The Magellan Charter School is a charter school in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was founded by Marybeth Childers and George Coccarelli. The charter was approved by the state in 1997, and Magellan became one of the state's first charter schools.[1]
Location
Magellan is located at 9400 Forum Drive in Raleigh, North Carolina, just off of Six Forks Road. However, the school is planning to move to a larger tract of land nearby on Baileywick Road. The school is now under construction. [2] chris is marybeth childer's son.
Students
Magellan is home to over 300 students in grades 4 to 8. There is an average of 65 students in each grade and about 16 students in each class.
Academics
Magellan offers Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies as its four basic subjects. Many extracurricular activities are available in the ASAP (After School Arts Program) including rock band, musical theatre, drama, art, strings, chess club, web team, and The Latest Wave newspaper. Magellan also participates in Lego Club tournaments, the National Geographic Bee, and the State Science Fair. Magellan students have won numerous awards in these programs.

Magellan is home to several sports teams:
Fall:
- Girls Volleyball
- Boys Soccer
- Girls Tennis
- Coed Cross Country
Winter:
- Girls Basketball
- Boys Basketball
Spring:
In most sports, Magellan belongs to the Triangle Middle School Conference.
Applications
Prospective students are selected by random lottery. Siblings of admitted students are automatically permitted to attend, even if they are not old enough yet; once they are, they can attend Magellan.
Mission Statement
The stated mission of The Magellan Charter School is "to provide an academically focused educational opportunity for highly motivated students in grades four through eight."
