The Manipal Institute of Technology, or MIT Manipal is a college of engineering and technology located in Manipal, Karnataka, India.

MIT Manipal is a leading engineering college in southern India, part of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education or MAHE, a deemed university based in Manipal. It awards undergraduate degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, Biotech Engineering, Mechatronix Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Printing Technology and Architecture as well as some graduate level degrees. There is a sister campus of the institute located in Sikkim, India.

History

MIT Manipal was established in 1957 as Manipal Engineering College, and renamed in 1974. It was founded by Dr. T. M. A. Pai, the visionary founder of Manipal, and the management of MAHE is overseen by his heirs. It was one of the first privately funded technical institutes in India, and continues to remain so.

Civil engineering was the first discipline to be offered at the institute, but by 1961, full undergraduate programs were available to students in the areas of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering also. The first hostels (dorms) were established on the campus in 1961 for students from outside the region. The college has steadily grown in size as well as scope since its inception. Today, it has the capability to house most, if not all, of its students on the campus in its fifteen different hostel (dorm) buildings, and can be considered a fully residential campus.

The institute was originally affiliated to the Karnatak University in Dharwad. This meant that the students of the institute were awarded degrees by the Karnatak University. In 1965, the institute affiliated itself with the Mysore University in Mysore. More courses were added over the decades as the college expanded. In 1974, it was renamed and brought under the purview of Mangalore University, and this status would continue until the establishment of MAHE in the late 1990s. Since 2000, the college has been designated a deemed university, a status that allows it to operate autonomously without affiliations to larger universities. Smaller private colleges in India are usually affiliated to larger universities which oversee the academics and award the degrees, like MIT Manipal was in the past.

In 1993, the state government of Karnataka introduced statewide measures regulating the intake of students to private institutes, including MIT Manipal, and this had a tremendous financial impact on the college because it also meant that the fee structure was regulated by the government. The college was designated a Linguistic Minority Institute between 1993 and 1999, which meant that a significant fraction of the intake was reserved for those students whose native tongue was Konkani. Konkani is the language spoken by the family of Dr. T. M. A. Pai, founder of the institute, and also a large part of the population of the region around Manipal.

An interesting event in the history of the college was the visit of the Dalai Lama in 1966.

Reputation and Ranking

Although there are no comprehensive rankings issued by any agencies for engineering colleges in India, admissions to MIT Manipal are among the most sought-after in the country.MIT has never believed in comparisons .MIT has constantly been ranked among the best institutes in the country .MIT hopes to be of a global reckoning soon. MIT is a constituent of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, which is accredited by the Government of India's National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)[1]. Very recently however the Institue was ranked the 13 in the country in the field of engineering education by "The Telegraph" Calcutta. The University has often been called the "Harvard" of India for it's pioneering efforts in the field of private education spreading across all streams.

Undergraduate Degrees and Admissions

MIT Manipal offers undergraduate (Bachelor's degree) courses in the following disciplines:

General admissions are open to Indian nationals on the basis of performance in the All India MAHE Under Graduate Entrance Test (UGET). Usually, only candidates who have scored 50% or more in the UGET are considered for admissions. The test consists of sections in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English and includes questions based on standard high school syllabi in India. Testing takes place annually in major cities across India. Admissions to the Architecture program are based on a separate test.

International students follow different admission procedures and are subject to different fee structures.

Students may choose to enroll in the Twinning Program wherein the first two years of their coursework are undertaken at MIT Manipal and the remainder are completed at a college or university in the United States. The eventual degree will be awarded by the foreign university.

Graduate Degrees and Admissions

Master of Technology (M.Tech) degrees are offered with the following specializations:

In addition, the following programs are also offered:

Admissions to these programs are either on the basis of an entrance exam or based on performance in an undergraduate degree program. All applicants are required to have appropriate bachelor's degrees.

The institute also offers Ph.D. programs on a full-time or part-time basis for qualified candidates.

Hostels (Dorms)

MIT has hostel blocks for outside students to live in. Blocks are not named. Instead, they are numbered. The oldest block, which is closest to the college is 1st Block. The block farthest from the college is the 10th block.

Girls' and Boys' blocks are separate. Earlier, boys outnumbered girls by a huge margin. Therefore, all girls were limited to one hostel block. But off late, girls have increased greatly in number. This has led to conversion of the first four blocks(1-4) into ladies blocks. Apart from these, two new blocks(by the name New LH and Old LH) have also been made girls' blocks. but now the the new LH & old LH have been given to the boys and a new hostel (13th block) has been made for girls

  1. Each hostel has 24x7 power supply. There are "MIT Power Houses" that run on diesel when there is no power supply from the local power grid.
  2. Each block has helpers called "room boys", who help in maintenance of the rooms.
  3. There are TV sets provided for each floor of the hostel, which is utilized by the residents for watching cricket/football matches and watching other programs as well.
  4. Water supply(both drinking and non-drinking) is provided in each hostel block. Recently, hot water facility was also provided to some blocks.
  5. LAN has been provided in most of the hostels.

Geography
