    Ref number 6 is in red - please fix if able. thanks 2405:6E00:2EF2:BC00:759C:8E0B:D81D:6D1C (talk) 02:01, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

     Done, added the missing year in accessdate. Cmr08 (talk) 03:04, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Number 9 is all wrong - sorry - please leave in quote Thank you as always. 175.38.42.62 (talk) 03:16, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

     Done, I never touched a quote, just added the missing year in accessdate. Cmr08 (talk) 03:18, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Could the newly added file of house in snow be made a little bigger please? Thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 04:44, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

     Done. But have you considered that instead we could crop the picture, so as to portray the house larger and with less snow? Maproom (talk) 06:50, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    The new snow file added today is all wrong - I cannot get a caption underneath it. It should read: Long lived at Severn Bank, Severn Stoke, Worcester.

    Thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 07:47, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    You are flooding this page with requests for help for every change you wish to make. I might suggest that you use the article talk page to make edit requests instead of coming here. 331dot (talk) 07:57, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Or, at least please keep your requests under a single header. 331dot (talk) 07:58, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    For a page ostensibly about one Charles Wigram Long, a remarkable percentage is devoted to this or that Lupton. Please see and feel free to comment on Talk:Charles Wigram Long#The ubiquitous Luptons. -- Hoary (talk) 08:36, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    There's more Lupton (and Middleton) -cruft added just today to yet another article. Very strange. -- Hoary (talk) 10:11, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    I have rearranged these questions. As 331dot has just said above (and as I have said earlier) please do not recycle headers. -- Hoary (talk) 08:45, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Correcting birthdate

    My name is Christopher Britton actor. The birthdate on my Wiki page is incorrect. I would like to correct that mistake. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Britton_(actor) I would also like to upload a recent photo. Dennis Vine (talk) 02:30, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    The birthdate was added in this edit on July 28, 2023. I have reverted the edit as it was unsourced. Cmr08 (talk) 03:10, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Dennis Vine: To add a new image, first acquire an image to which you own the copyright. The copyright of an image belongs to the photographer until the photographer explicitly conveys it in writing, so the best way to do this is to take a selfie. After you have the image on your computer, proceed to Wikipedia:File upload wizard. -Arch dude (talk) 04:22, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Dennis Vine: you may add your birthdate to the article, but only if you can cite a reliable published source. -Arch dude (talk) 04:25, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Dennis Vine: Hi there! Christopher Britton (actor) is not your Wiki page, but a Wikipedia article about you, and editing it could be considered a conflict of interest. Instead of editing it, you may post your requests on the article's talk page Talk:Christopher Britton (actor) or use the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 20:46, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Reference number 133 has red ink in it and I cannot work out what in fact I have failed to do. please alter so that the red ink goes and please leave in quote. With thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 05:42, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Please note - reference 133 is still all wrong (in red) please fix and leave in quote. thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 07:41, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

     Done. You had given the access date as August 19 2033. You meant 2023. Maproom (talk) 07:44, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Connected templates

    In the article stub about Cytherellidae the template says it belongs to the order Platycopida, which is correct. And the template in the article stub about Punciidae says that too belongs to the order Platycopida, which is wrong. It belongs to the order Palaeocopida. But when I change the info in the template to correct it, the template describing Cytherellidae changes too, from Platycopida to Palaeocopida. And vice versa. The two templates are connected, so when you edit it in one of the mentioned articles, the same thing happens in the other. Is there a way to separate the templates? Hipporoo (talk) 07:56, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    The taxoboxes used in the two articles are automatically populated from Wikidata. I suspect that this means that there is an error in the wikidata items, though I confess I can't see what. d:Q11847357, the Wikidata entry for Punciidae, says its parent taxon is Punciodiea, not Platycopida, so I don't know where the wrong information is coming from.
    I suggest asking at Template talk:taxobox. ColinFine (talk) 09:52, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    The reference 1 in Draft:HD 85628 Ab is partly red. How do I solve this? (talk) 07:56, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    It's because you had a space in your URL. Now fixed. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 09:25, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi, I saw there is an image showing a mobile screen with a bot translating from one to another. It is listed in the paragraph "Automatic editing" by an Arabic author, maybe. 113.185.106.84 (talk) 09:20, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Filesize calculation template

    Does anyone know if a template for converting data filesize formats exist?

