In November 2006 Steve Tyrer was promoted to train with the St Helens RLFC first team squad

Steve Tyrer has previously played for the St Helens Service Area side coached by Eric Frodsham and was selected to attend the Regional Camp, Regional Bowl, and National Camp but missed out on selection for England. As a result of his performances Mike Rush signed him onto the scholarship scheme at St Helens RLFC.

Steve Tyrer went through to the National Camps last year and as a result was selected to play centre for the England under-16 side in two Tests against France in April of this year. He came off the bench in the 38-0 win at the Halton Stadium and played in the Second Test at Cougar Park, Keighley where they won 28-23 and Tyrer finished up as the top points scorer in that game with a try and seven goals.
