The Blaauwberg Coast (simply Blaauwberg) is a coastal suburban region of the City of Cape Town in the Western Cape, South Africa. It is situated north of the Cape Town city centre and at the gateway of the Cape West Coast.

Capetonians often refer to the Blaauwberg Coast as the Western Seaboard or the West Coast.

Geography

The Blaauwberg Coast lies on Table Bay and stretches for 48 km on the Atlantic Ocean coastline from Milnerton in the south to Mamre in the north. Due to its position being on Table Bay, it has the most renowned view of Table Mountain which is where the name Table View derives from. The region also has views of Robben Island, an island in Table Bay about 6 km west of the shoreline.[1][2]

Milnerton is located more towards the city centre whilst suburbs such as Big Bay, Bloubergstrand, Parklands, Rivergate and Sandown are located on the outskirts.

Towns such as Atlantis, Mamre and Melkbosstrand and rural villages such as Morning Star and Pella are exurbs of Cape Town.[3]

Commerce

Milnerton

The Blaauwberg Coast's main town and economic hub is Milnerton. Milnerton is the location of Century City, a mixed-use development which includes corporate headquarters and regional offices, upmarket property and Cape Town's largest shopping centre, Canal Walk. Milnerton also includes three industrial areas and many delearships and restaurants along Koeberg Road (M5)[4][5][6]

Atlantis is a smaller economic centre with a developing industrial area, the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (SEZ).[7]

Cape Town International Airport is the primary airport serving the Cape Town metropolitan area

The Cape Town International Airport is located on the southernmost border of the Northern Suburbs and is situated in Matroosfontein. It offers domestic and international flights to Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.[8]

Rail

Century City Train Station

Blaauwberg is the only in Cape Town with a limited rail network and served by two commuter stations in Milnerton which are the Ysterplaat and Century City stations. These commuter train stations are operated by Metrorail Western Cape which operates commuter rail services in the Cape Metropole and surrounding towns.[9]

Bus

The MyCiti Bus Rapid Transit is a commuter bus service which was inaugurated on May 2010 in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was held in South Africa. It operates heavily in the Blaauwberg Coast and operates as far as Mamre in the north.[10][11]

MyCiti has it's own dedicated lanes which were created to not disrupt traffic and for faster travel commuter time.

MyCiti Milnerton Station

The trunk routes in Blaauwberg are between Atlantis and Milnerton (T02), Atlantis and Century City, Du Noon and Milnerton (T01) and Du Noon and Century City. T01 and T02 connect to the Civic Centre in the Central Business District. From there, MyCiti branches out further as far Hout Bay, Simon's Town and Khayelitsha. Branch routes operate in the neighbourhood areas of Big Bay, Parklands, Table View and other areas of Milnerton such as Century City, Montague Gardens and Killarney Gardens.[12][13]

The MyCiti Bus rapid transit makes up for the very limited commuter rail service in the Blaauwberg Coast.

Roads

The Blaauwberg Coast is cornered by the N1 highway (to Cape Town and Paarl) to the east and N7 highway to the south (to Malmesbury and Goodwood). The N1 borders on Paarden Eiland whilst the N7 borders on Milnerton, Du Noon and Morning Star.

Regional routes in Blaauwberg include the R27 (West Coast Road) which connects to the N1 in the south and to Langebaan and Velddrif in the north, the R304 which connects Atlantis to Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands and the R307 (Dassenberg Road) which connects to the R27 just north of Melkbosstrand in the south to Morreesburg in the north.[14][15][16]

Major metropolitan routes in Blaauwberg are the M5 (Koeberg Road) which connects Du Noon to Muizenberg, the M8 (Bosmansdam Road) which connects Milnerton to Edgemead and the M14 (Blaauwberg Rd/Otto du Plessis Dr/Plattekloof Rd) which connects to Melkbosstrand and Parow.[17][18][19][20]