    I.E.: a template like {{convert}} that could convert a filesize like 2000 bytes into 2.000 kilobytes; so on and so forth.

    macbrew 09:23, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    @Macbrew I think that {{Val}} can handle bytes. See Module:Val/units. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:22, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    I guess I could technically convert a filesize string into an exponentiation representation using {{val}}.
    • Syntax: {{val|2000|e=3}}
    • Output: 2000×103 (This would equate to 2 megabytes or 2,000,000 bytes)
    This isn't exactly what I'm looking for however. macbrew 12:06, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Michael D. Turnbull: File sizes are a mess, because they are sometimes in actual decimal powers and sometimes in "binary" powers (see Byte#Multiple-byte_units. Is this what you are referring to? My opinion: stick with decimal unless you are certain the source means binary powers. -Arch dude (talk) 15:33, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Macbrew I think that ping was meant for you... Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:38, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    I suppose this means that there isn't a template created specifically to convert file size formats then? macbrew 01:23, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    About a year ago, bits and bytes were added to the {{Convert}} template, but after this discussion a few months ago they were removed because of several possibilities for confusion. Perhaps @Johnuniq can comment further. CodeTalker (talk) 01:55, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    As shown in the discussion linked by CodeTalker above, it was felt that a conversion for bits/bytes would not be satisfactory due to the confusion over kilo being 1000 or 1024 and the lack of a need. In some historical contexts probably covered in articles, a byte was not 8 bits. If there were a need for a file size conversion, I would recommend asking for a dedicated template perhaps at Wikipedia:Requested templates. Johnuniq (talk) 04:06, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    What is this link? And how to access it directly?

    In the Wikipedia article, I saw an image with a bot and the Arabic language was being translated. The image is in the paragraph naming "Automatic editing" included in the category "Operation". I truly want to upload a new, stable version of it (make the content in English). And here is the link to access: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_translation_Screenshot_%DB%B2%DB%B0%DB%B2%DB%B3%DB%B0%DB%B6%DB%B1%DB%B5-%DB%B2%DB%B0%DB%B5%DB%B9%DB%B2%DB%B3_Brave.jpg. Thank you so much if anyone going to support me! User:GreatPersonLikeMe 10:31, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    @GreatPersonLikeMe That image is in an article about Wikipedia at Wikipedia#Automated editing. The file itself is stored on Commons at the this link: File:Wiki translation Screenshot_۲۰۲۳۰۶۱۵-۲۰۵۹۲۳_Brave.jpg. I'm not sure why you would want to upload a new version but that is best done on Commons, perhaps after consulting with the editor who uploaded the original. Please read c:Commons:Overwriting existing files for the guidance on overwriting files. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:10, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Michael D. TurnbullNo. Just want to know how to access the Wikipedia's bot of translation. Keep determined to attach with https:// encryption first. Thanks User:GreatPersonLikeMe 11:18, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Remember to attach the link directing to the English version only. Your sincerely, User:GreatPersonLikeMe 11:21, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    The tool is explained at WP:CXT. The English Wikipedia does not allow its use to create article drafts here, although some other-language versions do allow it to be used to translate from English. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:28, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Where to move an article?

    As an IP I can't do the move myself but I'm not sure where it would go in the first place. A couple of days ago I discovered an ELEVEN YEAR old article with the ABSURD title Violet Cripps, Baroness Parmoor (a title the subject never was known by or entitled to)...I don't know if it might be a "copyright trap" or something.

    To recap:

    • The lady in question (1891-1983) was born Violet Nelson.
    • in her first marriage she was Mrs. Rowley.
    • in her second (her basic claim to notability...the wife of an extraordinarily rich/famous/prominent man) she was The Duchess of Westminster as second wife of the 2nd Duke of Westminster ("Bend Or") from 1920 to 1926.(This was the only time in her life she was "a peeress" as identified in the lede).
    • Divorce made her Violet, Duchess of Westminster....retaining the surname Grosvenor.
    • In 1927 she remarried The Hon. Frederick Heyworth Cripps DSO and thus became The Hon. Mrs. Frederick Cripps.
    • In 1951 she divorced and never married again though I have dim memories of a Debrett's Peerage from her last years including her on a list of former wives of former Dukes as her former style of "Violet, Duchess of Westminster" despite there being a later Duchess named Viola.
    • In March 1977 the man she had divorced over a quarter-century before succeeded his 94-year-old brother as 3rd Baron Parmoor and he then died that October and was succeeded by their son Milo.
    • Neither of these successions should have changed the ex-wife's title...Marjorie Pratt, Countess of Brecknock (1900-1989) divorced the then courtesy Earl of Brecknock in 1941 and remained Marjorie Countess of Brecknock for the rest of her life(that is how she was in Who's Who, that is how she is remembered) without her ex-husband's becoming Marquess Camden in 1943 or their son's succeeding him in 1983 making her Marchioness Camden.

