Simonz Kunz

ahahha you must really like goldeneye lol. Why did you remove my post. He probably has some Germanic Anglo Saxon heritage. I have English ancestors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.129.229.27 (talk) 09:11, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

I didn't remove your comment: that was another editor.
You do understand this is an encyclopaedia, don't you? What you are trying to do on the Kunz article is what we call WP:SYNTHESIS. If you can find a reliable source that states he has German ancestry, then all will be well and good. If you don't, then you are guilty of original research. - SchroCat (talk) 09:18, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
Ahhahaha ok thanks. Its actually kind of an ocd of mine that I need to find certain ethnicities relating to something like Goldeneye has ourumov which is played by a German and Xenia who is played by a Dutch so I got kind of greedy and I really want to prove that Simon Kunz is also a German because of my obsessive complusive disorder. — Preceding unsigned comment added by an unspecified IP address
You're confusing nationality with ethnicity too. It's particularly important with living individuals - see WP:BRD, which shows just how important citations are in these cases. Actors are also awkward as many take stage names, or variations of their name. To determine their ethnicity from a name is just not right at all without an accurate citation from a reliable source. - SchroCat (talk) 09:36, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

The Spy Who Loved Me

Just noticed that the first section of production and the script could use some strengthening with sources for The Spy Who Loved Me (film) and that it has a tag plastered on it. Can you find some citations?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:12, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Will do, but in a week or so: I'm at a conference in Hong Kong at the moment, so will have a look on my return. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 13:11, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Hey

I'm writing about Moonraker in an essay of mine but I just want to clarify the plot. Drax loans a space craft to the UK, but he steals it back? What nationality is Drax?  — ₳aron 13:54, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Aaron. I'm not at home, near my sources at the moment, but from memory, one of Drax's other shuttles had crashed or was broken, and he needed to steal that one back to undertake his plan. A paper-thin plot, but that wasn't the worst bit of the film! - SchroCat (talk) 14:16, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Okay thanks. I'm talking about Britishness and nationhood, so did it create the feel that the American's felt hostility toward the UK? I've watched the film but want to clarify.  — ₳aron 14:40, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
I've not seen it for a while, so I can't remember the American hostility aspect of it. As with all Bond films, there are a lot of references to Britain, Britishness and nationhood throughout! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 06:58, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
The worst bit of the film was either the double take of the pigeon in Venice, or Jaws waving goodbye to Bond while holding hands with his girlfriend on a spaceship! Any advances on that? Cassiantotalk 21:17, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
The hovercraft gondola? I still wake up in a cold sweat having dreamt about that sometimes.... - SchroCat (talk) 22:44, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

PR Request

Hi Schro, hope all is well. I've got Union Films up at PR here and was wondering if you could be so kind as to review. Any articles coming up? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:57, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Crisco, all very good except for the thunderstorms rocking HK at the moment! Getting very wet dashing between meetings and client receptions, and the cabs all seem to disappear at the first drop of rain! I'll have a little more free time from Thursday onwards, so I'll do what I can then. Hopefully I can finally wrap up Tranby Croft within the next couple of weeks, and then the Barrymore filmog at some point too, but not tot sure when I'll launch then. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 15:06, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I'm all clear on all my other bits (apart from the heavy ce needed on my "own" article, so I'll be able to start on Skelton tomorrow, I hope. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 09:17, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Will try to look at it tomorrow or Tuesday. I'm just wrapping up seeing the final films of Hitchcock and I'll then have seen every film but 2 or 3 or so only since 1929 and every film since 1933!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:39, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Don't look who it is but do you recognize this gorgeous woman?♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:49, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

I recognise the face, but I'm struggling to put a name to her at the moment! - SchroCat (talk) 09:11, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Karin Dor!! I mean she was attractive and sexy as Helga Brandt in YOLT but not insanely beautiful really, it must have been the horrible dyed hair. She looks incredibly beautiful in Topaz as a Latin beauty with dark hair and different makeup. I knew there was something familiar about her but I didn't recognize her! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:20, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Blimey! Wouldn't have guessed that one at all! - SchroCat (talk) 09:22, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

I know! I can see it now in looking at her in the film and the voice but she really looks radically different in it. I recommend watching Topaz when you have a moment. It's a bit slow paced and has several flaws but it's a very good spy thriller and feels quite realistic actually IMO.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:26, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

