WWE 2K Battlegrounds is an upcoming professional wrestling video game developed by Saber Interactive and published by 2K Sports. It is the squeal to WWE All Stars but a spin-off of WWE 2K20. It is expected to be released on September 18, 2020, as the eighth game under the WWE 2K banner. WWE 2K Battlegrounds will replace WWE 2K21 for 2020, following its cancellation, due to COVID-19 Pandemic and the negative reception surrounding WWE 2K20 after its release in October 2019.
Development
In 2019, 2K Battlegrounds' predecessor, WWE 2K20 received "generally unfavorable" reviews on all platforms according to review aggregator Metacritic. Reviewers criticized the physics, graphics, targeting, change in controls and the large number of glitches.[1][2][3]
In 2020, the game was rendered almost unplayable due to a "Y2k20" bug.[4] Due to the number of bugs, player complaints lead to the hashtag #FixWWE2K20 trending on social media.[5]
In April 2020, former WWE video games writer Justin Leeper reported that the successor to 2K20, WWE 2K21 had been canceled. The decision was made due to 2K20's poor sales in addition to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the video game industry. However, Leeper also stated that 2K would release a different type of WWE game in 2020, which is not related to the series, while a future entry would be released in 2021 for the eighth console generation and PC.[6]
On April 27, 2020, 2K announced WWE 2K Battlegrounds as a spin-off to the series, while also announcing that Patrick Gilmore, who worked on previous games, including Disney's Aladdin on Sega Genesis, franchises like Killer Instinct, Medal of Honor, and most recently, Amazon's New World, would be the new executive producer.[7] The trailer featured John Cena, The Rock, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair and Stone Cold Steve Austin.[8] On May 4, 2020, an ESRB Rating confirmed that 2K Battlegrounds would be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch (the first WWE game to be released on Switch since 2K18) and would be the first WWE game to release on Stadia, but 2K have yet to confirm this.[9]
