The 2020 National Invitational Tournament was to be a single-elimination tournament of 32 NCAA Division I men's college basketball teams that have not been selected to participate in the 2020 NCAA Tournament. The Tournament was to begin on March 17 and end on April 2. The first three rounds was to be played at Campus sites while the semi-final and championship final will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
As it is organized by the NCAA, the event will also be subject to measures banning spectators from all NCAA championship events due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. But on 12 March, the NCAA, as with all tournaments, decided to call it off.[1]

Automatic Qualifiers
The following teams was to be guaranteed berths into the 2020 NIT Field by having the best regular season record in their conference but failing to win their conference tournament. Some of these teams may instead receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Although Merrimack won the Northeast Conference regular season title, they are ineligible to play in the NCAA Tournament or NIT due to transitioning to Division I. As a result, no team from the NEC will be eligible for an auto-bid regardless of the result of the conference tournament.[2]

The field of 32 teams will be announced on Sunday, March 15 at 8:30 PM EDT on ESPNU.[3]
Media
ESPN, Inc. was to have exclusive television rights to all of the NIT Games. It will telecast every game across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN3.[4] Westwood One was to have exclusive radio rights to the semifinals and the championship.
