edit: place names ending is 'up' refer to a body of freshwater. Karnup has been recorded as meaning "Place where elders dwell" or "Place where spirits rest" The name is similar to adjoining areas of 'Cardup' and 'Karnet' and it has been purported that all three are actually the same area but has been recorded differently by successive surveys. Karnup now is most probably in an area that Whadjuk Aboriginals would not identify as Karnup. The defining natural formation of the area is 'Stakehill' (unknown Whadjuk name) which is a high geological formation. The locality named after this formation, is far removed from it though suggesting Karnup is mis-ascribed. It is most likely that cardup brook and the locality of Cardup is the actual location of pre-settlement Karnup.
The area of Karnup was an solider settlement area and circa 1924 the Ships 'Balranald', the 'Diogenes' and the 'Jervis Bay' brought settlers to the area. Settlers were originally granted 5 acres of land to clear and farm. The majority either gave back their allotment or sold it as the soil quality is poor in most places. Local Jarrah wood was felled and shipped out of the port of Rockingham. When this wood was all cleared, the area was then used for dairy farming. After this ceased, the land began to naturally re-vegetate and was then portioned into special rural housing lots of 5 acres or more. Some area which had adequate soil was converted into market gardens.
By 2035, Karnup is expected to be a mixed medium density urban area and 2.5 acre bush blocks. (forgive my inexpert editing), content by David Bass, resident of Karnup
