In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wiki-Conference NYC 2010, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia Ambassador Program and Wikipedia Academy, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the May meeting's minutes).
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

NYC Meetup: Saturday, December 4
Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.
A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.
This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!

Firefox & WM1.17: found a solution, if not the cause
Hi jeremyb, Many thanks for answering my questions on #wikipedia-tech yesterday (assuming you're the same jeremyb??). Just thought i'd let you know that I tried resetting all my preferences to the defaults and the issue hasn't since recurred, so it seems it was a combination of my set-up (Firefox 3.6.10, WinXP, who knows what else) and one or more of the gadgets or other options i'd selected. Afraid I didn't make a note of which they were before I restored the defaults, but it wasn't the skin as I hadn't changed from the default Vector. I've since changed some of the preferences away from their defaults without any problem, but not reselected any gadgets apart from popups, which I find indespensible. I'm sure I had selected some other gadgets, but I don't miss them so clearly I wasn't making much use of them, and as the problem was always unpredictably intermittent it doesn't seem worth experimenting with turning them on purely to satisfy my curiousity about which was the cause of the issue. Moving right along...
Hey, Jeremyb. I believe my introduction for American Apocalypse is almost complete. I say "almost" because, according to my notes, I should be able to include a weblink so that the title becomes "clickable". I know to do this I must enter the URL first, followed by the title, with all of it enclosed by double brackets on both ends. What I don't know is, do I leave the apostrophes around the title when I do this, or no? Also, what I'm making "clickable" is in the body, not the header, yes?
And then, this next part is the one I find most daunting, cheifly because of the seemingly stringent citation rules. But then, perhaps I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill. Won't know until I try, will I?
So, if/when you're so inclined, would you be so kind as to check out my intro, explain the "clickable" format, and perhaps even clue me in to the most common pitfalls to avoid when filling in the body of my entry?
As ever, your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Jeremy, in case you are a maintainer of Wikimedia Tool Labs, please be notified that the "Articles created" link located at the bottom of the page "User contributions" doesn't seem to work but say "No webservice" instead. - @Synsepalum2013: I wonder where you got my name from? Per https://tools.wmflabs.org/, the sole maintainer of everything under https://tools.wmflabs.org/sigma/ is user:Σ. In this case, the likely cause is that the user (may have) ignored the numerous warnings on mailarchive:labs-l about the pending migration out of the old datacenter. The deadline passed and it was migrated for them but the webservice is not started automatically (in case something was migrated incorrectly or there's a dependency on e.g. a crontab. or a tool needs conversion from .htaccess to the lighttpd format). The instructions for maintainers to start the webservice for their own tool have appeared on list numerous times as well. btw, in the future, please explicitly include the URLs for pages you're referring too. --Jeremyb (talk) 15:55, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

- Ahhh, well I think the error page has another error with (probably) the same cause: the URL mentioned at the top says it's The URI you have requested, http://tools.wmflabs.org/?503, but that's not actually the URI I requested. So I guess we need a bug filed about the error page. OCHA Maps
Your spam of OCHA maps with the use of bots is unacceptable. An ongoing discussion on the "New Map" section of the page talk of the "United Kingdom" page is getting them all removed. WikiImprovment78 (talk) 21:54, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
- @WikiImprovment78: Thanks for letting me know. Surely you must be confused (or else feel free to interpret this as "citation needed"/{{fact}}). The only relevant bot that ran (AFAIK) did no spamming and it was approved in advance. It ran only on commons. (not any wikipedia) Each wiki (wikipedia language or sister project) can decide on its own how maps should be chosen and whether to use the OCHA maps in articles (or other places) or not. And presumably where there is no existing policy on how to choose a map then fall back to broader policies. e.g. I saw in the UK edit summaries someone mentioned WP:BRD. P.S. in the future it would nice if your messages referring to other pages linked to those pages instead of just mentioning the title. --Jeremyb (talk) 06:44, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

- Neonorange, not sure exactly what you mean. There's more than one page 10 in every issue of that paper. The C is significant to identify which page 10. Can you please stop fucking with Aaron's page. His correct middle name is Josef, not Michael. This has been corrected many times and proof that it is actually Josef has been provided over and over and some idiots keeping making it wrong again. It was wrong (Michael) when CNN sourced the info, and now the article which sourced erroneous material is being use as proof that the error is correct. It's JOSEF. See all the court docs, MA Dept of Corrections Inmate info and briefs from his lawyer. I asked his mom, she said it's Josef and was never Michael. Please stop vandalizing.

