St. Scholastica Academy is a private, Roman Catholic, all-girls high school in Covington, Louisiana. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Background

St. Scholastica Academy (SSA) was established in 1903 by the Benedictine Sisters.[2] St. Scholastica was St. Benedict's twin sister. St Scholastica's foundation is based on four pillars. These four pillars are located in front of the school's entrance. SSA offers a preparatory curriculum that is required of all students with an accelerated program offered to students meeting the criteria. SSA offers Honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment courses. Presently, SSA employs a rotating block schedule structured with five courses meeting for 75 minutes each day. Math and Science courses are paired to ensure connection-making between the two subjects. Meeting for a 75-minute block ensures enough time for in-depth, rigorous, hands-on teaching resulting in increased achievement, comprehension and enjoyment of learning. Additionally, because students earn eight credits per year, they are able to select more electives giving them a stronger educational background with a total of 32 credits in only four years, compared to the typical 28 that most schools offer.

Graduates earned an average ACT score of 25.4.[3] Ninety-nine percent of students matriculate to college.

History

In 1902 ground was broken in the building of a new school, St. Scholastica Academy. September 4, 1903, the large bell suspended above the new wooden four-story building rang for the first time. In 2016, Benedictine Hall was transformed into a STEM Building, to configure new science and math classrooms. As of the 2017–2018 school year, SSA operates on rotating block schedule. The new SSA rotating block schedule is structured with five courses meeting for 75 minutes each day.[4] In August 2019, Angelus Hall, a STEM classroom building holding a Mac Lab, TV Production Studio, 7 classrooms for Math & Theology departments, and 1 science lab was completed. Angelus Hall is connected to Benedictine Hall; the construction of Angelus Hall also came with the 10s, 20s, and 30s classroom buildings being demolished as they were outdated and no longer met students' needs.
