He succeeded Ndleleni Duma, who had died after a long illness.[2][3] He was elected to a full term in May 2019.[4] In June 2019, he was appointed chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs in the legislature.[5]
