Juan Perez is an American politician and lawyer. He is Mayor of the City of Sheboygan. Perez is the first hispanic mayor in Wisconsin. Perez was elected to office in April, 2005 and his term ends April, 2009. He plans to seek a second four-year term as mayor in 2009.

Education

Mayor Perez has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Laredo State University with a major in English and a minor in political science. He also has a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Before becoming mayor, Perez worked at the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan as an Academic Advisor and Coordinator of Pre-College Programs.

Career

Mayor Perez also served as an Alderman of the 2nd District for several years. He served as Vice-President of the Common Council, as a member of many committees. Additionally, Perez served as past President and Vice-President of the Friends of Senior Center Board of Directors, Mead Public Library Board of Directors, President and Vice-President of the Hispanic Advancement Council, President and Vice-President of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Sheboygan. Finally, Perez served as Vice-President and President of the Sheboygan Area School District Board of Education.

Recall effort

Perez was the subject of a recall which failed. Citizens for Responsible Government-Sheboygan (CRG) launched the recall effort July 7, 2006, stating that Perez was "failing to uphold his mayoral duties in office with integrity and professionalism," a claim that was loosely based on the most appropriate location for a new police station. The group had collected 4,013 signatures by September 5, 2006. The recall effort failed that day. Since the recall effort, most of the city population has not been at odds with him.
