Spontaneous is a 2020 American science fiction romantic black comedy film, written and directed by Brian Duffield, in his directorial debut. It stars Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, Hayley Law, Piper Perabo, Rob Huebel and Yvonne Orji.
It was released in a limited release on October 2, 2020, followed by video on demand on October 6, 2020, by Paramount Pictures.
Synopsis
Mara Carlyle meets the boy of her dreams just when a pandemic of her fellow students spontaneously exploding breaks out. When students in their high school begin inexplicably exploding , seniors Mara (Katherine Langford) and Dylan (Charlie Plummer) struggle to survive in a world where each moment may be their last. As an unexpected romance blossoms between them, Mara and Dylan discover that when tomorrow is no longer promised, they can finally start living for today. After the death of many of her friends and her boyfriend, Mara must come to terms with what life means to her.

Production
In June 2016, it was announced Awesomeness Films had acquired rights to the film, with Brian Duffield writing the script, based upon the novel of the same name by Aaron Starmer. Brian Robbins and Matt Kaplan will produce under the banner, while Nicki Cortese will produce under her Jurassic Party Productions banner.[2] In December 2017, Katherine Langford joined the cast of the film.[3]
In January 2018, Charlie Plummer and Hayley Law joined the cast of the film.[4][5] In February 2018, Piper Perabo, Rob Huebel, Yvonne Orji, Laine MacNeil, Clive Holloway, Bzhaun Rhoden, and Chris Shields joined the cast of the film.[6]
Principal photography began in January 2018.[7]
Release
It was released in a limited release on October 2, 2020, followed by video on demand on October 6, 2020, by Paramount Pictures.[8]