    So...the article title is wrong. But should it simply lose "Baroness Parmoor" (with the repetitions of "Lady Parmoor" in the text dropped as well) and be "Violet Cripps", or change to the more prominent past title where you get Google hits on her, or what? 108.29.145.226 (talk) 15:11, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    IP editor. If you can back up your bullet points with citations to reliable published sources, please go ahead and edit the article: currently it is in a very poor state. Its title can be changed later, once it is properly sourced. Note that Wikipedia considers Who's Who an unreliable source. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:58, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    I went ahead and removed errors and added citations to Burke's Peerage...and voted for deletion.108.29.145.226 (talk) 18:32, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Normally, I would check the sources cited in the article to see how they refer to her. But there aren't any. Maproom (talk) 17:00, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Note that we generally abide by Wikipedia:Common names whereby an article is titled with the name the subject is now most widely known by/referred to, even if it's not accurate. For example, most people refer to Ada Lovelace and so we title her article thus, even though that was never her actual name. The same might be the case here. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.198.140.169 (talk) 18:09, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    The alleged absurdity of its title aside, this article provides no evidence for the notability of its subject. Perhaps Surtsicna, its creator, would care to add such evidence. (Without it, the article seems ripe for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion.) -- Hoary (talk) 21:33, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Honestly, I do not know what I was thinking. This ought to be nuked. Surtsicna (talk) 21:45, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Typing a password

    Please enable us to see what user name we are typing and what password we are typing, in case we inadvertently make a mistake. I got a new computer and had to pay an expert quite a lot of money on the next day, to clear my password information back to Factory Settings, 100 per cent because I could not check what I had typed in. Vikingicemaiden (talk) 18:02, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    @Vikingicemaiden On websites where there is no facility to view your password, the easiest thing to do if you are in doubt is to use a simple text editor to create the correct password in visible text and then copy/paste it into the password box. Only a few websites (not including Wikipedia) won't allow the copy/paste. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:52, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Wiki citations

    Hi. I've only recently come across this problem while editing articles - some citations don't appear in order, for example: there will be a reference marked as [5] but the one that comes after might be [16]. It's a small thing but I'd like to know how to fix that, so I can make them all appear in chronological order.

    Thanks for your help.

