The Magellan Charter School is a charter school in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was founded by Marybeth Childers and George Coccarelli. The charter was approved by the state in 1997, and Magellan became one of the state's first charter schools.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
Students
Magellan is home to over 300 students in grades 4 to 8. There is an average of 65 students in each grade and about 16 students in each class.
Academics
Magellan offers Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies as its four basic subjects. Many extracurricular activities are available in the ASAP (After School Arts Program) including rock band, musical theatre, drama, art, strings, chess club, web team, and The Latest Wave newspaper. In most sports, Magellan belongs to the Triangle Middle School Conference.
Applications
Prospective students are selected by random lottery. Siblings of admitted students are automatically permitted to attend, even if they are not old enough yet; once they are, they can attend Magellan.
Mission Statement
The stated mission of The Magellan Charter School is "to provide an academically focused educational opportunity for highly motivated students in grades four through eight."
