Dubious

I've added the Dubious template to the claim that Taft (and therefore his family) was descended from the Earls of Uxbridge. The reason is that this man, the first Earl of Uxbridge, wasn't born till twenty-odd years after our man, thus descent of the latter from the former is unlikely, to say the very least! Cheers, LindsayHi 05:53, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see someone removed the dubious tag without actually putting in any citations. Since, as was pointed out, the first Earl of Uxbridge was born after the Tafts were already resident in New England, it is chronologically impossible for the claim to be true. There are no sources supporting this anywhere online, in Google books etc; one book, "One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families" by John Osborne Austin (1893) merely states, of the place Uxbridge associated with the Tafts, in a footnote pertaining to a section on Robert Taft Sr's son Robert: "He was chosen first Selectman of Uxbridge. The town was incorporated this year (1727, 6, 27), being named in honor of Henry Paget, Earl of Uxbridge."- see p. 232: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=-s6jO4ZSSaIC&pg=PA232&lpg=PA232&dq=Taft+family+Earl+Uxbridge&source=bl&ots=cnKpF_OXW0&sig=ACfU3U1lvATJ6fHH5-N7nos1B1khGXZ8MA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiT15LY-7nqAhW0sHEKHezxDJkQ6AEwA3oECAoQAQ#v=onepage&q=Earl&f=false — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.144.69.56 (talk) 01:21, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sources?

I am not finding sources for:

It is really hard to sort out whether Taft came from England, Ireland, or Scotland (see the notes in the article). To have a specific place, the source or sources would have documentation of his place of birth - and documentation that ties that birth to this colonist, both being reliable sources.–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:50, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
