== Plot ==
The novel takes place in [[Kenya]] in the weeks before, during, and after the Kenyan general elections of 2007. The effect of the [[2007–2008 Kenyan crisis|post-election violence (PEV)]] is shown through the relationships of various people’s lives including the daughter of a corrupt politician, the husband running for political office, the retired corrupt politician, the politician’s granddaughter, a househelp, and a driver.

During the lead-up to the general election, the lives of the main characters change dramatically and they’re torn apart by the choices they make in their personal lives and the brutality that ensues.

When the violence breaks out, each of the characters in the book is in a different part of the country, and through their attempts to travel back to Nairobi - the reader is exposed to all the ways that PEV affected different parts of the country.
