Normal Station is the area around University Of Memphis, formerly Memphis State University, and originally called West Tennessee State Normal School.

Earlier in the twentieth century, there was a train station for the Southern Railroad near what is now the intersection of Highland Street and Southern Avenue. Normal Station did not exist in 1956, the year my mother put me on a train at Buntyn Station to go to Corinth, MS to visit my grandmother. I'll do some more research and eventually have the exact location and timeline of the train station.

As was common in the outlying areas around Memphis, neighborhoods and small towns got their names from land owners, landmarks and railway stations (there is Buntyn Station, White Station, Bray Station among many others.)
