Alberto Luigi Sangiovanni-Vincentelli (born June 23, 1947)[1] is an Italian-American computer scientist.[2]
Since 1976 he has been a professor affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley.[3]
While working at UC Berkeley in the 1980s,[4] he co-founded Cadence Design Systems, an EDA company he co-founded, in 1988.
He has also consulted on systems design and EDA for companies such as Intel, BMW, and Sony,[4] and currently sits on the board of Cadence Design.[2]
Early life and education
Alberto Luigi Sangiovanni-Vincentelli was born on June 23, 1947[1] in Milan, Italy.[3][4]
He received his Master of Science degree in engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1971,[3] with a specialty in electrical engineering and computer science (EECS).[4]
Career
After graduating in 1971 from the Polytechnic University of Milan, Sangiovanni Vincentelli stayed on at the university in a research post.[4]
In 1976, he moved to University of California at Berkeley, where he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.[3] and serves as a full professor.
At Berkeley, he "quickly turned his attention to the more theoretical end of electronics," designing numerical analysis algorithms for circuit design.[4]
In 1983,[4] he co-founded Solomon Design Automation (SDA), an electronic design automation (EDA) company.[2] He also co-founded Cadence Design. However, by 1991 they had increasingly started competing.[4]
He also consulted for companies such as Daimler-Chrysler, Fujitsu, Kawasaki Steel and Sony.[4] He has served on governing bodies of science and technology institutions in the United States, Europe, Italy, and Singapore.[4] He was also involved in the Artemis Joint Technology Initiative in the European Union.[4]
By 2023 he was serving on the boards of Cadence and KPIT Technologies, as well as UltraSoC and Value Partners.[4]
He holds the position of Edgar L. and Harold H. Buttner Chair in Berkeley's electrical engineering and computer sciences department,[3][4] and since July 2019, he has served as special advisor on entrepreneurship to the Dean of Engineering at Berkeley. Also since 2019, he has served as chair of the academic advisors of the Berkeley SkyDeck accelerator.[5] He has also held a number of visiting teaching positions at Italian universities.[4]
For 2022 he was awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the category "Information and Communication Technologies".[4]
Research
He has authored multiple papers and books.[4] His best-known research is in the area of electronic design automation.[4][6]
Personal life
As of 2022, he continues to reside and teach in Berkeley.[7]