@Cassianto: Yeah Frenzy's one of Hitchcock's best I think, up there with his greats. Loved it! It also had Anne Massey who was in Peeping Tom in it! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:00, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Indeed. The film had a wonderful score by Ron Goodwin. I can just picture the opening now; flying along the Thames to that wonderful music. Cassiantotalk 22:36, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Hitchcock's weaker films I think in order are Jamaica Inn, Lifeboat, Stage Fright and Torn Curtain but the majority range from rather good to masterpieces. Torn Curtain's second half was good but the first half aside from the kitchen fight was mute and lifeless and I thought both Newman and Andrews especially were totally miscast in the roles. In fact I'd go as far as to say Andrews casting in a spy film is one of the worst casting decisions ever made in film!! Although nnothing compares with the casting of John Wayne as Genghis Khan and as a Roman soldier in The Greatest Story Ever Told, in my top 10 list of the most boring films ever made!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:42, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

Can you keep the peer review open until the end of the week at least? I was going to look at it today but I put a lot of work into Althorp yesterday and don't feel like being on here today!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:20, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, no probs: there's no rush on this one. - SchroCat (talk) 07:35, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

I send this WikiPen to SchroCat in admiration of his staunch defence of good English against the depredations of cultural imperialism – Tim riley talk 16:51, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

You really are very kind, thank you. And thank you for taking the time to look through your library of "grammars" books on grammar (couldn't bring myself to use the Am term - it's just painful!) - SchroCat (talk) 08:20, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Because English originated in England (hence the name!) I don't think it is right to give it a specific nickname ("Queen's English", does she alone speak it?) just to distinguish from other countries' English. Just English looks fine. Kailash29792 (talk) 16:47, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
The use is fine: it's an accepted term that is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "Queen's English n. (usu. with the) the English language regarded as under the guardianship of the Queen of England; (hence) standard or correct English, usually as written and spoken by educated people in Britain". Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 15:13, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

I knew I was going to turn to you sometime. The Times apparently reviewed the synonym of this section here, and it's paywalled. Do you have access? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:55, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

  • Blast, I appear to have given you the wrong link (one was the Sunday Times link). Independent is free access.. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:30, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Yeah - I thought that was probably what you did! You have all the Times has to offer on it, which is always rather slim for non English language films (unless it's French arthouse, in which case they'll go overboard!) - SchroCat (talk) 13:54, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
  • Figures. Oh well, at least I'm getting a good cross section of reviews. Five from the UK, maybe eight from the US, two Canadian, and two Australian. Add... oh, five Japanese reviews, and that's a pretty good sample. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:57, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Peter Sellers

Overly trivial, fair enough. It's not like he was their Man of the Year. Reliable source, though? I would think that in this case going to the primary source would be the obvious choice. --GentlemanGhost (converse) 05:46, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

It would have been if a reference had been added, but simply stating a primary source as part of the text isn't enough: a properly formatted inline citation would also be needed. - SchroCat (talk) 06:01, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
Because that happens so often around here. ;-) But you're right, WP:CITE does advise to provide a citation for all material, controversial or otherwise. Anyway, thank you for the rationale. --GentlemanGhost (converse) 20:01, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Sir William Gordon-Cumming, 4th Baronet you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. The article Sir William Gordon-Cumming, 4th Baronet you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Sir William Gordon-Cumming, 4th Baronet for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. All done, thanks. One thing though, I thought the convention on here was to drop the "Sir" from article titles. Otherwise we'd have Sir Sean Connery etc! Or is it permitted for those who have titles like baronet etc?♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:01, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

I don't think so: the Sir is not from a knighthood, but part of the title for a baronetcy. I don't know if it makes a difference on Wiki.... Many thanks for the review: much appreciated! Cheers. - SchroCat (talk) 11:38, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Althorp

All done I believe, thanks for taking the time to do an excellent review. BTW have you seen Woman of Straw? I've never seen a film actress look quite so simultaneously frightened and attracted as she was with Sean Connery. You could tell Lollobrigida was highly attracted to him but she genuinely looked really intimidated by him!! Either that or she hated him! Probably not used to being around a male film star of such toughness and virility! Connery was the man wasn't he! I wouldn't mind her being my nurse though LOL! I don't think they liked each other as people though, I've found a source which says she was difficult on set and clashed with Connery and Dearden. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:51, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