    ~~~~ Usernameisoccupiedtoo (talk) 18:35, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    This may not be an error- it is possible to format references so that an early one can be used later in the article, it will have the same number as its first appearance in the article. 331dot (talk) 18:38, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Usernameisoccupiedtoo It is the software that numbers and renumbers the references, not editors. References are always numbered from top to bottom through the text of the article BUT an early reference (say #5 from the top) may be re-used again later using named references. Hence the #5 could appear later close to #16. There is nothing for you to "fix". Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:47, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Saying that they "were OK but now are in the red" is an oddly bland way of describing what happened. They turned red as the result of one or more edits within this set of edits that you made. There's a pattern: you screw up the syntax; you ask somebody, anybody, to fix the mistake. Unaccompanied by a question about how you could fix the syntax, or any sign that you intend to avoid such mistakes in the future. Does this seem right to you? -- Hoary (talk) 06:30, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Alert notification
    I received an alert notification that said "Your edit on Claim to Fame (TV series) was reverted."
    Funny thing is, the only edit I have made on that page was a minor one to the format which has NOT been reverted.
    When I click on the alert, it shows that the edit was made by Special:Contributions/2600:6C50:5300:BE8:9D74:3560:DBD7:7998.
    Can anybody explain why I have received this notification? Ozzieboy (talk) 04:36, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Ozzieboy: The notification means that somebody reverted the page to a state it had at some time before your edit. It doesn't imply they clicked undo on your specific edit. The page history [1] shows that after an edit by 2600:6C50:5300:BE8:9D74:3560:DBD7:7998, Magitroopa reverted to the revision before your edit. If an edit is tagged "Reverted" in the page history then it means the current revision is identical to a revision some time before the edit. Confusingly this means the tag can both appear and disappear depending on the latest edit. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:33, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks. Ozzieboy (talk) 10:29, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Wait, what? I thought the tag got attached to the edit if any later edit reverted to a previous version, yes, but then it stayed there forever (or until manually removed, which I seem to recall admins and maybe bots can do but haven't ever looked into). —Cryptic 20:18, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Image Policies - HELP
    Help! I am editing Wikipedia pages in English, French, German, and Spanish for German soprano Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976). The pictures in the Infobox are not representative or flattering, and I would like to replace them. I have looked at the Wikimedia Commons page for her, and there are no images that are suitable. I have access to many images of her, taken from articles, books, and scanned from the large collection of personal photos she donated to UC Santa Barbara in the 1970's. In most cases the photographer and date is not listed. Even so, if the photographer was 20 years old and took a photo of her in 1925, the photographer would be 98 now. What can I do to add new images of her to Wikimedia Commons that can be used by the English, French, German, and Spanish Wikipedia pages? Thank you for any help. I have tried really hard to understand the licensing policies but they are confusing and difficult. SP-lava (talk) 00:09, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello, SP-lava. Any photo first published over 95 years ago is almost certainly in the public domain because copyright has expired. It is therefore eligible to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, where it can be used on any Wikimedia project (or anywhere else) without any permission being required. It is an annual process, so anything published in 1927 or before is in the public domain throughout 2023. On January 1, 2024, the 1928 items become public domain, including Mickey Mouse. Cullen328 (talk) 00:20, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you @Cullen328for your response. Does this mean if I can prove a date (such as a performance from 1920), but don't have a photographer name, I can upload the image? I started to do this for Wikimedia Commons, but there was so much information I needed to provide when adding, much of which I didn't have, that in the end the image failed to be approved. SP-lava (talk) 00:29, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    SP-lava, if you can establish that a photo was first published in or before 1927, then there is no need to identify the photographer. If you know who the photographer was, then that is useful information to add, but not necessary. Cullen328 (talk) 00:45, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Got it. Thanks @Cullen328 SP-lava (talk) 17:25, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    SP-lava, Italian copyright law is considerably less annoying than are the copyright laws of most countries. See the template affixed to this photo from 1973, as an example. In your position, I'd be looking for Italian photos of Lehmann. However, if you have any further questions related to this, you should ask them at Commons, not here. -- Hoary (talk) 04:53, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Sourcing & notability for draft
    I'm working on a draft article & have a few questions - I submitted it for review through AfC (I'm autoconfirmed and know how to move to mainspace, but since it's my first article I wanted to be sure I was getting everything right) & was declined for sourcing and notability.
    I see the issues w sourcing - I used several self-published sources as sources on themselves, but some of them were admittedly stretching the guidelines a bit. I took out the ones that I think were problematic; I've kept two self-published sources in the draft (references 11 & 15), and I'd really appreciate it if someone could take a look and let me know if those two are acceptable as sources on herself.
    As far as notability goes, I'm a little confused - I asked the reviewer for clarification, but haven't gotten a response, so I'd also appreciate some other experienced editors' input. I based the article on the notability guideline "Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent of the musician or ensemble itself." The published works in question are this article in Rolling Stone, this article in the Atlantic, this article (along with others) in Ones To Watch (which is an established & reliable newsblog), and this article (along with others I didn't include, since I thought I had established notability) by The Fader. Since the rule of thumb I've seen is three published works, I thought this was more than enough - thoughts?
