Arjowiggins is a large, independent paper manufacturer based in Scotland with a long and rich history dating back to the 17th century. Today the group is one of the major producers of fine and technical papers in the world. The group’s portfolio of products include creative papers for graphic printing, packaging, bookbinging and covering material as well as more technical products including smart, translucent papers with barrier properties and security papers.
Arjowiggins formerly belonged to the holding group Sequana which regrouped 2 main subsidiary companies:
- Arjowiggins: world leading paper manufacturer which comprised specialised paper companies including Arjowiggins Security, Arjowiggins Graphic and Arjowiggins Creative Papers.
- Antalis: leading distributor of communication media
In 2019 the Sequana group as well as as the Arjowiggins Security and Arjowiggins Graphic divisions of the Arjowiggins subsidiary were all liquidated leaving Antalis and Arjowiggins Creative Papers (division of the former Arjowiggins subsidiary).
Since then, Antalis continued its operations while in October 2019 the 8-member management team of Arjowiggins Creative Papers took ownership of the company saving around 800 jobs in the UK, Europe and China and safeguarding the future of the iconic Arjowiggins brand.
The new company, Arjowiggins is based in Scotland and managed by an experienced leadership team under the direction of the current CEO Jonathan Mitchell.
Today, Arjowiggins Group Ltd comprises 5 Business Units including:
- Creative Papers & Luxury Packaging and Labels
- Bookbinding & Coverving papers
- Smart papers
- Security papers
- Translucent papers
The group continues to produce all the iconic and quality products that have built its reputation over the years. These include products such as Conqueror, Curious Collection, Keaykolour, Pop’Set, Rives, Jetguard, Laserguard, Gateway and more recently Powercoat for printed electronics. The papers are manufactured across the group’s 4 mills, in Europe (Stoneywood in Scotland, Guarro Casas in Spain, Chartham in the UK) and China (Quzhou).
Sustainability and respect for the environment have always been at the core of Arjowiggins, and this continues to be the case with the many internal and external ongoing initiatives that the company continues to promote. There is also a focus on maintaining the group’s position as a pioneer in development of innovative, high added value creative and technical paper products.
History
The company's origins go back to 1761 when Buckland Mill in Dover in Kent commenced operations.[1]
Meanwhile, in France, in the middle of the 20th century there were four competing paper mills that manufactured sophisticated paper products with high added value, especially security papers (banknotes, passports, etc.). A joint merger plan was drawn up in 1954 and led to the formation of the first French paper-manufacturing group: ARJOMARI. The name of the group came from the first two letters of the names of the paper mills participating in the merger: Arches, Johannot, Marais, Rives.[2]
In 1890 Buckland Mill was bought by Wiggins Teape a business formed by Edward Wiggins and Henry Teape when they incorporated their paper milling business some 40 years earlier.[1]
In 1970 the Company was acquired by BAT Industries[3] who went on to acquire Appleton Papers of the US in 1978. The business expanded rapidly in the 1980s as it exploited the market in carbonless paper. In 1989 the UK and US paper businesses were demerged from BAT Industries and integrated to form Wiggins Teape Appleton. In 1991 it merged with Arjomari-Prioux of France to form Arjowiggins Appleton.[3] Its distribution business was demerged in 2000 as Antalis.[4]
It was acquired by Worms & Cie in 2000.[5] Worms & Cie evolved to become Sequana Capital but was placed in liquidation in 2019.[6] A management buyout of the Arjo Wiggins business by managing director, Jonathan Mitchell, was completed in September 2019.[7]