On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism. New and experienced editors are welcome. Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives. A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. The WikiArte (Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamerica) edit-a-thon is a global campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latin American arts and culture and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. Featuring an opening Artists' Panel at 10am, with Sol Aramendi, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, and Marisa Morán Jahn, to be moderated by Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, curator at El Museo del Barrio. The Museum of Modern Art and Fundacion Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros are uniting with international allies to focus on the lives and works of Latin American artists, architects and designers. With keystone events scheduled for October 22 in New York City and other cities throughout the month (Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Caracas, & others), the campaign aims to further similar goals to Art+Feminism. On Saturday December 3, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fifth Wikipedia edit-a-thon—or, #guggathon—to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from Greater China. The event will cap off Wikipedia Asian Month, an online campaign dedicated to augmenting Asian content on Wikipedia throughout November. New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia, and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. Editors are invited to view the exhibition Tales of Our Time following the event. The Guggenheim aims to raise awareness of the artists featured in the Tales of Our Time exhibition supported by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa, and Art+Feminism.

Cullman Education and Research Building at the Museum of Modern Art, 4 West 54th Street, on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. There will be childcare, snacks, multiple trainings and panel discussions. People of all gender identities and expressions welcomed and encouraged to attend. On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history. For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.
Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided. We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30. Hello, Jeremyb. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

- @Theroadislong: I don't need editing practice, I was testing to see why some pages were rendering differently than others in the official Android app. I think I've confirmed my guess about what was happening; don't need to do any more tests.

None of the edits should have changed page rendering (unless one had some really misleading syntax to begin with). one of the three is more clear the way I left it and I'll revert it back to my version. Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing
Hello,
There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.
There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

Event coordinator
Hi, the English Wikipedia recently created a new user permission for editors involved in off-wiki outreach work, event coordinator. This new permission allows users to mark accounts for confirmed for up to 10 days, and also allows them to create accounts for events without rate limits without some of the features of the account creator right that aren't used at edit-a-thons and other events. I have added the event coordinator permission to your account and removed the account creator permission, as you appear to have been using it mainly for outreach work.
This should have no noticeable impact on your ability to create accounts, and will give you the extra ability to temporarily confirm accounts if you need to. - @TonyBallioni: I followed your link but didn't see anything spelling out which are without some of the features of the account creator right that aren't used at edit-a-thons and other events. spoofing/blacklist checkboxes? I didn't use them much but did occasionally if e.g. there was a global account that was 10 years old and no recently created connected local accounts and no accounts at all had ever made any edits. I was involved with ACC at one point but I don't appear to have an account on the current iteration of the interface. anyway don't have time to pick up ACC again right now and checkboxes are nbd for now but wanted to clarify what you meant. thanks for the new bits. --Jeremyb (talk) 03:54, 23 May 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Jeremyb. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City. New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events. |

(I'll spend some time in Copenhagen too not just Stockholm) I have a driver's license and [3] says I can drive in Sweden with that but I cannot do manual transmission, only automatic. You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for Met Fashion Edit-a-thon @ Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side. Together, we'll expand Wikipedia:WikiProject Fashion topics for basic clothing types that can be illustrated by the Met collection, and also past Costume Institute exhibitions! It's the last weekend for Camp: Notes on Fashion, and we will have an intro talk to the exhibit by a guest from the Costume Institute, and participants will then be able to visit it on their own. Galleries will be open this evening until 9 pm. With refreshments, and there will be a wiki-cake! Open to everyone at all levels of experience, wiki instructional workshop and one-on-one support will be provided.

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.