    I have other questions about how to improve this article, but I want to make sure it's notable enough in the first place before I waste anyone's time with all that. Thanks so much to anyone who can help! Remainsuncertain (talk) 03:27, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Remainsuncertain On "On April 21, 2023, via social media, a new underscores era was launched, featuring lore about a fictional Michigan town called Wallsocket,[11]" No, if the subject is the only source for this, it's not interesting to include (from the WP-POV). Also the language "a new underscores era was launched" is not how "we" do it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:12, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Got it! I included that information because a lot of notable sources talked about said era (and associated lore), but none of them mentioned the starting point. The weird passive voice (or whatever the grammatical term is) is because I wasn't sure about how to differentiate the artist herself from the project ("Underscores launched a new era" vs "Grey launched a new underscores era" etc.). I'll take another look at what the sources say and see if I can switch things around! Remainsuncertain (talk) 19:09, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Looking through the article quickly; there are a couple things I'm noticing.
    1. You may want to clarify this person's name and pronouns. I'm noticing that Underscores is the stage name, but the article uses April Harper Grey as the given name and female pronouns, whereas a lot of the sources use a different given name (is one of them a dead name? If so it looks like the person has gone by both publically and so per MOS:DEADNAME both should probably be noted) and they/them pronouns. I also note that in the infobox there is an unsourced also known as of MILKFISH, which I assume is another stage name they have performed under. There should be something in a "Personal life" section to clarify the discrepancies.
    2. Proper names should be capitalized. That includes stage names like Underscores, and song and album titles. I note that you have consistently used lowercase, and that does seem to be how the artist prefers things, but take a look at this section of the manual of style.
    3. There are 2 purposes of citations on Wikipedia
      1. clarifying where information comes from
      2. demonstrating notability
    I think you understand the difference, but when you are submitting an article to AFC you need to make it very clear that there are sources that support notability, and a great way to do that is to write the article using only those sources and then flesh out the details with additional sources (like the about self ones you mention above) later.
    I defiantly think the Atlantic article and the Rolling Stone article are pointers of notability. Perhaps Timtrent wouldn't mind coming here and clarifying their concerns with the article? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:08, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks so much!!
    Yep, the points you made in #1 are some of my main "other questions about how to improve this article:"
    - My initial draft included clarifying info about her name, which she posted a statement about via social media, but another editor removed it with the comment "What say wrote about herself on social media does not contribute to notability and does not warrant a quote."
    - Regarding pronouns, no sources formally note her pronouns (although the most recent ones do use she/her) and she has never made an official statement - I got the current information from her social media bio, but I have no idea how to cite that or if it's appropriate to do so at all.
    - Thanks for linking the info about deadnames and capitalization - I dug around for those for a while, to no avail, lol.
    - Regarding deadnaming: would you say she was notable under the other name? Only two sources mention it, one being a passing mention in the middle of the article (nothing in the lede). Most just refer to her as "underscores." But I'm not sure if that's what the MoS means by "notable under that name."
    - The MILKFISH mention is an error on my part - I decided to remove the source for it (in "other work"), since it wasn't the strongest. Forgot it was in the infobox as well.
    Thanks for the tip in #3. That makes a lot of sense as to why it was declined for notability in the first place! Remainsuncertain (talk) 19:39, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    page of a pdf
    sometimes a reliable source is in a pdf doc which is a numerical doc of an original paper doc with missing pages. For example, in the pdf, the info is at the page 30 but on that page, it is written that it is the page 42 of the original paper doc. In the ref using the template cite web or cite book, for the property page, should I indicate the page 30 or 42 ? Yunan973 (talk) 13:23, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Yunan973 You should use the correctly numbered text page in the original document 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 13:32, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Note also the tip at WP:PAGELINKS. In providing readers the URL for a .pdf, you can append #page=30 so that for most people the .pdf will open at the correct place: page 42 of the original document in your example, with the parameter |page=42 also included, as already suggested above. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:09, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Ok. Another question = when the pdf is not readable in the web browser but is on a web page where we can download it (example here: https://ins-congo.cg/download/annuaire-statistique-du-congo-2010/), is it ok to use the property "format=pdf" of the template cite web ? Yunan973 (talk) 14:59, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    The documentation at {{cite web}} suggests that the parameter |format=pdf should only be used where the target URL is actually a .pdf but, for some reason has a different file extension set by the owner of the file. That would not be the case in your example: the only way to download the .pdf is to navigate to the webpage and then click on the "Télécharger" button: there is no direct URL that works.     List of islands of Cambodia: ISLAND STUDY & Wikipedia Revision history
