Kanakagiri (also known as Suvarnagiri) is the hometown of the Kanakachalapathi Temple, a historical site in India. Kanakagiri is situated in Karnataka State of the Koppal district, 20 km northwest of the town of Gangavati.[1]
Kanakachalapathi Temple
The large Kanakachalapathi temple was built by the Naiks of Kanakgiri.[2] Its spacious halls and towering pillars are a unique example of south Indian architecture of the Vijayanagara times. The gopuras and walls are adorned with sculptures, among which are statues of Rajas and Ranis in black polished stone, plaster models, and wooden statues of mythological figures.
There is a royal bath constructed by Venkatappa Naik on the outskirts of Kanakgiri.
Fort
Hemagudda Fort, about 20 km from Kanakagiri[3] is next to the Kammatadurga Fort of Gandugali Kumara Rama. The fort was constructed in the 14th century. Celebrating Dasara in the fort has a temple of Durga Devi.
Utsav
Kanakagiri Utsav is an annual fair associated with Kanakachalapathi Temple in the month of Phalguna.
