The New Era (2016–present)

The WWE SmackDown Latino Championship was introduced on the August 23, 2016 episode of SmackDown, when SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan and Commissioner Shane McMahon announced the creation of the championship, a SmackDown latinos exclusive title and announced that the inaugural champion would be determined at Backlash in a six-pack challenge between Andrade "Cien" Almas, Germán Figueroa, Niebla Roja, Rey Escorpión, Rey Mysterio, and Texano Jr., where Mysterio became the inaugural champion.

On January 28, 2018, at the Royal Rumble, Mysterio made a one night appearance, entering as a surprise entrant at number 27 in the Royal Rumble match. On September 19, it was confirmed Rey Mysterio had signed a two-year contract with WWE.

On February 3, 2019, at NXT's pay-per-view Halftime Heat, Leo Benites defeated Angel Garza to determine the last competitor at the first ever Latino's Elimination Chamber match at the namesake pay–per–view. Leo Benites debuted on the main roster at the event, where successfully defeated Rey Mysterio, El Texano Jr., Kalisto, Primo, Carlito and the previous champion Andrade to win the Raw Latino Championship for the first time in his career.

On February 27, 2020 at Super ShowDown, Leo Benites defended his Raw Latino Championship against Andrade, making it the first time a latino championship was defended in Saudi Arabia. On May 10, at the Money in the Bank pay–per–view, Angel Garza defeated Andrade, Rey Mysterio, Santana, Ortiz and Golden Magic in a Money in the Bank ladder match to be crowed the interim champion for the Raw Latino Championship duo Benites being banned as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The next night on Raw, Rollins attacked Rey Mysterio and injured his eye with the steel ring steps. At The Horror Show at Extreme Rules on July 19, Rollins was victorious in a "Eye for an Eye match" against Mysterio after using the ring steps to remove Mysterio's eye. Dominik Mysterio – Rey Mysterio's son – thereafter came for revenge over the next coming weeks and confront Rollins about the attacks on both him and his father. A match was then made official for Rollins and Mysterio at Summerslam which was revealed as a Street Fight. At the event, Rollins defeated Mysterio. Leo Benites returned on August 31 episode of Raw, where he congratulated Angel Garza for his work as an interin champion. However, Garza claimed to be the real champion. This led the two to clash on September 27 at the Clash of Champions for the title, where Benites emerged victorious.