A definite diva there, I think! Don't think I've seen WoS - I'll add it to my "must watch" list! - SchroCat (talk) 17:04, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

It's pretty average overall, but it's enjoyable seeing Ralph as a dead man in a wheelchair and Gina being locked in a prison and the ending is great with a cunning twist! She was hot but my didn't she know it. Textbook diva as you say. There's a scene it it when she's wailing, really overacting and Connery really looks an inch away from slapping her. But if you compare the chemistry between Connery and Lollo and Peter Sellers and Sophia in The Millionairess for instance they couldn't have been more different! How Connery managed to do that and Marnie amid the early Bond films and the huge pressures it must have brought beats me. Perhaps that was his way of dealing with the attention to go to Majorca and shoot a film and focus his mind on something else.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:57, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

I still think The Hill and The Offence are his best works from that time: sheer class performances, and I think a surprise to people who thought he was a muscle-bound Bond and nothing else. - SchroCat (talk) 19:02, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Lumet was a master filmmaker though, it did help!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:05, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Formby 1 and 2

I just read both of your articles, very interesting indeed, and the writing is very strong. I am afraid neither Formby made a huge impact on my native side of the Atlantic (well, I can't very well say "this side of the Atlantic", now can I?) and I had only heard the name and little more.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:54, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

They both show a particularly British (even north west English) type of character, and Formby Jnr's films are an absolute delight in themselves, as well as having an almost sociological interest to them. One of them, Let George Do It! gave a particularly strong boost to early-war British morale (according to the Mass-Observation work) as Formby drops in on Hitler and gives him a right hook in a dream sequence. When you're back in free wi-fi land, try Bell-Bottom George on YouTube - the full film is there and it's worth 90 of anyone's time! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 08:32, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Representation of James Bond during London Olympics

I see that I did not need to add the description it was already further down the page. It still does not look right before or after.I am now trying to determine what change I should have made instead.RichardBond (talk) 14:40, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Probably none: much more would be superfluous fluff for what was a small 5-minute promotional film, and all that needs to be said is already said in the section. - SchroCat (talk) 14:44, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

If you look upward on the page there is a shorter explanation of the circumstance under which the Danjaq Eon group was obligated permitted use of the character by a different production. Having the producer followed by blank space does not follow formatRichardBond (talk) 16:08, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Apart from the fact that there was actually something to say abut the previous owners, it wasn't information that was mindlessly put in there and then repeated in subsequent sections; it was also reliably sourced. There is no problem with not following the previous formatting, if it's ridiculous to do so, which it is in this very, very small section. - SchroCat (talk) 16:13, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to John Barrymore on stage, screen and radio may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. In the course of a few hours, you reverted the IP's suggested word change four times. Both you and the IP kept saying to discuss it on the talk page, but neither of you took the effort to do so (or seemed willing). The changed wording wasn't unambiguous vandalism. -- Lord Roem ~ (talk) 16:02, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

It may also be worth posting onto the FLC talk page to see if someone else is able to pick it up in the meantime. Cheers. - SchroCat (talk) 18:03, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

FLC closing

Does Legobot usually take a week to close an FLC once it's been promoted? I feel like this is a little longer than usual, but I'm pretty new to the FL scene. Corvoe (speak to me) 17:58, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed

Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.

It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitz@gmail.com. Thanks and cheers, Jake Ocaasi via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:41, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello, SchroCat. You have new messages at CambridgeBayWeather's talk page.
Message added 12:50, 21 June 2014 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
I will unprotect the page. If there is any more edit warring then the editors involved will be blocked. CBWeather, Talk, Seal meat for supper? 13:14, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
To clarify a bit. What I meant was edit warring from the unprotection, taking the unprotection to be a clean start. CBWeather, Talk, Seal meat for supper? 13:37, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Baccarat

Sorry I missed the FAC and congrats on a fine article making FA. I read the article and thought it worthy of FA status. I was wondering if File:RoyalBaccaratScandal.jpg was reproduced in any of the books on the scandal? If so, it might have enough source information there to be able to use it in the article.

