Zakir Hussain, once said, "the movement of Jamia Millia Islamia is a struggle for education and cultural renaissance. It will prepare a blueprint for Indian Muslims which may focus on Islam but simultaneously evolve a national culture for common Indian. It will lay the foundation of the thinking that true religious education will promote patriotism and national integration among Indian Muslims, who will be proud to take part in the future progress of India, which will play its part in the comity of nations for peace and development. The objective of establishment of Jamia Millia Islamia will be to lay down the common curriculum for Indian Muslims taking into account the future challenges and will prepare the children to be masters of future".[8]

Campus

The campus is distributed over a large area. Many of its buildings are being modernized. Greenery is supported and advocated.

The university's scenic cricket ground Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Sports Complex has hosted many important Tournaments and Indian women cricket match.[16] This ground also hosted University Cricket Championship in 2013[17] Besides its seven faculties, the Jamia has centres of learning and research, like the Anwar Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Fine Arts, Centre for Theoretical Physics and the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Academy of Third World Studies (ATWS). The Jamia offers undergraduate and postgraduate information and technology courses.Jamia Millia Islamia joined the green campaign installed 2,250 kilowatt solar panels on the campus.[18]

Jamia Millia Islamia has nine faculties under which it offers academic and extension programs:

Faculty of Law

This College was established in 1989 and since then has been instilling quality training and education to the students. Until the early 2000s, the Faculty of Law used to offer only 3 Years LL.B course, however, from the academic year 2002-2003, it started offering the integrated 5 Years B.A., LL. B (Hons.) course for the UG students. The Faculty of Law also offers specialised courses for the postgraduate students and PhD programmes. The Faculty of Law has been consistently ranked as one of the best institutes for Law in India, in the year 2017 was ranked 1st. by India Today.[19] Recently in 2018 it was ranked 6th in the NIRF by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.[20]

Faculty of Engineering and Technology

This College was established in 1985 with the departments of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering departments. It has added the departments of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Applied Science and Humanities (1996) and has six engineering departments: Applied Sciences & Humanities, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communications, Mechanical Engineering, computer Engineering—and a University Polytechnic. These departments conduct many projects sponsored by agencies. The faculty offers regular courses and continuing programmes.Recently in 2019 FET was ranked 27 in NIRF by Ministry of Human Resources and Development.

This Faculty has nine departments offering programmes in PhD, M Phil (pre-PhD), postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma and certificate courses.[21]

  • Islamic Studies has been a part of Jamia's curriculum since its inception in 1920 at Aligarh. Prominent scholars of Islam have taught Islamic Studies in Jamia as an optional as well as a compulsory subject, to name a few: Maulana Mohd Ali Johar, Maulana Aslam Jairajpuri, Maulana Mohd Abdus Salam Kidwai Nadvi, Maulana Qazi Zainul Abideen Sajjad Meeruti, Mohd Mujeeb, S. Abid Husain, Ziaul Hasan Faruqi, Mushirul Haq, Majid Ali Khan and I.H. Azad Faruqi. In 1975, a separate multi-disciplinary Department of Islamic and Arab-Iranian Studies was instituted. Following a trifurcation, a full-fledged Department of Islamic Studies was established in 1988. The department publishes an annual magazine, Sada e Jauhar.[22]

The campus has an art gallery named after the Indian painter M. F. Hussain.

AJK Mass Communication Research Center

The Mass Communication Research Centre was established in 1982 by Anwar Jamal Kidwai, then vice-chancellor (later chancellor) of Jamia Millia Islamia. Jamia is today known primarily for these mass communication courses[23] according to their own site.[24]

Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CNN)

The mission of this centre is to promote forefront basic and applied research in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology, with potential applications towards fulfilling national strategic needs. The main research focus of the centre includes nano-fabrication and nano-device, nano-materials and nano-structures, nano-biotechnology and nano-medicine, nano-structure characterization and measurements.

The Centre for Management Studies presently offers three programmes: Ph.D. in Management, MBA (full-time) Programme and M.B.A. (International Business) Programme.

Centre for Spanish and Latin American Studies

The Centre for European and Latin American Studeis(CELAS) offers Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in five languages viz. French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Russian. All the Language courses offered at CELAS are part-time courses. Apart from the above-mentioned courses CELAS also offers M.Phil/Ph.D in European Studies/ Latin American Studies. Time to time professors from different countries come and teach the above-mentioned languages.

Library

Dr Zakir Husain Library

The main central library of the University is known as Dr. Zakir Husain Library with its collection of about 400,000 artefacts — including books, microfilms, periodicals volumes, manuscripts, and rare books. Certain halls are dedicated to them. The library is open to all bona fide students of Jamia. Beside this, there are subject collection in libraries of some faculties and centres. University Library are open from 09:00 a.m to 05:00 p.m (Mon-Fri) for book issue.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been ranked at 3rd position among the top 25 Central Universities and at 17th rank among top 100 universities by Outlook-I Care India University Rankings 2019, published in the latest issue of the weekly magazine.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is among the very few academic institutions from India which has improved its position in Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE) 2020 . With a significant increase, the university is now among the top 601-800 universities of the world improving its position from 801-1000 last year. After the first 200 ranks, THE rankings put institutes into rank groups rather than individual ranks and 188th in Asia, improving its position from 201-250 last year.[29] The London-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 has assessed about 1,400 universities spread over 92 countries.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has retained its rank in the coveted Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking 2020 at 751-800 with its research intensity been described as "very high”. At 334 globally, the Faculty Student ratio is the strongest indicator for JMI, the report said.JMI has been put at 13th position among the 23 Indian institutions featured in the QS Ranking 2020. Among the Indian universities featured in the ranking JMI has been placed at 4th position.The QS World University Rankings of 2019 ranked it 177th in Asia[30] and 2019 ranked it 751-800 in the world.[31]

Jamia Millia Islamia has been ranked at 631 position worldwide by Moscow-based Round University Ranking (RUR) 2019 among the world's 1100 universities assessed, improving position from 747 last year.[32]

It was ranked 19 in India overall by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2019,[33] 12 among universities,[34] 6 in law ranking, 8 in architecture ranking, 27 in the engineering ranking[35] and 34 in the management ranking.[36]

The Faculty of Law was ranked sixth in India by Outlook India's "Top 25 Law Colleges in 2017"[37] and 20th in India by The Week's "Top Law Colleges 2017".[38]
