Founded in 1905, Loma Linda University (LLU) is a private, Christian, coeducational, health sciences university located in Southern California 60 miles east of Los Angeles close to San Bernardino and near beaches, mountains, and the desert. LLU is part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church's system of higher education. As such it provides an environment for learning that emphasizes individual commitment to Christ, personal integrity, intellectual development, and community service. Seven schools and the Faculty of Religion and Faculty of Graduate Studies comprise the University organization. More than 55 programs are offered by the schools of Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Science and Technology. Curricula offered range from certificates of completion and associate in science degrees to doctor of philosophy and professional doctoral degrees. Students from more than 80 countries around the world and virtually every state in the nation are represented in Loma Linda University's student body. LLU also offers distance education. The University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Loma Linda Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist K-12 school, is located nearby.
The university also hosts a branch office of the Ellen G. White Estate.
Mission statement
Loma Linda University, a Seventh-day Adventist Christian health sciences institution, seeks to further the healing and teaching ministry of Jesus Christ "to make man whole" by:
- Educating ethical and proficient Christian health professionals and scholars through instruction, example, and the pursuit of truth;
- Expanding knowledge through research in the biological, behavioral, physical, and environmental sciences and applying this knowledge to health and disease;
- Providing comprehensive, competent, and compassionate health care for the whole person through faculty, students, and alumni.
Criticisms of University policies
Loma Linda University has been accused by non-Adventists of religiously based discrimination. In 1992 a non-Adventist employee sued Loma Linda University (Bethsaida Arrigia, plaintiff versus Loma Linda University, defendant) for discrimination based on gender, marital status, and pregnancy, which led to her being fired, stating that this violated the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) section 12900. Arriaga, who at the time was unmarried, became pregnant with a child. The University terminated Arriaga her employment because of her engagement in extramarital sex. The court ruled that Loma Linda College is excluded under FEHA because it is a nonprofit religious corporation. [1]
