James Russell Patton(born September 29, 1933 in Greenville, Mississippi) was a National Football Conference defensive back in the NFL for the New York Giants. He was a 5 time Pro Bowler. Patton attended the University of Mississippi.

Patton was killed in an automobile accident on December 22, 1973. He was the only passenger in the car, and no other vehicles were involved. The accident happened near Villa Rica, Georgia. He was driving to Washington DC to see his sister, Thelma DeWebber, who was dying of cancer.[citation needed]