I also was not sure how the Prince testifying in the divorce case in 1869 was different from his testifying in this 1891 trial (how was he not "compelled to testify" in the earlier trial?) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:08, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Ruhrfisch, Thanks for the message. I'm on holiday, so need to get back to my sources next week to look at the information and see if he here is something that will help. (And check elsewhere to see if it was published somewhere previously). I think it's almost certainly free to use, but I need to clarify and confirm a couple of points to pass muster - which I hope to be able to do soon. In relation to the testifying, I think I'll need to clarify the 1869 appearance: he appeared (vaguely voluntarily), and read a pre-prepared statement rather than being examined and cross-examined in open court. Again, I'll have to do that in a few days time when I'm back with my books. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 15:18, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Hi SchroCat - the only other thing I thought of was noting what the authors of the factual books and fictional accounts thought of Gordon-Cumming - did they think he cheated or not? Sorry about the block. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 17:09, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
They sit on the fence a bit, saying that he may have been guilty, but that the judge behaved disgracefully with his speech. I'll have a hunt round and see if I can add a line or two somewhere to that effect. The block's a minor pain: I'm not too busy on much (indeed I'm on holiday at the moment), but it still rankles slightly — still, my fault for my actions, so hey ho! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 18:24, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for the thanks! It is nice to be noticed and appreciated. Sorry about your block, looks like a—— well, you know what I mean. Have a nice weekend! Laura1822 (talk) 19:30, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

@Laura1822:, My pleasure! Their venerable titles are only a minor point, but certainly one to get right! I see you have an interest in history, the peerage and royalty, well you may be interested in reading about the royal baccarat scandal, a newly-promoted FA. A very English affair, and a riveting story. Shame about the block, but it's only until tomorrow, and gives me a chance to do some background reading on something else! Cheers. - SchroCat (talk) 21:05, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Crete

Crete in June??? That's a recipe for one roasted cat!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:09, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Too bloody hot here—and the temperatures are rising to 35 later in the week! However, the beer is cold....! - SchroCat (talk) 06:49, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
You're lucky it's not nearer 40. I went to Turkey in August once and on one day the bus thermometer said it was 45 when we stopped on a mountainside in the sun!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:11, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
That's hot. I spent a year and a bit in Brazil at one stage - very hot there too, and used to dip into the 40s from time to time, but I just can't take the heat like I used to! - SchroCat (talk) 08:51, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
In New York at the moment it is in the 30s. Far too bloody hot and stuffy. Roll on 22nd! Lads holiday to Ibiza in 1998 was the hottest holiday for me; 38 degrees!!! Cassiantotalk 21:33, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
  • Y'all complainin' about temperature? You should see my sunburned hands after driving a motorcycle for seven hours in Indonesian dry season weather (probably 35 to 37 yesterday). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:16, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

FA congratulations

Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Royal baccarat scandal to FA status recently. I know you know all about WP:TFAR (specific and non-specific date slots) and the "pending" list, so this is just a reminder to use them as and when suits you. Many thanks. BencherliteTalk 18:24, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

@Bencherlite: Many thanks for your note: I certainly will be putting this forward shortly, approaching the new nomination system with some trepidation! It'll be an open date, with no compelling reason to block a date slit up for others. Cheers! - SchroCat (talk) 18:31, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Adding my congratulations. & also a note that SS Arctic disaster has now surfaced at WP:FAC, and may need a little attention there. I realise you're on holiday, and that it may have to wait, but please take a look when you can. Brianboulton (talk) 18:08, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
Twill be my pleasure. I fly back late tomorrow, and I expect a busy desk awaits me, but I'll be there as soon as I can. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 18:43, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

DYK hook

I'm sorry to have inadvertently upset you, but as I had an objection of my own to the hook in question I had a choice between either pulling the hook for further discussion or tweaking it myself. Because I found the issue after a long session at DYK and was feeling tired, I opted for the easier solution. If I hadn't come across this issue at the end of a long session, I think your objection stated at the nom page would have registered more strongly, but in my haste to wind up the set and log off, I overlooked it. I apologize for that.

