Akçakale (Template:Lang-ar; Tal Abyaḍ) is an ethnic Arab town and a district of Şanlıurfa Province, in southeastern Turkey.

Akçakale forms a divided city with Tell Abyad in Syria, maintaining a border crossing. The Mayor is Mehmet Yalçınkaya (AKP).[2] The current District Governor is Hamza Özer.[3]

Syrian Civil War

On October 3, 2012, Akçakale was hit by shells from across the Syrian border in Tell Abyad, killing five civilians.[4][5] In October 2014, reporters for the Sunday Herald newspaper in Scotland, Sheren Khalel and Matthew Vickery, documented self-proclaimed Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant presence in the town, due to the porous nature of the border between the Turkish border town and Tell Abyad, which has been under ISIS control[6] until June 15, 2015, when the city was retaken by Kurdish People's Protection Units.

Transportation

Akçakale is at the southern end of the highway TUR-D-885.

Sport

The Akçakale Belediyespor plays in the Akçakale Ilçe Stadium and competes currently in the Turkish amateur liga.[7]

Climate

Akçakale has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification: Csa).
