Aviva Canada Inc. is a Canadian property and casualty insurance company and a wholly owned subsidiary of the UK-based Aviva plc.[2] It provides home, personal, automobile, recreational vehicle, group and business insurance to more than three million customers.[3] The group has around 4,000 employees, 30 locations and 1,700 independent broker partners.
History
Aviva Canada came to fruition as a result of multiple acquisitions and rebranding, including the rebranding of Pilot Insurance Company and Scottish & York Insurance Co. Ltd. In 2008, the company announced that these companies will now operate as Aviva Pilot and Aviva Scottish & York.[4] Other companies in the Aviva Canada group of companies include: Elite Insurance Company (also known as Aviva Elite), Traders General Insurance Company (also known as Aviva Traders) and S&Y Insurance Company.[5] The company also has financial ownership of insurance intermediaries including Ontario Insurance Service Limited (OIS), Insurance Agent Service Inc. and Wayfarer Insurance Brokers Limited.[6] In April 2009, Aviva Canada announced its agreement to acquire the business of National Home Warranty Group of Companies.[7]
On 26 February 2014, the company announced that it would be relocating its headquarters to a new 12-storey office building located in Downtown Markham.[8] The building was completed in June 2017.
In June 2013, Aviva Canada was faced with one of the costliest natural disasters in Canadian history: "days of torrential rain inundated the city of Calgary, Alberta, and surrounding areas. The Bow and Elbow Rivers overflowed their banks, causing the evacuation of 26 neighborhoods and 100,000 people. Four died, and a state of emergency was declared in 32 communities."[9] Insurable damages amounted to more than $1.7 billion.
On January 21, 2016, the company announced the acquisition of RBC General Insurance Company, for CAD$582 million.[10]
Nonstandard insurance products
Hole-in-one insurance
In March 2007, Aviva Canada began to offer "hole-in-one insurance" to organizations that sponsor golf tournaments across Canada.[11] The Hole-in-One insurance product allows tournament organizers to offer a cash (or equivalent) prize to anyone who makes a hole-in-one on one of the par 3 holes. The product is coupled with an online quoting tool that can provide a quote in less than 15 seconds for insurance limits from C$5,000 to C$50,000.[12]
Hybrid vehicle discount (Quebec only)
Effective June 1, 2006 Aviva policyholders in Quebec who drive hybrid vehicles received a 10% discount. [13]
Corporate Responsibility
Take Back Our Roads
Take Back Our Roads is a social impact platform launched by Aviva Canada in June 2019. This replaces its previous corporate responsibility program - the Aviva Community Fund, which operated for over a decade.[14] Over 150,000 individuals are injured or killed on Canadian roads every year and Take Back Our Roads will focus on investing in and implementing real environmental changes to dangerous Canadian roads and school zones through community projects and innovations.[15] The platform will utilize anonymized claims data collected from thousands of collisions, insights from strategic partners and resources from local government services to target specific intersections and school zones that pose the greatest danger across various Canadian cities and towns. The information gathered will also be shared with partners to invest in changes that will make a lasting impact for all road users.[16]
Safe x Connected Cities Accelerator
In July 2019, Aviva Canada partnered with Highline Beta, a co-creation venture company, to make Canada’s roads safer for all.[17] Together, they announced the Safe x Connected Cities Accelerator, a challenge-based program aimed to create new opportunities to address road safety, mobility and smart city challenges, and implementing design solutions to urban environments that can be replicated around the world.[18] This collaboration is one of Aviva Canada’s many initiatives under the Take Back Our Roads social impact platform in attempt to tackle the pressing issue of road safety.
1st Accelerator Challenge Area: Safer Roads
In January, 2020, Aviva Canada and Highline Beta announced the selection of four startups to receive formal mentorship and pilot opportunities and to participate in the inaugural cohort of the Safe x Connected Cities Accelerator program.[19]
The startups selected were:
- Life Apps LLC: Fleet safety mobile software that measures and reduces distracted driving for commercial fleet operators.
- MicroTraffic: Uses artificial intelligence to review intersection camera footage for collisions and near miss collisions, helping traffic engineers become proactive with safety.
- PreAct Technology: Integrates directly with cars to determine whether a collision is imminent in the microseconds before it happens, meaning a sequence of safety features both inside and outside can be deployed to reduce the chance of serious injury.
- Tome: Specialty technology that detects cyclists and scooters entering an intersection and communicates key information to drivers via signs to reduce conflict or potential collisions between cyclists and vehicles.
Aviva Canada and Highline Beta will work closely with the selected startups to provide mentorship, develop proof concepts and pilot their solutions as part of the Take Back Our Roads strategy.