If you still want to discuss the issue, I'm happy to do so, but I'm really too tired to tackle it right now, so I think it would have to wait until tomorrow. Gatoclass (talk) 15:53, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the apology: I am grateful for you stopping by to explain. To be honest I'm not sure that I wish to discuss this anymore, tomorrow, or at any other time. Yours was the last in a string of events that have taken up too much time, energy and willpower to face, simply for getting a string of 20 or so words onto the front page. In Yoninah's accurate phrase, this has been "wreaking havoc", not just in bits of DYK, but in my limited Wiki-time too. Life really is too short for me to start going over this all again, and the bottom line is that the nomination has now been pulled in its entirety and it need create no further distubance or grief to anyone else. Thanks again for your comment here. - SchroCat (talk) 16:13, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

WW2 Info Box

Calling my actions dubious when you look at yours makes you a bit of hypocrite. However I have read your point and although I have already discussed this issue on WW2 talk page before , I have started yet another new section WW2 Info Box talk. Go see it and then I can restore the page to what it should be.

Thank you

WARNER one — Preceding unsigned comment added by WARNER one (talkcontribs) 15:13, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Reverting the box back to the agreed consensus version against the unbalanced POV of one editor does not make me a hypocrite. I have read what you have written on the talk page and left an appropriate comment. All I can say if that you need to read more about this and learn some basics about the war and the roles of the participants: what you wrote there was largely misguided nonsense. - SchroCat (talk) 15:18, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

WW1 info box

Your edit warring! Not me. I'm trying to add accurate information (that if you talked to me I could explain) and you are removing it without valid reason. I take it you either don't like Britain and Former British Empire or you just don't like me. I don't see you presenting any evidence why France should go first (I am not saying they did not contribute). They did not overall participate in as many stages of the battle. I don't want to edit war even though you do. Message me. Read my reasons. Research. And then stop this pointless reverting that is not fact based. WARNER one -9999 (talk) 15:24, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

@WARNER one:, you need to read WP:BRD and actually understand what edit warring is. These two Bold edits were Reverted by Calidum. You should have Discussed, not edit warred to your preferred version. I put the box back to the stable consensus, nothing more. I see you have opened a talk thread, although I think you'll need to need to come up with better arguments than the rahter laughable (and grammatically painful "British Empire done more than France and rescued France from invasion". You obviously have no perspective on the war, aside from a rather narrow nationalistic one. Have you perhaps thought that French were at war longer than us, held a larger chunk of the line than us, lost more men and civilians than us, had more of the war fought on their land than us and held more overall control of the allied forces than us? As soon as you look at things a little more broadly (and I do advise you read more widely on the subject) then you'll see things are not as simplistic as you suppose. This encyclopaedia is about sharing information and learning, not pushing half-baked, misleading, misguided, unbalanced or narrow points of view on others. - SchroCat (talk) 15:58, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Gale contemporary authors

Now here's a funny thing! When I click on the link at ref 8 in List of works by Leslie Charteris it opens the Gale page straight away, without password or front page or any such stuff, even though it's supposed to be a subscription site. I'd be interested to know if any of your stalkers find the same when they click on it. I might have to rethink how I cite the Gale website in my own draft articles. Nationality in the lead

Hi Schro, I was wondering if you could take a look at Talk:Naomi Watts#Watts is Australian and British, what's with the conflict?. I've had a to revert a couple of times on the article but to be honest I'm not 100 percent sure if my views on this are consistent with how Wikipedia approaches nationality i.e. do we treat it as a fact, a self-identification matter etc? I don't do much work on bios so I'm disengaging on the article itself since I'm not all that ivested in it and I'm not even sure if I am "right", but I would be interested in knowing what you think for future reference. Betty Logan (talk) 15:00, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Done. I think you were right in your instincts there: too many people play petty nationalistic games with which I have little time. Reliable sources, truth and common sense all tend to be overlooked just to put seemingly meaningless labels on things. All rather tedious, and I don't think it's ever possible to reason with them properly, but just keep replying on the policies and guidelines, which are normally pretty good on this stuff. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 16:09, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Apology / Need for discussion

I get that some of what I said was misguided and I thank you for your replies, However I do think you could of replied in a bit of a nicer instead of calling me an embarrassment.Though I do think the order of countries needs to be revised. USA should not be before UK. It just shouldn't. Soviet Union is a bit more debatable. Caldium said that America lead the war effort when in the long term they quite clearly did not. Please reply to me on my talk page so we can talk possibly as friends. And on WW1 I was not just saying United Kingdom I was editing British Empire which overall did contribute (I know you are not a fan of that word) more. Thank you. WARNER one --9999 (talk) 14:13, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Read again, WARNER one. I didn't call you an embarrassment: I called your comments an embarrassment (as much as Caldium's are about the US's role too). - SchroCat (talk) 15:26, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Tracking?

