The One and Only Ivan is an upcoming 2020 American fantasy film directed by Thea Sharrock from a screenplay written by Mike White, based on the children's novel of the same name by K. A. Applegate. The film stars the voices of Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren, Brooklynn Prince, Chaka Khan, Ron Funches, Phillipa Soo, and Mike White, with the human characters portrayed by Ramón Rodríguez, Ariana Greenblatt, and Bryan Cranston.[1]

The One and Only Ivan is set to be released on Disney+ on August 21, 2020.

Premise

A gorilla named Ivan (Rockwell) lives in a cage at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade with an aging elephant named Stella (Jolie) and a dog named Bob (DeVito) with no recollection of how they got there. They are owned by Mack (Cranston), the owner of the Big Top Mall. When an abused baby elephant named Ruby (Prince) shows up and is taken under Stella's trunk, Ivan starts to care for her as well and along with the janitor's daughter Julia (Ariana Greenblatt), they help to turn things around at the mall.[2]

On April 9, 2014, it was announced that Walt Disney Pictures may adapt the book with Allison Shearmur to produce.[3] On May 6, 2016, it was announced that Mike Newell would direct with a screenplay from White.[4] On March 24, 2017, Sharrock entered negotiations to direct the film after Newell left the project.[5] On October 16, 2017, it was reported that Jolie joined the film as both a producer and the voice of an elephant named Stella.[6] On November 15, 2017, Prince was cast to voice Ruby, the baby elephant.[7]

On January 9, 2018, Ariana Greenblatt joined the cast in a live action role.[8] Producer Shearmur died on January 19, 2018. She will retain her producer credit on the film.[9] On February 23, 2018, Rockwell was cast to voice the titular Ivan, and Cranston was cast as a circus owner, while Brigham Taylor joined as a producer.[10][11] On March 13, 2018, Rodriguez signed on to a live action role, that of the father of Greenblatt's character.[12] On May 1, 2018, it was announced that DeVito and Mirren will voice characters in the film, while Indira Varma and Eleanor Matsuura will appear in live action roles.[2]

Principal photography began on May 1, 2018 in Lakeland, Florida, with locations for the film including the Southgate Shopping Center and Resurrection Catholic Church.[13]

Release

The film was originally scheduled for a theatrical release on August 14, 2020 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.[14] On June 12, 2020, it was announced the film would instead be released on Disney+ a week later on August 21, 2020, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema that started in mid March.[15] With the release of the film's official trailer on July 8, 2020, the film was moved back to its original August 14 release date.[16] It was later returned to August 21.[17]

Reception

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 65% based on 31 reviews, with an average rating of 6.04/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "An uncertain approach to the story's darker themes undermines its emotional stakes, but The One and Only Ivan offers heartwarming entertainment for younger viewers."[18] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 58 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[19]
