The 2020–21 season is Liverpool Football Club's 129th season in existence and the club's 59th consecutive season in the top flight of English football. In addition to the domestic league, Liverpool participates in this season's editions of the FA Cup, the EFL Cup, the FA Community Shield and the UEFA Champions League. The season covers the period from August 2020 to 30 June 2021.

Season review

Pre-season

Liverpool weren't particularly active in the summer window, their only signing of pre-season was Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas,[1] although they were linked with Spanish midfielder Thiago, from Bayern Munich.[2] In terms of senior outgoings, the Reds released Andy Lonergan, Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana,[3] the latter moving to Brighton,[4] and sold Dejan Lovren and Ovie Ejaria.[5][6]

On 19 August, Liverpool announced how they would play two pre-season friendlies, against VfB Stuttgart and RB Salzburg, as part of their pre-season training camp in Austria.[7] Their first pre-season game was played on 22 August against Stuttgart, and the Reds won a comfortable 3–0, thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino, Naby Keïta and Rhian Brewster;[8] their next game was against Red Bull Salzburg three days later – despite conceding an early brace from Patson Daka, they managed to earn a draw with a brace by Brewster.[9] Their next game, and last of pre-season, was played on 5 September, at home against Blackpool – again, the Reds went 2–0 down early on, but goals from Joël Matip, Sadio Mané and Firmino took the game into Liverpool's control, and later goals from Harvey Elliott, Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi and Sepp van den Berg completed a 7–2 route over the Seasiders.[10]

In between their pre-season games, Liverpool, as defending Premier League champions, earned the right to play in the FA Community Shield against FA Cup winners Arsenal – the Reds went a goal down early in the first half conceding to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but Minamino's second half equalizer forced the game to penalties, where Brewster missed the decisive penalty, and Liverpool missed their first chance to win a trophy this season.[11]

September

Liverpool's league season kicked off with a home game against recently promoted Leeds United, on 12 September; in an exciting game, the Reds won 4–3 over last season's Championship winners; Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the early stage by scoring a penalty after a handball by Robin Koch, only for Jack Harrison to equalize for the visitors not long after, only for Virgil van Dijk to restore Liverpool's lead with a header, however, just ten minutes later, van Dijk would be at fault for Patrick Bamford's equalizer, leveling the game once again. Salah scored Liverpool's third only minutes later, concluding a "chaotic" first half. Liverpool were in control until the middle point in the second half, when they conceded once more, this time to Mateusz Klich who scored past Alisson with a "perfect first touch and volley". In the closing stage, Leeds new signing Rodrigo produced a "shocking challenge" on Fabinho, and Liverpool were awarded their second penalty of the night, which Salah put away, completing his hat-trick and giving Liverpool victory in their first league game as defending champions.[12]

On 18 September, Liverpool confirmed the signing of long-term target Thiago, for a fee in the region of £20m.[13] The following day, the Reds reportedly reached an agreement with Wolves on the transfer of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota for a fee of around £41m, which would see youth prospect Ki-Jana Hoever move to Wolves for a potential fee of £13.5m.[14] The move was confirmed on the same day on the club's official website.[15]

The next fixture saw Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea. Initially, the game was relatively balanced for the most part, but the hosts went down to ten men after Christensen's challenge over Mané at the stroke of halftime. Early on in the second half, Mané scored a quick brace – his first was a header from Firmino's cross, only minutes later, he scored his second, capitalizing off Kepa's mistake. Chelsea had a chance to get back in the game after Thiago's foul on Timo Werner in the penalty box, but Jorginho's shot was saved by Alisson. The Reds comfortably dominated the possession, creating several more chances, and won 2–0, leaving London with all three points.[16]

October

On 4 October, Liverpool lost 7–2 away to Aston Villa. The match represents the first time Liverpool conceded 7 goals since 15 April 1963 against Tottenham Hotspur, and was at the hands of a team that was almost relegated at the end of the 2019–20 season.[17] This equals Liverpool's record of the heaviest Premier League defeat with a 5 goal margin.[18] In the next league game away to Everton on 17 October, the game ended 2–2 after Jordan Henderson’s strike to make it 3–2 to Liverpool in second half injury time was controversially ruled out by VAR.[19] With 23 games unbeaten against Everton (a run stretching over a decade) Liverpool set a new club record for the most number of games unbeaten against an opponent.[20] At the beginning of the game, van Dijk suffered an injury following a "rash" challenge by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford; the club confirmed that he would require surgery and a lengthy lay-off to recovery.[21]
