Alumni status reconciled
I have modified the language in the "Alumni" section regarding Philo Farnsworth to reconcile it with the "Notable Research and Awards" mention of him. Philo Farnsworth only briefly attended BYU before a falling out with the department and moving to Salt Lake City, therefore I edited those references in a series of four edits (mentioned below) to fix an incorrect reference--my bad--and clarify the language. type: space grant
is it normal for us universities to be designated "space grant" in the infobox? --2001:470:5105:0:31C9:6236:9346:CEA9 (talk) 23:53, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, land grant, sea grant, and space grant status should be listed there, though it's not always done consistently. -- Beland (talk) 00:10, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
- First, you need to verify that the institution is actually part of those programs. It is not, for example, a land-grant university.
- Second, if it is part of the "Sea Grant" and "Space Grant" programs, why should those be included in the "Type" parameter of the infobox? How have they shaped the institution in ways that are so significant that we can say that the institution is of their "type?" (Note I think this argument is settled for any institution that is a land-grant university, particularly the first one or two land-grant acts; those acts imposed significant requirements on the curricular offerings and service mission of the institutions. There have been many scholarly articles and books on that topic.) ElKevbo (talk) 01:23, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
national championships
If somebody wants to go do some research, might be nice to list the 14 national championships like "football, volleyball, women's cross country..."? :) Rogerdpack (talk) 17:26, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
Athletics
Hi all! I have noticed that several IP addresses have recently found a need to edit the athletics section regarding various athletes. I presume that other athletes which did not win "national awards" are just as notable as those who did. In other words, Tyler Haws and Kyle Collinsworth, while they may not have won such national recognition, are notable enough to be mentioned, especially due to their ncaa records and making it to professional leagues. Just wanted to get the community's agreement before I added them back. Thoughts? Rollidan (talk) 17:08, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I already added them back, probably while you were typing this, with an invitation to take it to this talk page if the editors felt they did not belong. ChristensenMJ (talk) 17:18, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
You need to set up criteria for what makes an athlete notable and what does not. Ty Detmer, Danny Ainge were all more noted at BYU than Haws or Collinsworth. Steve Young, Kyle Van Noy are all more noted pros. The limitation to basketball only with 5 year low profile stars is odd. Also BYU winning a Football national championship in 1984 is still commented on nationally.
