I am a Malaysian-Chinese male currently pursuing a second academic degree in the Britain. I was born one muggy day in Selangor nearly three decades ago; more specifically, I am old enough to remember Dungeons & Dragons and ThunderCats running across my TV screen but not nearly old enough to have caught the original run of Happy Days.

Interests

I am interested in matters pertaining to religion and history, particularly that of Malaysia and China. I am also keen on understanding the impact colonialism has had on modern day inter-ethnic relationships and geopolitics as well as post-colonial responses to such legacies.

As my penultimate userbox indicates, I also practise martial arts although my understanding of fighting systems, most of which was gleaned at an informal level, is generally more broad than deep. Other than sanshou, I am also a sometime exponent of Five Ancestors Fist and Muay Thai though to regard myself as anything more than an armchair enthusiast would border on the spurious.

As far as styles go, mine could be said to be an mish-mash of various influences, most of which have their roots in British journalism. This means I prefer to: omit full stops after abbreviations and in between each letter of an acronym; italicise names of works of arts (in keeping with the style of the The Times but contrary to the recommendations of The Economist and The Guardian); avoid the usage of apostrophes after genetive and plural contractions, eg, MPs’ and 1980s; the anal retentive list goes on.

I prefer the precise elegance of pinyin over other, more unwieldy forms of romanization from Chinese but at the same time I hold a low opinion of Simplified Chinese—both are products of the PRC.

The Book of Zhuangzi the the most important book I have ever read. I am happy and proud to be a Third Culture Kid. (Whahey, out of one salad bowl and into another.)

Anti-Simpsons

I have come to loathe all post-Futurama episodes of The Simpsons—the staff writers have just stopped trying (See: Jumping the shark). Thankfully, Seth McFarlane is there to take up the comedic slack, along with Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

Contributions

Mostly WikiGnome and -Fairy stuff; no major write-ups as yet.

Countries Visited

Asia and Australasia:

 Malaysia  China  Hong Kong  Macau
 Taiwan  Singapore  Thailand  Australia

Europe:

United Kingdom  Belgium  Czech Republic  France
 Portugal

NB: For the purposes of tabulation (cf, final userbox), Hong Kong and Macau obviously do not make the cut—as both are SARs and not countries—but the Republic of China does. Also, I regard the constituent countries of the United Kingdom as distinct and having been to England, Scotland and Wales the Union Flag above would therefore represent a total of three countries visited.
