Biography
Alfredo studied for a degree in Physics (1967) and in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (1966) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He has a master's degree in Applied Mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the University of New York (New York University) (1969) and a master's degree in Statistics from the Imperial College of Science & Technology in London (1970). He has a PhD in Mathematics from the University of London (1973).[citation needed]
He founded and directed the Quintana Roo Research Center , AC (CIQRO) (1978 - 1985), (today ECOSUR ) dedicated to sustainable development, with the mission of investigating and promoting the establishment of an alternative development model for the state of Quintana Roo.[1] The Secretariat of Public Education (Mexico)(SEP), the government of the state of Quintana Roo, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the National Council of Science and Technology participated in it's creation. (CONACYT) and the National Hydraulic Plan, today the National Water Commission(CNA).[2][3]
As director of the CIQRO he coordinated the foundation of the Reserve Sian Ka'an [4] [5] , declared by Unesco as Heritage of mankind in 1986. He supervised the creation of the Botanical Garden "Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín” that has 65 hectares of extension; which includes two local ecosystems: the medium sub-evergreen forest and the mangrove swamp. [6] [7]
Likewise, it contributed to the design and dissemination of eco-technological models applied in rural and fishing communities of Quintana Roo, such as the use of solar and wind energy in homes and production systems.
Commissioned by the head of the Ministry of Public Education, Jesús Reyes Heroles, he participated in establishing policies for the use of computers in the National System of Higher Education in Mexico (1986).[8]
He held the position of Technical Director of the Liaison Coordination of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) (1997 - 1999), as well as Deputy Director of Technological Innovation for Scientific Dissemination, in the General Directorate of Scientific Dissemination of that same institution (1999 - 2006). [9] After that, he became a research professor at the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) from 2006 to 2014.
Distinctions
In 2004, he received the Ecological Merit Award in the individual category on World Environment Day, June 5, for his contributions to the protection of natural resources and the sustainable management of the environment. This is the highest award given by the Mexican Government in this area. [10] [11] [12]