    I have been studying the Islands of Cambodia using about five different MAP sources, and many Internet Web Pages to study the islands. My goal is initially to study the history of the islands, and then to combine them into my World-Earth database of islands (Which has become a unbelievable task once I began studying Cambodia.) I realize that the WET seasons dramatically affects the inland islands of Cambodia, submerging lands that may reappear in the DRY season (and possibly in shifted locations depending on the Soil Erosion and water level). My current focus is on Ocean-Sea-Gulf Coastal Islands specifically the Gulf of Thailand. In studying all the sources the entry for "Koh Traolach, Melon Island, ត្រឡាច" which appears in ALL revisions of the Wikipedia "List of islands of Cambodia" located on Web Internet page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_islands_of_Cambodia does not appear as a Coastal Island but possibly a "Inland Island" and has been impossible to find (anywhere). There is a Inland district with a similar name "Kampong Tralach ឃុំ កំពង់ត្រឡាច" where a Khmer prison (converted high school) was but I can't be certain the original Wikipedia name ENTRY wasn't an alternate name for a coastal island. I also understand there are numerous names, alternate names, and spellings for each island and searched for that possibility but have not found anything even remotely reasonable to explain the entry in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_islands_of_Cambodia. Could you clarify and maybe provide coordinates? 2600:4040:B0EB:A800:ADE3:6BDB:7401:615F (talk) 15:03, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi IP editor.
    Koh Traolach was added to the Wikipedia page at 06:16 on 1 December 2010 by an Editor who has not contributed since 2011. Unfortunately it is not sourced. I suggest that if you can't find any reference to this island anywhere else then it fails the Wikipedia:Verifiability policy, and you can simply remove it from the article.
    On that note, if you have reliable sources for all the other unsourced islands on that list (there are a lot!), feel free to add them yourself. Qcne (talk) 15:52, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    What are the rules for creating business articles
    We want to create a post for our company in the same way that Facebook did.     You are confused. Facebook did not create, and does not own, the article about it. It was written by independent editors wholly unconnected with Facebook.     When you know a document will change. archive-url?
    I've got an article where information is referenced to the "pledge manual" (not called that) (a PDF file) for the group that is re-issued every year *and* is placed at the same URL. So within a week or so, the 2022-2023 pledge manual will be replaced by the 2023-2024 pledge manual. I'm not too concerned that the information that I'm referencing will disappear, mostly that the pages and sections may be renumbered. This pledge manual *is* on archive.org (and has been grabbed at *least* yearly since 2016). So I'd love to make the reference to a specific year, and I could use archive-url in cite web, but it doesn't feel right to mark it dead. Advice?Naraht (talk) 15:13, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    User:Naraht if there's a specific version that you'd like to be the source in perpetuity and not change on a yearly basis, you can point the |url= parameter directly at the archived version and lose the |archive-url=, |archive-date=, and |url-status= parameters. I'm not sure if this is exactly best practice, but it will accomplish what you're trying to do. Folly Mox (talk) 19:48, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Skyemom43, while the decline review is canned, it still applies. Each of your references is a non-independent source; a source needs to be independent, reliable, and in-depth to contribute to notability. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 20:35, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    I would like to add that you are not contacting the 'Wikipedia' support line. You are posting a comment on a public forum, on a page used by Wikipedia editors for asking and answering questions. Wikipedia is not some collective entity, it is a collection of volunteers who collaborate to write an encyclopedia. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 20:37, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello, Skyemom. I'm afraid that, like many new editors, you have assumed that because you know how to write academic papers, you know how to write a Wikipedia article. But it is quite a different process.
    I always advise new editors to spend a few weeks or months making small improvements to existing articles, and thereby learning how Wikipedia works, before even trying to write a new article; and in your present situation, that would still be my advice: put Crawford aside for a while, while you learn how things work here.
    Then find places where Crawford or his work have been written about by people completely unconnected with him, (and published in reliable sources). If you can't find any, you'll know that he does not at present meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and there is no point in spending any more time trying to create an article about him.
    If you can find such sources, then you can write an article. Forget everything you know about him, and write a summary of what the sources you have found say about him.
    This is all summed up in your first article, which I urge you to read.
    I also need to ask: are you associated with Crawford? If you are, then you have a conflict of interest. This does not prevent you making an article about him, but it makes it harder for you, because it is likely to be harder for you to write in a sufficiently neutral manner.     My page on wikipedia
    Kind regards, Yogendra Mishrayk (talk) 21:26, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    I'm afraid that you have a misunderstanding. If you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then somebody may choose to write an article about you. Such an article will not belong to you, will not necessarily say you would like it to say, and should be based almost entirely on what people wholly unconnected with you have published about you, not on what you or your associates say or want to say. As far as Wikipedia is concerned, an article about you is not in any way for your benefit (or your detriment) - any benefit you obtain will be incidental (see an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing).
    All Wikipedia editors are volunteers, who work on what they choose to work on. If you want somebody to write an article about you, you will need to get somebody interested enough to do so. You can post a request at requested articles - but in honesty the take-up there is very small. You can improve the attractiveness of your request by doing some of the legwork first: finding some independent reliable sources about yourself.
    Basically, people who try to get articles about themselves on Wikipedia usually have a difficult and frustrating time, however they do it - that is not what Wikipedia is for.
    If you decide to try and write an article about yourself, (which is strongly discouraged, but not forbidden), then please start by reading AUTOBIOGRAPHY and then your first article.
    Above all, do not think of paying somebody to do this: many of the people offering this services are scammers. Some may be honest: if they are, they will tell you up front that they cannot guarantee that an article about you will be accepted, or that if it is accepted, you will be happy with it, or that if you are happy with it to start with, it will stay that way. If any article exists about you, almost anybody in the world may edit it (in accordance with Wikipedia's policies) - except you and your associates, who are limited to requesting changes.
