The school opened in 1980, and has a co-ed student body consisting of 750 students, admitted from a diverse applicant pool representing all parts of Palm Beach County. The school is governed by the Diocese of Palm Beach, and is administered by Carmelite Friars and Dominican Sisters.

History

The first and southernmost academic wing

The construction of Pope John Paul II High School was begun in February 1980. The first classes were held the following August. The first year the school consisted of 300 freshmen and 150 sophomore students. The second year classes were held for freshmen, sophomores and juniors. The third year 1982-1983, was the first year as a four-year high school and saw the first graduating class. Originally, the school operated as part of the Archdiocese of Miami. However, in 1984 the school became part of the newly formed Diocese of Palm Beach. The campus and student body has continued to grow, and in 2000 a new Media Research Center was added. In the summer of 2002, a new Administration/Student Services Building was opened, and in 2004, a third academic wing was added to the school to house the growing science department, music department, and foreign language department. In the same year, a new gatehouse was built on the east entrance.

Student Body

In its admissions process, the school gives preference to students from Palm Beach County private Catholic middle schools.[1] In part due to the preference toward private school students and in part due to Boca Raton's high median family income ($77,861)[2], the student body consists primarily of students from very affluent families. Students wear school uniforms and obey a strict code of conduct. Those students who uphold the highest standards of scholarship, leadership, service, and character are selected by the faculty for the National Honor Society.

Mission Statement

The school upholds the following mission statement:

Our community's purpose is to communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the teaching ministry. Together, we develop our spiritual, physical, and moral gifts through academic excellence.

Relationship with Boston College

The school's colors and athletic mascot, the eagle, are influenced heavily by those of Boston College, a private Jesuit university. PJPII is informally viewed as a feeder school for BC, as a large number of graduates are accepted and choose to attend.
