Normal People is an upcoming television series developed by Element Pictures for Hulu and BBC Three based on the eponymous novel by Sally Rooney starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal. It is set to be released as a boxset on BBC Three in the UK on 26 April 2020 and on Hulu in the USA on 29 April 2020[1], and on free-to-air television on RTE in Ireland on 28 April 2020[2].

Premise

The series follows Marianne and Connell through their secondary school and university years.

Production

In May 2019, it was announced BBC Three and Hulu ordered 12 episodes based on the novel that would premiere 2020 starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal as Marianne and Connell respectively.[3] Sarah Greene and Aislín McGuckin were also announced as part of the cast.[4] Sally Rooney herself would help with the adaptation alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O'Rowe. Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald are directing and Irish company Element Pictures are producing the series.[5][6]

Principal photography began on location in Sligo and Dublin in May 2019.[7] Real life students from Trinity College Dublin while filming at the university will feature in the series.[8][9] Filming also took place in Italy and Sweden.[6]

Release

The first look pictures came out on 1 November 2019. BBC Three and Hulu released their own teasers on 17 January 2020 followed by trailers on 31 March.[10] The 12 episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer, as a BBC Three boxset on 26 April and on Hulu on 29 April.[11] The series will be on Stan in Australia on 27 April and begin airing on RTÉ One in Ireland on 28 April.[12][13] The series will also air on BBC One, date to be announced.
