Raeesah Begum Farid Khan (born 1994) is a Singaporean activist and politician of the Workers' Party.[1] She was elected into the Parliament of Singapore as a representative for the Sengkang Group Representation Constituency following the 2020 Singaporean general election.[2]
Career
Raeesah has been an activist since she was 17, mainly focusing on refugee issues.[1] Prior to entering politics, she studied economics and marketing at Murdoch University.[3] She is also the founder of the Reyna Movement.[1][3]
In the 2020 Singaporean general election, she contested for the Sengkang GRC under the banner of the Workers' Party. She is also the youngest candidate of the party.[3] She was subsequently elected with 52.13% of the votes.[4]
Controversy
Shortly before the 2020 election, Raeesah faced criticisms after her comments which she had made years earlier during the midst of the City Harvest Church scandal resurfaced.[5] According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), she wrote a comment that the country's law is discriminating citizens while rich Chinese and white people were treated differently.[5] She later apologised for the remark.[5]
