The Wrecks are an American alternative rock band from Thousand Oaks, California. The band is currently made up of Nick Anderson, Nick "Schmizz" Schmidt, Aaron Kelley, and Billy Nally.[1]

History

The idea to form a band began with friends Nick Anderson and Aaron Kelley[2], whose attempts were initially unsuccessful[3] until inviting Nick Schmidt and Billy Nally to the project, the latter two having attended school together in New Jersey.[4] The four had already been acquainted, their prior musical projects being managed by Richard Reines, and Anderson having written for the others for their past projects.[5] Schmidt and Nally immediately met with Anderson and Kelley to record an album. All of the band members were in their early twenties; all hail from the east coast, including Anderson, who is a native of Upstate New York.[6]

The project had formally begun in Thousand Oaks, California, in mid-November 2015.[7] Through a friend's housekeeping engagement, Anderson gained access to a professional home studio, albeit without the owner's permission, and the group self-recorded their debut EP, We Are The Wrecks, in just three days, with sound engineer Andrew D'Angelo serving as co-producer.[8] The band performed at a series of small venues before releasing their debut EP, We Are The Wrecks, in April 2016. In December 2016, the line-up signed with Another Century Records. Soon after, their debut single "Favorite Liar" received significant airplay and charted in the top forty on alternative radio.[9] The single obtained five million Spotify streams within a year of its release[10]; as of December 2020, it has over twenty-five million streams. Harrison Nussbaum played guitar in the original line-up from late 2015 to late 2016[11] until leaving the band and being subsequently replaced by Pittsburgh native Westen Weiss in early 2017.[12][13]

After their record deal, the Wrecks attempted to record their sophomore EP in Los Angeles[14]; however, discontent with its sound, the band abandoned the project to start from scratch. Having depleted their budget, they continued to fund their endeavors by participating in medical studies[15] and working minimum wage jobs.[16] The band temporarily moved into Anderson's grandmother's home in Wellsville, New York and finished their next EP, Panic Vertigo, at the barn studio of friend Patrick Barry. Throughout the process, D'Angelo remained the band's sound engineer and co-producer.[17] The recording process took one and a half years[18], and Panic Vertigo was released on February 16, 2018. Weiss left the band in 2019 to pursue a career in producing, making the Wrecks a four-piece ensemble.

The Wrecks released their debut album, Infinitely Ordinary, on May 1, 2020 via Big Noise Music Group.[19] On December 18, 2020, the Wrecks released their third EP, Static.[20] In November 2020, the band revealed on their Twitter account that another EP would be released in 2021.[21][22]

Touring

The Wrecks have toured with bands such as All Time Low, SWMRS, Waterparks, and the Struts.[23][24] Much of their participation with these bands fell under the Advanced Placement Tour in 2017.[25] Additionally, the Wrecks have opened for Nothing But Thieves, New Politics, and Paramore on nationwide tours.[26]

The Wrecks have also performed at music festivals like the Bunbury Music Festival.[27] After performing as an opening band for All Time Low's "The Young Renegades Tour", the Wrecks embarked on their first headlining tour, the Robot Army Tour, in November 2017, alongside Mainland amongst other bands.[28][29] In November 2018, the band headlined their second tour, the Panic Vertigo Tour, alongside Badflower and Deal Casino.[30][31]

On account of the COVID-19 pandemic, the band had to abstain from in person performances, instead streaming live concerts throughout late 2020. This included their "Live at the Shag Chateau" concerts in August[32][33], and their "The Nightmare Before Wrecksmas" Halloween concerts in October[34], both featuring Spencer Fort as an official touring member.[35][36]

Artistry

In regards to their band name, Anderson has stated, "Someone just said it one day. Coming up with a band name sucks."[37] In regards to the robot that appears on promotional imagery and merchandise, Anderson has said, "The We Are The Wrecks EP cover features a robot. His name is Otis. He's basically become the band mascot."[38] "The identity of the robot is currently a secret," he says.[39]

The Wrecks draw influence from the likes of the Pixies, the Strokes, Weezer, and Vampire Weekend.[40] The Killers and Cage the Elephant have also been cited.[41] Their music has also been described as "energetic" and "eccentric"[42], as well as "alternative rock"[43] and "pop-punk".[44] It has been noted that the band engages and interacts with the audience during live performances.[45]
