Gangadhar Meher University, formerly Sambalpur College and Gangadhar Meher College, is a state university situated in Sambalpur, Odisha, India. It is named after the illustrious Odia poet, Gangadhar Meher. Atanu Kumar Pati is the current Vice-Chancellor. [1] [2]

History

The University was established as college in 1944 as Sambalpur College with 192 students. The name of the institution was changed to Gangadhar Meher College in 1949. It was upgraded to a university in 2015, and has been renamed as Gangadhar Meher University.

Facilities

Hostel

sprawling campus of Gangadhar Meher University stretches over an area of 49.2 acres. The campus boasts of 04 hostels for boys and 03 for girls to accommodate about 550 boys and 450 girls, respectively. Hostel life in GMU is a pleasant and memorable experience. The boarders of all classes and branches of study reside together and no segregation on discrimination is made among the students in this regard. It fosters the spirit of camaraderie and togetherness among all the inmates irrespective of their age or seniority.

Central Library

The Central Library came into its existence in 1944. At present, it stands as a modern library with a lot of automation and one of the largest libraries in terms of the number of books and journals. Presently it contains 116671 Books, subscription to 63 Journals and 15 Magazines.

The library is INFLIBNET enabled and subscribed PROQUEST for accesses to e-resources which helps in searching the data from the following resources.

Banking Facilities The University has a branch of the UCO Bank in the campus in which students and the staff conduct banking transactions as per their requirement. Application forms for important national level examinations are also sold by the bank which is highly beneficial and convenient for the students to access. An ATM of SBI has also been installed at the main gate of the University to facilitate the students and staff.

On the whole the GMU campus provides a healthy, congenial and trouble free environment that makes it a preferred destination for students in pursuit of higher education.