I thank you for your recent edit on "The Trench". However I find it alarming you only change the page that had excluded France for years, when I make an edit that removed Ireland. This makes me naturally assume you are following my edits. If you continue to act is this extremely alarming way, I will look in to it further. Just because I have made edits that you disagree with in the past, does not give you the right to "spy" on me. Use your BFI knowledge (a tool of I have campaigned for in the past), just don't wait for me to edit a page before you pounce. This may (though I doubt it) be a coincidence, if so then please continue. --WARNER one (talk) 17:10, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Next time, do it properly and get the information right and I won't have to re-edit your constant cock-ups. - SchroCat (talk) 17:21, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Yeah because you totally don't wrongly label the highest grossing film in the UK based on no good reason, or stubbornly act without reading in to policies on Wikipedia film, or follow peoples edits without reason, or generally act like a bit of a --WARNER one (talk) 20:47, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
WARNER one, I have labelled nothing incorrectly, and I have acted within policy, as always. You have not. You have deliberately introduced errors into articles, based on narrow and petty nationalistic grounds, which is inappropriate and against policy. You need to visit WP:CIVIL and appreciate that it is one of our core policies. I will now ask you not to post again on this talk page, unless it is to acknowledge that you are over-stepping a line in civility. If you post without such an acknowledgement, it will be deleted, as will all future posts. This is the third time I have asked you to de-personalise your interaction with others and focus on the issues in hand, not on your opinions of other editors. - SchroCat (talk) 09:28, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

"no hyphen should be so abused as this"

Thanks for your help

Just a word of appreciation for your help in trying to solve the problems itemised on my talkpage (Village Pump was completely useless). I'm glad to say I've found ways of recovering nearly all the features that went missing. The one I can't find is the very useful "Page size" (wordcount) tool that used to lie in the list of tools on the left of the page. I remember losing this once before, and someone showed me the procedure for getting it back. Unfortunately, that's lost somewhere in my 80+ archives. If you can tell me what the procedure is, I'd be very grateful. Otherwise, it's a long, long search through the archives. All good wishes, Brianboulton (talk) 11:13, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

@Brianboulton:, No problems, and I'm sorry I couldn't actually give you any useful or helpful advice! I may be able to assist on the page size matter, however. The installation etc details can be found here, while the coding to be used is here. I hope this helps! All the best – SchroCat (talk) 11:21, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
All nicely done and dusted - page size is back. Mant thanks, and have a metaphorically glass of bubbly on me! Brianboulton (talk) 13:00, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Earlier I changed the phrase "different to" in this article to "different from". I notice that you have reverted this change. However, the use of "to" in this context is non-standard in both UK and North American English, while the use of "from" is standard. You can check this here. Further, "different from" is also internationally understood, and in keeping with our policy, you'll see that "opportunities for commonality" are encouraged, and I made the change in this spirit. I therefore feel that it would be appropriate to return the text to "different from". If you feel uncomfortable with this, please let me know. Thank you. RomanSpa (talk) 17:12, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

I certainly wouldn't use a Wiki article to back up any argument of mine. I'd use a style guide, such as Gowers's The Complete Plain Words, which states that "there is good authority for different to", or Fowler's A Dictionary of Modern English Usage, which also supports the acceptable use of different to in this circumstance.
The COMMONPLACE guideline (not policy) used to suggest "Fixed Wing Aircraft" in place of aeroplane/airplane, which is one of the most cretinous things I've ever seen. I see the guideline, I nod to it when necessary, but I will not debase articles to some mid-Atlantic sludge simply to pander to some "international" dimension: the article is written in British English, and it's not worth trying to force unwarranted Engvar changes on it. – SchroCat (talk) 18:27, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
I feel the problem with the references you cite is that they, by their nature, only focus on a national variant of the language. I'll leave it for the moment, as I'll need to check the exact wording in Gowers and in Fowler, though, and I don't have them to hand. Thanks for your prompt reply. RomanSpa (talk) 18:36, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
They "only focus on a national variant of the language"? Of course they do: they are British English style guides. But as the article is in British English, that is entirely appropriate. There are bigger and better things of concern with Wikipedia than chnaging something that is correct just for the sake of it. Mountains and molehills beware. - SchroCat (talk) 18:42, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
I believe I've already indicated that I don't intend to take any action for now, but I would remind you that our policy on commonality encourages us to use forms that are of widest application. As you say, though, this is a molehill rather than a mountain. RomanSpa (talk) 18:50, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
I've also pointed out that COMMONPLACE is not a policy: it is a guideline only, and can lead to a mid-Atlantic sludge of English, being neither fish nor fowl, which is hardly an ideal outcome. - SchroCat (talk) 18:57, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Apropos the exchange about "different", above, both "to" and "from" are fine, me judice, but we Britons are apt to sniff at the American "different than", and our sniffing would be very well were it not that "different than" was used by among others, Coleridge, Southey, Defoe, Goldsmith, Carlyle, Thackeray and Newman. Ahem! But I digress, and I return to my reason for clocking in here, viz to add my applause for the FL promotion. Tim riley talk 20:13, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Sanchez