    All this is probably not what you wanted to hear: this is because, like many people, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is, and think it is a place to tell the world about yourself. It is not, and promotion of all kinds is strictly forbidden. ColinFine (talk) 21:49, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Wikipedia isn't a place for you to promote yourself, sorry. 331dot (talk) 21:50, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Skyemom43, you have already created Draft:Michael Herman Crawford, submitted it, and had it declined. That is the proper process, there is no special place for academics. I highly recommend you spend some time reading Help:Your first article and the replies to your post above. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 22:47, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Skyemom43, Draft:Michael Herman Crawford doesn't even look like an article. An experienced editor might have to spend half an hour making it look like one. No self-respecting reviewer would accept something looking like that, without also reformatting it. So effectively you're expecting some reviewer to judge that this meets Wikipedia criteria and also to devote half an hour or more of their day to the chore of reformatting it. A tall order indeed. -- Hoary (talk) 01:18, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Skyemom43: I reccommend that you look at several of our articles about professors to see how they are usually formatted. When you find one whose format appeals to you, look at its wikisource to see how it is put together, and use that as a worked example. -Arch dude (talk) 01:57, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    You can take a look at an article that I created, J. Frederick Grassle, for an example if you like; go to the "edit" mode (but do not edit, unless of course you have something to add) to see the "behind the scenes" formatting that makes it display like a "proper" Wikipedia article. Note, this article was "accepted" without a problem because it provided at least 3 independent sources that established the subject's notability to Wikipedia standards, as well as being written in acceptable Wikipedia "encyclopedic" style (for which there is something of a learning curve, admittedly, but you can start by "copying" the formatting and presentation style of other articles as suggested above). Note that a few key cited publications written by the subject will normally suffice, to indicate the field/s they are known for - not a full list - an external link to e.g. Google Scholar or similar will supply this. Statements regarding key events in the subject's life and career will need references to external sources that confirm this information. Above all, again as stated by others above, if you do not make a valid attempt to present your draft in a format Wikipedia expects, it will not be acceptable to any reviewer. Hope this helps. Tony 1212 (talk) 03:43, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Just to be clear - evidence of notability is not in his own works, but in statements by others as to his notability and/or that his works have been recognised for their usefulness/influence in his field. You should use Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Criteria as your guide to what would be required to satisfy relevant notability criteria in this regard.     No, Ab.Haris999, you've got the wrong idea. The right idea is: You start with reliable sources, and work from these. Incidentally, saying three times in one paragraph (above) that somebody is notable smacks of desperation. (All you need do instead is say that, taken together, [reliable source 1], [reliable source 2] and [reliable source 3] show that he meets WP:GNG.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:11, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    New York Times Paywall Help!!!
    I’m working on improving the David Lewis Gifford article and I’ve stumbled upon a source that could be really useful. As it appears to detail one of Giffords numerous action hero-like adventures. What I know of the disaster is fairly rudimentary. He was on a ship - Daniel Webster - that was crushed by ice five miles south of the northernmost point of the United States. In Alaska. The trail runs cold, until we discover he was picked up by an Australian ship. Though I haven’t added that bit on Wiki. This article from the New York Times appears to fill in the blanks. From what I can see it might indicate how he was rescued, and would make a really intriguing point. I was wondering if anybody here would be able to ‘gift’ me the article so I can read. After bumping into the Times’ paywall I became very frustrated, but seeing that there was a way for me to read it without shelling out I was suddenly reinvigorated. I would be extremely, extremely grateful if anyone were to help me out here. It would mean so much to me and would truly help build the encyclopedia and life story of an incredible man.     In the future, @AdmiralAckbar1977:, if you do run into the same problem with a paywall, WP:RX is designed exactly for this sort of thing. You let people know what article you need access to, and someone with a subscription can look it up for you, and even email you a copy to peruse on your own. --Jayron32 14:36, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    How to edit the original named reference
    I am finally facing the question of how I choose to cite references in a new or substantially expanded article. I like the concept of named references because it simplifies the edit coding. The disadvantage is that the reader has to scroll down to see the details. So my inclination is to use named references only for sources which are used frequently. But the biggest catch to named references seems to be that it is difficult to find that original reference if it must be changed. Is there a trick for locating the original naming of a reference? Humphrey Tribble (talk) 03:05, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Humphrey Tribble assuming you are using the source editor, try using Ctrl+F then look for <ref name="foo">. most of your recent edits are tagged mobile web, in which case your browser likely has a 'Find in page' feature which you can use instead of Ctrl+F. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 03:11, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you, Sungodtemple (talk · contribs), your example helped me solve my immediate problem. However, I had to edit and search several sections. That would be laborious for many articles.
