Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati

Jagadguru Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati

Swami Avimukteshwarand Saraswati (born 1969) is the 55th and current Jagadguru Shankaracharya of the Jyotirmath of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, India. He was the disciple of Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati and, after his death in September 2022, Swami Avimukteshwaranand was crowned as Shankaracharya of Joytirmath, and he occupied the asharam built by Adi Guru Shankracharya in Joytirmath.[1][2]

Life

Shri Swami Avimukteshwaranad Saraswati was born in Brahmanpur, a village in the Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. His childhood name was Umashankar Pandey, son of Pandit Ramsumer Pandey. He studied up to class 6 in village, and subsequently his family members sent him out for further studies. His father took him to Gujarat, where he met Ramchaitanya of Kashi. Pandit Ramsumer left his son there. Umashankar began worshiping and studying.[citation needed]

[3]

When Swami Karpatri ji Maharaj was unwell, he came to Kashi with Ram Chaitanya, where he served Swami Karpatri ji till his last breath. While engaged in the service of Swami Karpatri Ji Maharaj, he got the darshan and company of Puri Peethadhishwar Swami Niranjan Dev Teerth and Sharda Dwarka Peethadhishwar Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. He took Diksha from Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati and became his disciple, taking on the name Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati.[4]

Education [5]

While in Baroda, he met the tlhen Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati who brought him to Kashi to study Sanskrit.

During his student years in Varanasi, Avimukteshwaranandah also got the privilege to serve Swami Karpatri Ji Maharaj in his last years.

Avimukteshwaranandah studied at Bajoria Sanskrit College and then completed his studies from Navya Grammar to Acharya at Sampoornanand Sanskrit University.

Avimukteshwaranandah was the Vice President of the Student Union during his college year.[6][7]

Ganga Andolan [2]

The struggle to make Ganga pure has been going on for decades. Under the guidance of Shankaracharya Swaroopanand, Swamishree Avimukteshwarandah too joined this movement and held the biggest protest which concluded in the Congress government declaring Ganga as the national river in 2008.

Mandir Bachao Kashi [3]

In 2018, several ancient temples in Varanasi were demolished to accomodate the Kashi Corridor.

Swamishree Avimukteshwaranandah held meetings with the locals and did a padyatra throughout the city to try and save the culture and legacy of Kashi.

Ram Mandir [4]

Swamishree Avimukteshwaranandah was the key witness for the prosecution during the Ram temple custody battle in the courts.

Avimukteshwaranandah's well researched testimony provided the court with ample evidence of the fact that the Babri masjid was infact the exact place where Lord Ram was born.[8][9] [5]

Gaumata Rashtramata [6]

The biggest protest to ban cow slaughter in this country was organised by Karpatri Ji Maharaj in 1966, which ended when the government opened fire on sadhus at the parliament building in Delhi.

Now, the current Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath, Swamishree Avimukteshwarandah has alongwith the presiding other 3 Shankaracharyas brought this demand to the forefront and is running a constant campaign to unite people to demand the government to ban cow slaughter in India.