Just out of interest, what was wrong with the Sanchez/Sinatra info? Your edit reason wasn't clear. I'm fairly new so I'm not questioning your judgement, just asking for an explanation so I can do better next time. Thanks.

(Also, I have no idea how to add my name to the end of this post and would appreciate being shown - thanks again. Bumbaze.)

Hi Bumbaze, Although the Sinatra info was of passing interest, it's something that should be on Davi's page, not the Licence to Kill page: it's not relevant to LtK, but it is to Davi, and we try and keep just the key information on article pages or they become overly bloated and messy, filled with things that aren't strictly relevant. In terms of your signature, you need to add four tildes (~~~~) to the end to generate your signature. In the Wiki markup directly below the editing are, you'll see that it is one of the pre-made pieces of code to drop in. Hope both explanations help. Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America

Hi SchroCat,

I noticed that you reverted my edit at TFLS. I removed the definite article because the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America article does not use it; the lead starts without "The", and is fairly consistent in omitting it throughout the rest of the article. This source omits it as well ("I never should have joined SFWA if..."), as does the official website ("SFWA is a professional organization..."). Would you mind if I removed the definite article from the TFL blurb again?

Neelix (talk) 19:20, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

If you must, but it's bloody painful to read. Have Americans completely eschewed the definite article nowadays? (BTW, The Guardian link you have linked to, has, in it's first paragraph, "much-criticised recent editions of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America's (SFWA) magazine"). Your call and I'll not revert if you do it, but I will disagree with it. – SchroCat (talk) 20:31, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your understanding. Considering that it is an American award, I think the American grammar that is officially used should apply. Neelix (talk) 14:48, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
It's not necessarily American grammer: AmEng had not totally abandoned the use of the definite article, and I do not consider this to be an improvement. - SchroCat (talk) 14:54, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Peer review

Hello SchroCat! I'll be glad if you're available to give your feedback on Wikipedia:Peer review/Shahid Nadeem/archive1, thanks. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 19:29, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Will do, and it may take a few days, but I'll get to it. Cheers. - SchroCat (talk) 20:33, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll be waiting...just ping me then. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:26, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Hey SchroCat! I wanted to let you know the NC-17 rating is changed my friends and I went to see blue is the warmest color and on the rating it said NC-17 Adults only on the top of the rating. heres the link to the youtube site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2OLRrocn3s and you will see im not trying to do vandalism.

On cables and PS4, Xbox one the pg age limit is 7. but if you want to keep that way just say so. Hope you see it. when in the site wait for the rating to appear and see the NC-17 rating on top and you will see it says adults only and the MPAA made it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.246.139.135 (talk) 17:53, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for today's, precious again, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:39, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Renominations

Does FLC have a minimum waiting period like FAC does? Is there a suggested wait period, because otherwise I intend to just renominate List of Interstate Highways in Michigan as soon as practical since there were no unaddressed comments in the last nomination. Imzadi 1979  08:22, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi Imzadi1979, With no issues on the review, I would have no objection if you re-nominated now and left a neutrally worded message on the talk pages of all those who commented previously. I hope to see it back there soon, and with a little more action this time! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 08:26, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. Everyone has been notified, and the new nomination is open. Imzadi 1979  08:40, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Royal baccarat scandal...

...just to say that I really enjoyed reading the article today. Great work! Hchc2009 (talk) 08:50, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Many thanks—it's a largely forgotten or unknown footnote of history, but an interesting one, I think! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 09:00, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Indeed, great to see it as TFA!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:30, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
