The twenty-third season of the Pokémon animated series is known as Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター, Poketto Monsutā) in Japan, Pocket Monsters W (포켓몬스터 W, Poketmonseuteo W) in South Korea, and internationally as Pokémon Journeys: The Series. The season premiered on November 17, 2019 on TV Tokyo in Japan, and on April 8, 2020 on Tooniverse in South Korea. In the United States, it is a web television season scheduled for a June 12, 2020 release on Netflix. This season follows the adventures of Ash Ketchum (voiced in Japanese by Rika Matsumoto, in Korean by Lee Seon-ho, and in English by Sarah Natochenny) and new protagonist Goh (voiced in Japanese by Daiki Yamashita, in Korean by Song Harim, and in English by Zeno Robinson)[1] as they travel across all eight regions of the Pokémon franchise, including the new Galar region from Pokémon Sword and Shield, and learn to use Gigantamax moves.[2][3]
On April 19, 2020, TV Tokyo, MediaNet and ShoPro announced that the series will be going on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, with production temporarily suspended. Reruns of old episodes of the Pokémon anime will start reairing on TV Tokyo in Japan on April 26, 2020.[4]. On May 31, 2020, the production of the new episodes was resumed after Japan announced the cancellation of the Emergency situation. The new episodes will air again from June 7, 2020.[5][6] On April 23, 2020, The Pokémon Company International announced that Netflix has secured U.S rights to the season. The first twelve episodes will be available for streaming on June 12, 2020, with additional episodes to be released quarterly.[7] The series premiered on Teletoon in Canada on May 9, 2020.[8] The show is set for release on September 1, 2020 on Pop in the United Kingdom.[9]
The Japanese opening song is "One, Two, Three" (1・2・3 ワン・ツー・スリー, Wan, Tsū, Surī) by After the Rain's Soraru and Mafumafu. The ending song is "Pokémon Shiritori (Full Size Ver.)" (ポケモンしりとり フルサイズVer., Pokémon Shiritori Furu Saizu Ver.) by the Pokémon Music Club's Pokémon Kids 2019. The Korean opening song is "Start of a Journey" (여행의 시작, Yeohaeng-ui Sijak) by Lee Il-song. The ending song is "Memorizing Pokémon Names" (포켓몬 이름 외우기, Pokémon Ireum Oeugi) by Cha$e."[10][11] The English opening song, "Journey Starts Today",[12] is performed by Canadian indie pop band Walk off the Earth.[13]
