The Ba Tong Line of the Beijing Subway (Chinese: 北京地铁八通线; pinyin: běijīng dìtiě bātōng xiàn) is an east-west rapid transit line in eastern Beijing. It extends Line 1 further east from Template:BJS stations in Chaoyang District to Template:BJS stations in Tongzhou District.

The Ba Tong Line derives its name by combining the first character of Bawangfen (八王坟), another name for Sihui, and Tongzhou (通州), the eastern suburban district of Beijing which the line serves.

The Ba Tong Line is mainly above ground with only 3.8 km section is underground[4] and runs 23.4 km (14.5 mi)[3] from the Template:BJS stations in the west to Template:BJS stations in the east. The colour of Ba Tong Line that is shown on maps, like that of Line 1, is red.

Since, aside from Line 6, the Ba Tong Line is the only subway line serving Tongzhou and eastern Chaoyang Districts, it tends be very crowded during rush hour. To alleviate this headways were reduced and skip-stop services were introduced during rush hour.

Fare

Starting fare of RMB(¥) 3.00 that increases according to the distance fare scheme introduced in December 2014.

Regular subway users can use a Yikatong card, which offers even cheaper journeys, as well as mobile phone apps, which deploy payment via a QR code.

Hours of Operation

The first east-bound train departs Sihui at 6:00am. The first west-bound train departs Tuqiao at 5:20am. The last east-bound train leaves Sihui 10:45pm. The last west-bound train leaves Tuqiao at 10:05pm. For the official timetable, see [1].

Route

The Ba Tong Line follows the Beijing-Tongzhou Expressway eastward from Sihui to Guanzhuang. Between Gaobeidian and Guanzhuang, the Ba Tong Line and its stations are built into the highway's median. At Baliqiao, the Ba Tong Line turns to the southeast and follows the Jingtang Road to Tuqiao, which is located just inside the Tuqiao Bridge exit on the eastern 6th Ring Road.

History

Phase 1

Construction of the Ba Tong Line began on December 28, 2001 and the line opened on December 27, 2003.

In 2012, traffic on Ba Tong Line was relieved by the opening of the parallel Line 6, with a 12.14% decrease in daily ridership and a 10–20% reduction in flow during rush hour.[7] However, during peak hours sections the line still operates above 100% capacity.[7]

Southern extension (Phase 2)

There are 2 stations on the southern extension: Template:BJS stations station and Template:BJS stations station (both are transfer stations with the eastern extension of Line 7).[8] The extension is 4.5 km in length,[9] including 3.8 km underground section.[10] Template:BJS stations station was opened on December 28, 2019.[11] Template:BJS stations station will open simultaneously with the opening of Universal Beijing Resort[12] (in May 2021[13]).

Future Development

Through operations with Line 1

In 2010, a CPPCC member Chen Dingwang, proposed that services on Line 1 and the Ba Tong Line should directly link, with through operations, reducing travel times and removing the unnecessary forced transfers at Sihui East or Sihui.[15] However, the Beijing Subway responded that Line 1's and Ba Tong's signal systems are completely different, so through-operation will be more difficult to achieve, from an engineering standpoint. As of 2016, preliminary design and feasibility studies are underway to allow for through operations between Line 1 and Ba Tong.[16] Work has begin through operation with Line 1 in conjunction with signal upgrades to allow trains to run every two minutes just like Line 1. Completion of this project is scheduled for 2021.[17]
