Artificial pancreas is an ambiguous term used primarily in marketing materials and non-medical publications to refer to almost any of the various technologies (or combinations of technologies) that seek to replicate the endocrine functions of the pancreas in humans.
As diabetes mellitus is the most common disease of pancreatic dysfunction, the term artificial pancreas has been most commonly used to refer to automated insulin delivery systems, but may also refer to:
- Pancreatic islet cell replacement technologies, including those designed to eliminate the requirement for immunosuppression in patients who receive islet cell transplants
- Automated glucose clamps
- Ambulatory multi-hormone pumps that deliver multiple pancreatic hormones
