Revision as of 15:59, 28 March 2020

This version of Wikipedia is written in English (see Main Page#Wikipedia languages). With this being said, this page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}. Please keep in mind that drafts are considered out of scope for this page.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be removed from Wikipedia following one of the processes laid out in our deletion policy.

Standard procedures

If you are here for the first time and have an article in a language other than English or a poorly translated article that you wish to list here to forestall possible deletion, you should start by finding the most appropriate template from among the ones listed at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation and add it to the article page, save the page, and then follow the instructions in the banner on how to list the article here. You might need to click '[show]' to see all the instructions.

If you want to ask for a translation into English of an article from another language's Wikipedia, go to Wikipedia:Translation.

Listing a page here

Most pages get listed here by subst'ing a {{Needtrans}} template, following the instructions given at any one of several translation-related templates that are added to the article page. Many of the templates found at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation propose adding the corresponding article here. See section Translation template usage below for details of the templates available for use on the main article page.

Other ways to find articles for inclusion on this page are:

Tagging

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in another language's Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. You can leave a message on the contributing user's talk-page in their own language, using the templates from WP:PNT/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}; this will point them to the appropriate Wikipedia in the language they used.

Replacement and restoration

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by content in other languages. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

In addition, you may leave a message on the user's talk-page as indicated above.

Notification

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy, Ambassador, or Wikipedia:Local embassy member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart, and if that fails, some language identification web site, such as Xerox or What Language Is This? to find out. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Deletion

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be nominated for deletion. (See also Guide to deletion.)

Articles that are not in English are still subject to all other forms of speedy deletion should they meet the criteria, and can be nominated for deletion by prod or afd should an editor feel they warrant deletion for a reason other than the language it is in, an article not being in English is not itself a criterion for deletion until the two week period has passed. Also, articles in other languages are still subject to blp prod.

After translation

When a page listed here has been translated, its entry should be removed (or moved to section Cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

There are also procedures to follow at the Talk page of the article itself; see template {{translated page}} and Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate.

Translation template usage

Various templates are available to tag the article page needing translator attention, and one template is available for use here at WP:PNT.

The following templates are available to tag articles with translation issues in preparation for listing the article at WP:PNT:

  • {{notenglish}} – "This page is written in a language other than English..."
  • {{cleanup-translation}} – "contains translated text and needs attention..."
  • {{hidden translation}} – "an earlier translated version may have introduced errors of fact..."
  • {{rough translation}} – "may have been generated by a computer or by a translator without dual proficiency"
  • {{translate passage}} – "A passage needs to be translated from Language into English"
  • {{not English inline}} – "[needs Eng. translation]" after a phrase

The following templates are available for use at WP:PNT to list an article here that has a translation issue:

These templates, and other templates relating to translation issues outside the scope of WP:PNT can be found at Wikipedia:Template messages/Translation.

Templates for article pages

One of the following templates should be used at the top of the article page:

Not English

Template {{not English}} (alias: {{notenglish}}) is available for a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

1. Use the notice {{notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question.
2. Add a mention to the list of pages needing translation, using {{Needtrans}} as detailed below.
3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest submitting it to a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (see available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}.
Bilingual versions of this template have been created for Norwegian, Spanish, Polish, and French. See the note on these at {{uw-notenglish}}.

Not English section

If there is just a section that needs translation:

1. Use the notice {{Not English|NameOfLanguage|section}}, with the word "section" as a second unnamed parameter at the beginning of the non-English content.
2. Add a mention on this page, as above.
3. You may wish to place a note on the talk pages of contributors of non-English material, saying that English Wikipedia is meant for English-language content, inviting them to translate it, and, if appropriate, suggesting the location of the Wikipedia edition for the language in question should they wish to post content in that language.

Cleanup translation

Template {{cleanup translation}} (alias: {{cleanup-translation}}) is available if the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:

1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}.
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section.

Hidden translation

Template {{Hidden translation}} is available if the article was translated at an earlier point and contained factual errors, while subsequent edits fixed up the English without fixing the errors of fact. The article now looks good and not "machine-translated" anymore, but the original errors of fact are still there, papered over with a facade of good English.

1. Use the notice {{Hidden translation}}, for example, {{Hidden translation|lang-name|version-nbr}}
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section, using the provided {{Needtrans}} invocation.

Rough translation

Template {{rough translation}} is available if the article has been translated, but it looks to be either a machine translation or by someone who doesn't have a good command of the target language, and needs attention from a translator; more than just copyediting is required.

1. Use the notice {{rough translation}}, for example, {{rough translation|German|Deutsch}}.
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section, using {{Needtrans}} as detailed below.

Translate passage

Template {{Translate passage}} is available for articles that are primarily in English, but have a brief section like a quotation, poem, excerpt, etc. in another language, that needs translation.

