'''Gowda''' is a surname title native to the [[Karnataka]] state of India. It is meant for a person who is a farmer by profession and owns land in the village. The Kannada linguist [[Shamba Joshi]] and others propose a derivation from the Sanskrit - ''gau'' (cow) and ''govala'' (keeper of Gau/Cow)(Govala->Goula->Gowda).<ref name="Grama">{{cite book|author=Dr. Ganapati Gowda|title=Grama Okkaligara Samsrutika Ananyate Mattu Samakaleena Sandarbhagalu|year=2011|publisher=Kannad University, Hampi|url=http://www.kannadauniversity.org/publications.html}}</ref> Moreover, though the vokkaligas did practise animal husbandry, Govalas (whence ''Golla'') or the Yadavas/Kurubas form a separate caste group and they were traditionally herdsmen.<ref name="KTMargaret_1999">{{cite book |editor=K.
