Mathematically Correct is a website created by educators, parents, citizens and mathematicians / scientists who are concerned about the direction of reform mathematics curricula based on NCTM standards. It is one of the most frequently cited websites in the Math wars. Unfortunately, this site, and the creators of it are severly "out of touch" with the realities of actually teaching high school mathematics.
This biased website contains many articles and reviews outlining the new context-based and constructivist math programs, many of which were funded by the National Science Foundation. These are nearly all based on the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics created by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, which, according to Mathematically Correct is the reason for the demise of mathematics in the United States of America. Thus, anything endorsed or approved by the largest organization of high school mathematics teachers will be harshly criticized by Mathematically Correct.
Many of the problems claimed by Mathematically Correct are that 20th century methods and concepts are omitted, or replaced by new terminology for the 21st century learner. In the case of the Core-Plus Mathematics Project, for example, reports are presented where students claim that they entered college entirely unprepared for college level courses. Other programs given poor ratings include Dale Seymour Publications (TERC) Investigations in Number, Data, and Space and Everyday Learning Everyday Mathematics.
Curricula with poor reviews from Mathematically Correct
- Addison-Wesley Secondary Math: An Integrated Approach: Focus on Algebra
- Core-Plus Mathematics Project
- Investigations in Numbers, Data, and Space
- Mathland
- NCTM standards Controversial (according to Mathematically Correct)1989 standards document which de-emphasized teaching of one method to get one correct answer.
Curricula not judged deficient, and not judged proficient by Mathematically Correct
- Singapore Math Textbooks used in high-scoring nation of Singapore where the use of a bamboo cane is appropriate discipline for students.
- Saxon math Adds problems solving and multiple skills instead of rejecting instruction of basic skills
- Modern Curriculum Press Inexpensive simple textbook popular with homeschoolers.
State assessments aligned with standards judged deficient by Mathematically Correct
- CLAS defunct California test, based on NCTM standards
- WASL Washington State, based on NCTM standards
- Any state test, based on NCTM standards