1. Use the notice {{translate passage}}, for example, {{subst:Translate passage|ArticleName|language=LanguageName}}
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section, using {{Needtrans}} as detailed below.

Templates for use here

Once you have tagged the article page with one of the templates above, the banner that appears will provide instructions on using a template to add an entry to the list of pages needing translation (titled "Pages for consideration") using the {{Needtrans}} template or the translation cleanup section (titled "Translated pages that could still use some cleanup") :

Translation request

Template {{Translation request}} (a.k.a., {{Needtrans}} ) is available for use in the list of pages needing translation.

Follow instructions at the expanded banner generated by {{Rough translation}} or {{Cleanup translation}} to place {{Translation request}} at the bottom of the cleanup section at WP:PNTCU. Sample invocations:

{{subst:Needtrans |pg=Wilhelm II, German Emperor |language=German}} ~~~~

For those pages written in a foreign language, please also consider also placing

{{subst:uw-notenglish |1=Template:not English}} ~~~~

on the talk page of the author.

Dual fluency request

Template {{Dual fluency request}} (a.k.a., {{Duflu}} ) is available for use in the translation cleanup section.

Follow instructions at the expanded banner generated by {{Rough translation}} or {{Cleanup translation}} to subst template {{Dual fluency request}} onto the page at the bottom of the cleanup section. Sample invocations:

{{subst:Dual fluency request|pg=Wilhelm II, German Emperor|language=German}} ~~~~

Translated pages that could still use some cleanup

Pages listed here are "mostly done" or need sources or works included in the article to be translated. They could still use some attention from someone who approaches dual-fluency. Please use the notice {{cleanup-translation}} on the page.

April 2017

The original French article is fr:Église Saint-Sulpice de Jumet. I retranslated section #The excavation of 1967, everything else needs a look. Also, can someone check me on départ d'enduit in that section, that was a tough one. Mathglot (talk) 23:01, 3 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know the english words but enduit seems to be a lime or plaster wall covering on the exterior side of a wall's insulation (stucco???) and a départ d'enduit is apparently a thingie to make sure the foot of the wall is straight. Something there about moisture drainage too. I will look at this further if it languishes. The French original is marked as a good article. Don't let that stop any of the rest of you though, my personal list is long and two of them need an enormous amount of work.Elinruby (talk) 07:11, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
did a quick pass for grammar and obvious problems like a french-wiki template consistent use of present tense and confusion about pronouns. Did not compare to original and this definitely needs to be done. I left 3-4 sentences alone that raised questions in my mind, but I got a lot of the low-hanging fruit (all I am up to at this moment), thus, I hope, making it somewhat more accessible to monolinguals. Based on previous translations of articles about old buildings, I am inclined to believe most of what this says, but again, it was fairly rough and I haven't checked for accuracy yet. doesn't really correspond to French. I made one significant change based on fr.wikipedia but did not rule out that the discrepancy was based in the sources, and it was fr.wiki that was wrong. See talk. Husband's name is not in fr.wiki, also, but is in fact well-documented. I think I added a reference. Not sure what you are looking for here - verification of content? Elinruby (talk) 04:46, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good point; when doing the translations we kind of automatically assume that the original language has some kind of direct line to Truth, but of course, that's not the case. Plus, I think it's evolved since it was created eight years ago, so diverged from the French. Good job finding refs including for the husband's name. Was looking for verification of facts of translation, but seems to be good, now. Mathglot (talk) 09:59, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The initial language of this article was German. Needs the attention of an maths expert. The article is based on https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axonometrie. I don't know how close it is to the original. I already cleaned up the first two sections. I'm not sure if the issues with the article are actually grammatical ones, or just awkward wordings chosen by the author.SharkD  Talk  11:42, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think belongs here, as you say it needs a maths expert rather than language--Jac16888 Talk 16:26, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, actually it needs both: a math expert that can understand German. Missing either skill risks getting something horribly wrong. Possibly a tandem team of two people, a math expert with a bit of German, and a German speaker somewhat familiar with advanced mathematics could do it. Mathglot (talk) 02:56, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's very technical and btw is more geometry and architectural drawing than pure mathematics. I can read it and it's not gibberish but I would need to research the facts to verify them. My German is definitely not up to this and the French version is even more technical fyi. It's an option for verification though. Elinruby (talk) 04:32, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There is some weird stuff, such as where it says, "The result is independent of the order of the steps." This can't be true, since step #4 definitely cannot be done before step #1. The original author is AWOL and has stopped answering questions. I don't want to slap {{clarify}} tags all over the article, as that might scare the author (and other people) away. I am going to take another look at this just because I am sick of the stuff I have been working on and need a break. I don't think I should try to edit it right now but as a baseline let's say it's 3-d solids so the math may be DiffEq. It may be easier than that though because a lot of it is here is so-and-so's theorem, which I assume can be looked up even if it's a little more complicated than a google. It made perfect sense when I started to read up but this is not light reading for the elevator. It probably also matters that I learned my math in two different languages and neither of them was German. The article possibly has somw relationship to the French version but when I scanned *that* text the proofs all contained trigonometry, so that it's not immediately obvious that you could verify the German->English by looking at the French unless maybe someone did a separate translation and compared. I will see if I can get anywhere with this and note if I do. Elinruby (talk) 11:27, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK I read the thing all the way through although to check any of it I would need pencil and paper, but... the thing with order of the steps? wasn't referring to steps 1 though four; it's talkng about the three steps under number 3, and no, the order doesn't matter. It's like taking three turns to go around a block, and you can take three lefts or three rights and get the same result. Make sense? The rest of it seems ok to me. Do you have any other questions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elinruby (talkcontribs) 14:51, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

