Andrea Marcolongo (born 1987) is an Italian essayist and writer.

Life

Marcolongo was born in Crema in 1987. She has a 3-years degree in Classical Literature at the University of Milan and she also studied storytelling at Scuola Holden founded by Alessandro Baricco who was her partner at that time.

She’s the former ghostwriter for Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi and the Italian Democratic Party. She worked for them for 6 months, between December 2013 and the European elections held on May 2014.[1]

In 2015 she attended a 1-week masterclass at “The Guardian” and also translated from ancient Greek  "Palamede, l'eroe cancellato" that Alessandro Baricco staged in 2016.[2]

After the relationship with Alessandro Baricco ended in 2014[3] she married the blogger Fabio Chiusi[4] who she left in July 2018 by sending him a 50-page letter divided into 10 separate envelopes (as she declared in an interview[5]).

In January 2019 she married in Sarajevo the tattoo artist Zijad Muratovic,[6] the author of her 16 tattoos.[7] They divorced 7 months later.

She currently lives in Paris and she loves practicing meditation on Instagram.[8]

Books

The Ingenious Language

Marcolongo became known for her book La lingua geniale (The Ingenious Language - nine epic reasons to love Greek),[9] which advocates reasons for learning Ancient Greek. It became a bestseller and has been translated into several languages. As of February 2018 the book had sold 200,000 copies. The Guardian said that Marcolongo makes a "convincing case for [Greek's] singularly expressive power" and she shows "us new ways of seeing and understanding the world."[10]

The Hero's Part

Her second book La misura eroica (The Hero's Part) is a narrative essay and draws inspiration from the myth Jason and the Golden Fleece.[11]

Annalena Benini wrote that "Marcolongo went through the Greek language to get to the Greek spirit, to build her cheerfulness".[12]