    Ideally, I’d like a cross reference between the names and the references. Perhaps the name which is given to a reference could be stored as an editor’s comment with that reference. But I don’t know how that would work in practice. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 04:21, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    It sounds as though you are groping towards/trying to reinvent short form referencing. See Template:Sfn for the full details, but put simply it separates the citations from the references. In the text you have a short form reference that looks like {{sfn|Tribble|2023|p=4}}. At the foot of the article you have the citations neatly arranged (typically in alphabetical order). If you hover over the reference number in the text, then the reference will appear as a tooltip, if you then hover over the tool tip the full citation will appear as another tooltip, thereby not requiring you to search for it. See Frindsbury for one example. Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 07:00, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    User:Humphrey Tribble, for finding named references added by others, if you tap the "three dots" menu in the upper right of the article, there is a new option "edit full article", which will allow you to search for the reference name without having to check each section individually.     ECAL (disambiguation)
    The disambiguation page for ECAL lists five items, of which: three are redlinks for inexistent articles; one is a link to Eastern California based on an acronym that is nowhere to be found in the article itself (nor is this usage easily found elsewhere); the final link is to the École cantonale d'art de Lausanne, a Swiss university that is commonly referred to as ECAL (or ÉCAL in the French speaking part of Switzerland). This disambiguation page seems to serve little purpose. Should it be deleted? -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 04:16, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Company page
    Hi I want to create a company page and then pages on the team - any place that has a description how to create more them one page/article? thanks. AndyCytrycki (talk) 10:11, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @andycytrycki: absolutely not. wikipedia is not a place to promote your company. ltbdl (talk) 10:12, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    its not about promoting - its about a description on the company - there is a lot of pages on companies and biographies of people working in them. AndyCytrycki (talk) 10:15, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @andycytrycki: well, are you connected to the company in any way? you must declare this. see here for how. ltbdl (talk) 10:17, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @AndyCytrycki: You created a whole page of such text as " The excellent results are delivered by leveraging the deep reservoir of knowledge, relationships and skillset of our team focused on unlocking strategic opportunities and creation of exceptional returns for our investors", and you are asking us to believe that it was not intended as promotion? Really? It was blatant and unambiguous marketing copy from start to finish. Nobody in the world writes like that except marketing professionals employed to promote something. JBW (talk) 10:24, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    there is no problem for me to rephrase the descriptions - I was asked to create the page. If there is a page that will describe that's applicable then I will stick only to that. I will retrain myself from any lines like that. The question is whether I make the effort to write a lot on the company and it would be deleted.
    This is why I'm asking for help. AndyCytrycki (talk) 10:33, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    User:AndyCytrycki, the brief essay Wikipedia:When your boss tells you to edit Wikipedia might be an informative read for you. Folly Mox (talk) 12:48, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello, Andy. If your comnpany has been written about enough by people wholly unconnected with it, published in reliable sources, then there could be a Wikipedia article about it, based entirely on what those independent people say about it, not on what you or our associates say or want to say. You are not forbidden from creating the article itself, but it is discouraged. Such an article will not belong to you or to your company, will not be controlled by you, will not necessarily say what you want it to say. Is that really what you want the world to see? (See An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing).
    The same applies to articles about your colleagues- only if they indvidiually meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability are articles possible. ColinFine (talk) 10:35, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Ok so there is a page about one of the team members - and its out of date - I was asked to update it. And I Will.
    So in other words - independent people would have to create a page on the company and people? AndyCytrycki (talk) 10:42, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi @AndyCytrycki. You can't just go and update it without declaring both your Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and making a Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. Not disclosing this by not following the instructions on those two links is a breach of the Wikimedia Terms and Conditions and can lead to your account being restricted. These declarations must be the next thing you do. Do not make any more edits to any articles related to your company until you've done that.
    If you're having trouble with the declaration process, let us know and we can walk you through it. Qcne (talk) 10:48, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Once you have made these declarations, it is permissible for you to draft an article on your company or its members. The guidance is at WP:COIEDIT. You will be expected to put in the effort to learn how to make such a draft meet Wikipedia's expectations: see H:YFA. You may wish to read WP:BACKWARD to help you avoid the most obvious mistakes.     Thank you very much for this information - this makes it way more understandable how it works. And now I know my next steps. Very helpful. AndyCytrycki (talk) 10:56, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Capitalize title
    How do I capitalize the title of the article würzburg Baskets The first "W" should be upper case BiggySmoov (talk) 10:29, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    I've removed the Template:Lowercase title code from the article- you may need to purge the article cache to see the update. Qcne (talk) 10:39, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    When you inserted content after blanking the page, the content you inserted included the template {{lowercase title}}. I have no idea why, but you can remove it.
    Incidentally, I'm not sure where you copied that material from, but if it was from within Wikipedia (as i assume it was ) you breached the licence by not attributing where it was copied from. You could have done this in the edit summary, or you could (and still can) do so on the article's talk page. ColinFine (talk) 10:41, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Vasu Vijayaraghavan Although Wikipedia has an article about the novel Inca Gold, which you would be welcome to translate into another-language version (see WP:TRANSLATEUS for some advice), we can't help with any translation of the whole book, which presumably would be a large task for you and only worthwhile if your version was going to be commercially published.