was bored and did a drive-by edit. Cleaned up some erroneous tags. Its biggest problem is that it's a resume really, but hey why not. I'm willing to believe that he's an important enough medical specialist to at least meet the professor rule, and it looks as though he may have some government work as well. The article should be fleshed out to be less resume-like if so. It would also be good to translate the titles of the references, and if he really is all that, he will have been cited in the peer-reviewed journals. I don't have anywhere near enough Russian to even begin that part, although I did fix a couple of very obvious sentence problems. Now it really does need someone who can figure out if those really are the right names for the government agencies, etc; I am willing to bet that some of those redlinks have articles, but not in English. This all started out on this edit at Catalonian Civil War where Parviz overwrote the man's correct name in that article with an English translation of it. He then clicked the red link there to create the new article with the wrong name. His real name is Francesc de Verntallat as can be seen in both Catalan and Spanish Wikipedias. I've now renamed the article back to the correct name. Now that we have those two links, it appears to have been translated from the Spanish one, although not surprisingly the two are similar. thanks, that is actually helpful; it's not just that someone imported from Arabic and did not mark it as a translation, in which case I would try to fix it. Wow just wow. Deleted big chunks of gibberish from first two paragraphs. Came to a screeching halt at the assertion that they were left in Spain, but no, French does say they were abandoned there. Need to look this up as I can't tell, even from French, whether they were disbanded for a time after a military campaign there, or just stranded there, or what. Classic case or original article not being that good. However, I suppose the topic warrants the effort. Not feeling it right now tho Elinruby (talk) 12:51, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Gibberish, indeed. All, your feedback is needed at Talk:Origins of the French Foreign Legion#Rewrite from scratch. No French required. Thanks particularly to Elinruby for even attempting to tame this beast. (I can explain the "abandoned in Spain" thing later, if needed; but the whole mess needs to be s**t-canned first.) Mathglot (talk) 02:03, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I figured out the Spain thing. France literally *gave* the unit to Spain at one point during the Carlist Wars, which I had previous never heard of. Not sure how well that currently comes across. I worked on it a bit more after this comment but it's still pretty incomprehensible in many places. Elinruby (talk) 19:41, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I am fine with that. It certainly belongs with the rest of the MT about the Foreign Legion. I'll chip away at this from time to time but my interest in the topic, while not zero, has limits. I consider some of the other stuff I do a bit more urgent. It would be really nice to get someone familiar with military history to review a whole bunch of stuff. And yet the Foreign Legion is definitely notable... Elinruby (talk) 09:25, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh it's definitely MT. I caught "Renaissance" translated as "Rebirth" and "tour" (tower) as "turn" which is indeed an alternate meaning for the word, just not one that a human being would expect to find on a castle wall. So it's not just MT, it's stupid early MT and indeed bears no relationship to the French article. Possibly from the museum website? All that stuff about pre-Roman Gaul is probably notable enough to attempt a fixup, if possible. History section needs a LOT of help.Elinruby (talk) 12:33, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
did a major unFrenching and degibberishing. Is at least not embarrassing now. It was a word-by-word translation of the city government website, with extra gibberish thrown in for flavor. It looks like someone who knows the history but does not speak english added some stuff about the river trade, which I boggled at tracking down, but the rest of it is a decent translation of the source. Not sure what the copyright is on government web pages in France. Maybe none. It would in my opinion be best to finish the editing on this and then work on some additions and references so that it is based on (and credits) the municipal website but is not identical to it and has references to better sources. This is why I left the added material that does not quite make sense. That and I had really had enough, gah. Elinruby (talk) 11:00, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I flagged a mention of knickerhose in the 12th century. Probably should be hose, but I'll check. This needs a lot of format changes which is the sort of mindless task that I want to work on just now, so I will get the thing with the centuries, which is standard usage in French, as is the space before all those colons. There are some questionable assertions (French is an official language of Canada, not just New Brunswick for example) but ya, the translation itself needs help before we get to that. I will at least try to hit the format problems tonight. If someone else would like to work on this as well feel free. Elinruby (talk) 04:13, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The language of this article is Latin. Translation requested for the phrase "norma vivendi". Norma could be something normal or standard, vivendi means living apparently (Modus vivendi) but I'm not sure how that fits into the sentence Jac16888 Talk 22:07, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Norm of living" is what comes to mind first. That section is going way to deep for me, though, and my WP:SYNTHESIS alarm is ringing. --HyperGaruda (talk) 06:32, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"Norm of living" sounds awkward and unnatural, simply not how we would usually express in English the concept to which it refers. But it has the advantage of being the translation given by others online. I would have suggested "standards for living" or "rules for living"—or even "rules to live by", as "vivendi" is the gerundive, which signals "that which is to be/must be done". These are all more natural to my ear than "norm of living". Largoplazo (talk) 17:51, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Or we could just leave it as a fixed expression, as we might for "modus operandi" or "sine qua non" or "savoir faire". Largoplazo (talk) 17:55, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I found the ref scanned into Google Books. p.72, as given, tells you what it means at the top:
  • Trudeau-Clayton, Margaret (2007). Jonson, Shakespeare and Early Modern Virgil. Cambridge University Press. p. 72. Retrieved 23 December 2018. Produced with, but distinct from Virgil as formal model was Virgil as moral authority – a norma vivendi [emphasis in original]
So really we should augment the ref (currently ref 13) or add the quote to the article text or just cut the Latin entirely as tautological and demonstrably unhelpful Q.E.D.. 178.164.132.87 (talk) 04:03, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

