Villa Zanelli is an historical building located in Savona, Liguria, Italy.[1] The building is an example of the Liberty style of residential architecture (a variant of Art Nouveau most commonly found in Italy), and was completed in 1907 for the Zanelli family.[2] Designed by the architect Gottardo Gussoni from Turin,[3] it is located along the Tyrrhenian Sea beach in the Legino district of Savona. Numerous attempts to renovate and preserve the building have been made over the years by various regional and municipal administrations.

History and architecture

Located in a large garden adjacent to the sea, the house was built in 1907 by the sea captain Nicolò Zanelli and belonged to the Zanelli family until 1933, when it was sold to the municipality of Milan. After the sale, the municipality transformed the house into a camping site and an international colony. During phases of the Second World War, it was used as a hospital camp; traces of red crosses on the exterior walls are still visible.

In 1967, the structure began to be used by the USL for treating cardiac patients. In 1998, part of the building collapsed, requiring closure of the hospital for safety reasons. Since then, Villa Zanelli has remained in a state of relative neglect.

An architectural analysis of the structure's stylistic elements credits the villa's design to both Gottardo Gussoni and Pietro Fenoglio, two of the most noteworthy architects and engineers of the Italian Liberty style.[4]

Restoration

In 2017, there was a planned restoration of the property led by Dodi Moss. The restoration considered the original paths made through the gardens, as well as the present vegetation, however alterations were made to accommodate increased foot traffic. These alterations were deemed necessary, as it was intended that the villa would be opened to the public as a hotel and museum.[1]
