There is always confusion over Vanajari and Banjara castes in Maharashtra. Many authors tried to conclude that both the castes are one same, but it not the fact. Vanjari community is having mother tongue as Marathi and Banjara mother tongue is mixed rajsathani and Marathi,i.e.Lamani or Banjari language. All traditions of Vanjari are similar to Maratha community in Maharashtra also some surnames or kul are similar to Marathas. However some of surnames of vanjari are not matching with any other caste in Maharashtra. Many Vanjari kuls or surnames are found in Gujjar and Jaat community in Rajasthan Haryana and Gujrath. For example, Karaad , Bangar, Nagar or Nagare, Palve or Palav, Mundhe or Mundhan etc surnames are found in gujjar and vangujjar. Also surnames like Hange or Hanga, Ghugh or Ghughe,Bhange or Bhangou,Bongane or Bongan, Mundhe or Mundhi etc are found in Jaat community. These surnames are also found in marathas but very rarely.But surnames like Jadhavar or Jadhav, Kale, Bangar, Lahane etc also found in marathas. It means Vanjari community came from Rajasthan and was separated from Gujjar and Jaat before 500 years. Gujjar and jaat are also originated from one stock. After coming to Maharashtra they mixed with local Marathas and in due course of time adopted their language and traditions too. Also due to alliance with local marathas in early stages there may be inter caste marriages which make them possible to adopt local language and traditions and some surnames. . But after some years it might have stopped due to strong caste spirits developed. However Basic origin of vanjari community is found in gujjar and Jaats. Also many Maratha surnames like Pawar, Chavan, Shisode, Nikam, Taur, Kuwar, Bhambre, Deore, More, Shelar, Rane, Jadhav and many more are matching with Surnames of Rajputs (and rarely with gujjar and Jaats also). It means some of Maratha kul also came from north and mixed with local community far before 1000-1200 years and become marathas. It means all these four communities are having some common origin in less or more percentage.

The view expressed in the 1961 edition of the Gazetteer of Maharashtra that Banjaras and Vanjaris are the two sub-tribes of a larger tribal community needs to be revised in the light of the available evidence. It is more realistic to treat Banjara and Vanjari as two different ethnic groups unrelated to each other. The description of the Banjara community in the reports of the British Government as exhibiting criminal tendencies is not applicable to the Vanjari community of Maharashtra which is mainly agriculturist community. Changed redirect

I have changed the redirect to Banjara to Vanjari caste . Just in a nutshell banjara are from rajasthan and vanjari from andhra pradesh and maharashtra of indian states.