mmmyeah. Will require extensive reference to the original and probably additional research as well. Probably a keeper though; someone is working on Lyon and I have worked on some extensive discussions of different neighborhoods, medieval walls, etc. However, the topic strikes me personally as particularly boring and recalls some drudgework I did on a similar article about the Thames only to be berated about whether something was or was not a bridge. Maybe we can recruit someone from a railway project or something? If nothing happens with this I may in idle moments chip away at a problem or two in this article, but there are a lot of them. For example, whoever or whatever did the translation left "viaduct" untranslated, and there is a first reference to SNCF in a section header. This is the French railway system, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer, but this is likely not readily apparent to English speakers, I am not sure what the Manual of Style says about a first reference in a section header, and this is the least of the problems. There are also repeated references to batteries in connection to bridge construction, which is not within my area of expertise. I suspect that the French word is batteries and the English word is not batteries. But I don't know what it would be. And this is in the first two small sections only. Elinruby (talk) 21:09, 28 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

PS another reason to keep is that someone appears to have taken a bunch of pictures -- maybe Wiki Loves Monuments. In any event, there's a bunch of pictures of that viaduct, and I added one. This is Algeria, which does need to be fleshed out though, and there does seem to be a claim to notability there, ie old Roman ruins, ancient trade route, historic rebellion. Not clear this is actually a translation as the French article, at least in the first sections, is somewhat different. It should help to clarify some of the more mysterious stuff though. Not up for side by side, line by line, translation right now but I'll do it eventually unless someone else wants the project. Elinruby (talk) 10:56, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to have been a machine translation. I've taken an initial editing pass over it, consulting the Italian Wikipedia source and some of the references to ensure accuracy—that said, I should mention I'm not fluent in Italian so I may have missed discrepancies. I also reorganised and copy-edited it as I went. Laogeodritt [ Talk | Contribs ] 23:29, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like User:Almecijamar may simply have been translating in-place and forgotten to remove the original text. Nonetheless, I've taken the opportunity to verify the translation and copy-edit the Administration section, as well as fix up formatting in that section overall.
However, the article's translation is quite rough (machine? or quickly done/nonnative speaker?) and could use an overall copy-edit and verification against . Laogeodritt [ Talk | Contribs ] 23:23, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

12th century priory. Article does need some unFrenching, but knowledge of French possibly not needed. Just stiff and and overly complex in its construction. Encouraging any English-speaking editors to take a shot at this. Elinruby (talk) 22:03, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I did a little de-Germanizing for syntax and vocabulary ("star engine" => radial engine, for example) but it needs more and I'm not fully competent to do it. mainly pretty technical. I'll do this if nobody else does. Main thing to realize is that zec is an acronym for an administrative disctrict. I think it should be capitalized since this is english, but apart from that this, some minor cleanup of Gallicisms, and a need for wikilinks and references, its not too bad for an article about an obscure topic Elinruby (talk) 20:25, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
